After our fantastic date, Joe and I headed back to the hotel, happy, but tired. It had been a pretty good day for us. When we were in the car, I turned on my phone, which had been on the front seat, turned off all day, and I found that I had thirteen missed calls from both Kevin and Crystal. It was odd, usually they would only call once…but thirteen times, something was wrong. I quickly dialed in Crystal’s number, and waited eagerly for an answer.
“Tricia! Thank god you called! Why haven’t you answered your phone?”
“I’ve been with J–” I started to say, smiling over at Joe. He grinned back, and took my free hand in his.
“You know, never mind. I just need you to come to the hospital. Like now.” She said, cutting across me.
“Why? What’s going on?” I asked, I was starting to get nervous.
“Ellie’s in surgery right now.”
“Why? What happened?”
“We’ll explain when you get here. Just get here fast.”
“Okay.” I hung up, and let out a deep breath before turning to Joe.
“What’s wrong?” he asked me.
“We have to go to the hospital…Ellie’s in surgery for something right now…they didn’t say what. But we have to go there.”
“Okay.”
I sprinted up the stairs to the third floor deciding that the elevator would take too long, and Joe was on my heels. All I could hear was the echoes of the aluminum stairs ringing off the walls around me. I couldn’t believe that one of my best friends was in surgery right now, and I hadn’t even had my freaking phone to know sooner.
I was a terrible friend.
When we reached the third floor, Nick stood up from his seat, and walked over to me and Joe. I could see that he had been crying, so I pulled him into my arms tightly.
“She – she might not make it.” He said, shaking. His voice cracked, and I held him tighter.
“Apparently, she got cut up pretty bad.” Kevin said. “One of the pieces of glass cut her vein, and she almost bled to death.”
“They won’t even let me see her.” Nick said. He was definitely crying now, I could feel his tears soaking through my shirt. Some of them dripped down onto my shoulder, and he continued to shake.
“It’s going to be okay.” I whispered into his ear, “She’s a strong girl. She’ll be okay.”
A little bit longer, and she’ll be fine.
Joe walked to my left side, and wrapped his arms around us tightly. Then Crystal walked over to my right and wrapped her arms around us, then Kevin walked over, and completed the group hug, and we stood there for a long time.
“Nick Jonas?” a voice said.
