Chapter 2
"One meets his fate often on the road he takes to avoid it." - French Proverb
Emily looked at me then up at the TV. "Nat-" Her voice was full of warning and worry. "Nat, don't you think-"
I shushed her as I watched the camera zoom out and Oprah came onto the screen, hugging each of the three, dark haired boys as chairs were being brought across the screen. The crowd packed with girls would not stop screaming, no matter how long Oprah sat and waited.
"That song was unbelievable!" Oprah complemented the boys as they settled down into the chairs, "So tell me, how does it feel to be every girl's dream, I mean, look at all these screaming girls. They won't shut up! Look at her, she's crying! You made her cry!" Oprah pointed to a girl in the audience and the her face came up on the screen.
"Yeah, to tell you the truth it's all surreal." Joe jumped in, sitting back, brushing his hair out of his eyes. "I mean, we're just normal guys. We don't really think we're anything worth crying over, but we love the support and loyalty we recieve from our fans. It means a lot."
"So, that song you guys just sung, Dream Angel, I am told there is a story behind it. What was you're inspiration for that song?"
The three boys looked from one to another. "Nick actually wrote the song." Joe jumped in, shaking his brother's shoulder half teasingly, half lovingly.
"Did you? Well, then, what was you're specific inspiration for that song? Is it about anyone special?"
"Well, you know," Nick's smooth, soft voice was calm and steady and my heart did a flip-flop. "It's just a song about love at first sight, really. You know, when you meet someone and something special happens, and you can't get that person out of your head, even if you don't see them right away afterwards. It's something I think a lot of people can relate too."
"Is there a special girl, Nick?"
Nick laughed his face growing red, and Kevin and Joe turned away. "Yeah, I guess you could say there's a girl."
"Could you tell us who?" Oprah was relentless. My heart began to hurt.
"Well, we just really good friends now, and we'll wait to see where it goes. Who knows?"
"Is Dream Angel about this girl?"
"No, no it's not about her-" Nick stopped, and let out an uncomfortable laugh. "But this girl is someone special, an amazing friend I..." I got up. I could not stand hearing about his new girlfriend. He changed the subject off the song, onto this girl, and I did not--could not listen to it.
"Em, can we go?" I could tell Emily was slightly annoyed, but she didn't hesitate in the least. She picked up her sandwich and drink and we threw away our trash. My voice was shaky and my body began to grow weak.
"Come on, let's go home." She linked arms with me comfortingly.
In the car on the way home neither of us said a word. Emily knew I didn't want to talk about it, and the silence that she gave me was the best thing she could have done for me at that moment. I was lucky to have a friend like her.
When we got back to her house I curled up on her bed, and she sat down next to me.
"Nat," She hesitated as she stroked my hair. "Nat, that song was about you, wasn't it?"
"I don't know." I snapped at her, my voice cynical and bitter. "Sorry."
"How about we watch a movie tonight. My sister rented Tristan and Isolde." She smiled down at me, her model face held that look of giddy excitement. "Tommorrow we'll get my mom to drive us downtown Chicago. I'm talking major shopping trip, here." That was a benefit of having a friend with incredibly rich parents; spontaneous shopping trips to Chicago, when ever we wanted. The strange thing was that if you looked at Emily's family or house you wouldn't guess that they were as rich as they were. Infact, I think they gave a good portion of their income away. They're truly amazing people. I loved her and her family almost as much as I loved my own.
I rolled my eyes. "Do I have a choice?"
Emily laughed. "Nope."
The next day we woke up early and headed off into Chicago with Emily's mom and sister. The sun was shining brightly and the birds were singing. I smiled to myself. This was going to be a good day. Bright warm days make you feel bright and warm. They are so full of life and spirit, its hard to be depressed.
As we walked down the streets, me and Emily hurried ahead, linking arms and ducking into store after store. I found the cutest pair of pink high heeled shoes and halter dress to match, while Emily found an amazingly adorable shirt and coat.
"Thank you, Em, so much. I needed this. I needed to clear my mind for once, you know?" I set down my bags next to our table and took a sip of my frappachino. My eyes floated across the cafe and rested on two guys wearing hats and sungl*CENSORED*. They looked like they were trying to not be recognized. Maybe they are secret agents on a secret mission, I concluded with a smile. Maybe something is going on behind the counter in this cafe that we don't know about. I got up and went to the bathroom while Emily ordered a bagel. It was an old building so to get to the bathroom I had to walk down a sketch looking hallway and stairs, putting my trust completely in the little signs that said 'bathroom' with an arrow. The farther I went the more I wished I had brought Emily with me. It was getting creepy and I was starting to get the shivers.
Hurrying, I ran around a corner and ran smack into someone's chest, causing me to scream. Something plastic fell from his head and hit me in the face and when I looked down I saw it was a pair of sun gl*CENSORED* like the ones the secret agents were wearing. The guy grabbed my arm to keep me from falling. Startled, I looked into his face. When his familiar eyes met mine, my heart stopped beating and jumped into my throat.
See I warned you it was long :/ but i hope you enjoy it!
