your state/region/area stereotype

i was just thinking about the stereotypes that always go around, and how funny and oddly accurate they are sometimes.

i live in northern california, and everyone says that around here we say "hellaa" all the time. which is pretty true, when i think about it. it like has replaced the word 'really'. its pretty out of hand, but its so accepted by now. i personally dont say it, but im so used to it.

and there's supposed to be tons of valley girls all over this state, and idk about that one. i think there's that valley girl type everywhere. but i guess so, they're everywhere around here. especially the school i go to is pretty conformist, if you're not this skinny and wear these clothes and have this much money, you're out. and its pretty sad. i envy schools that are accepting. :/

/end rant. ANYWAYS. :]

what's the stereotype of your state or area, if there is one? or is your school like mine, obnoxiously snobby, or the opposite?

Re: your state/region/area stereotype

Well, I live in eastern WA, and I think the west side has a tendency to think we're all just a bunch of small town, simpleminded, inbred hicks. haha But, we're not! People also think that everyone on the west side are a bunch of Starbucks-drinking tree huggers who worship Death Cab and Nirvana or whatevs. Ah, I love my state. lol

As far as school goes, I don't think my college has a stereotype. Which is good. lol

See? Nothing scandalous. :]

Okay, fine then, Joe.

I will take that banana. Thanks. :]

Re: your state/region/area stereotype

I live in NC, near Charlotte. And everyone must think that we are all country and frankly, we're far from it. Every now and then you hear someone with a prominent southern drawl, but most of us are accent-free. And my school - wow. As long as you look cute and your not sporting some badly dyed hair, your pretty safe. Everyone will always be nitpicky, but usually, my school is pretty chill.

Re: your state/region/area stereotype

I live in Southern California, so I know exactly what you're talking about Heather!

My high school was REALLY bad. But it didn't just end at the clothes you wore, it was like if you didn't own a nice car or your family didn't own a beautiful home you were shunned away. It's kind of sad, hahahaha. I guess I'm used to it because I was born and rasied here, so it's "what I know." I was blessed with a really social personality so I really didn't care who I talked to and what they thought about me, so I made friends with lots of different people.

I also think that California as a state has a "fake" stereotype from people who have never been here before, because of Hollywood and plastic surgery, ect ect ect. It's quite sad but what some people don't realize is that the majority of people who live in California have never gone under the knife, hahaha.

Re: your state/region/area stereotype

haha i live near pittsburgh and everyone thinks we run around saying "yinz" and "slippy" and use "gumbands" and  talk about the steelers football team all day. some people do and all but not everyone!

it's actually really funny! we joke about these accents and the strange slang a lot.

I live in New Jersey. We're said to talk with accents and pronounce the name of our state as "Joisy," but I'll tell you now, that I have been living in Jersey all my life; never have I heard one person say that. We do have accents and we are pretty conceited at times (depends on who you are). We don't smell like disgusting industry. In fact, we're realy green with a lot of trees and plants.
I think it's a great state, but people put it out to be something totally different.
This explains all of it. ;]

Nadia ^^ im from jersey too! idk what part you are from, but i know that most of the time when people think new jersey they thing "Jersey Shore" then they get the typical jersey look in their heads:

overly tanned, full italian pride, guido, guidette, spikey-overly gelled hair, guinne tees, and pumas, techo loving, clubbing, && muscular.

yeah, thats pretty much what you will find down in the jersey shore over the summer, but not everyone is like that. but ALOT of people who live around me are like that/ where i go to the beach

also, people do think we say "New Joisy" uhmm. NO. i dont this anyone in NJ says that, only out of state people, and people think we have this thick, very pronounced, and heavy (almost staten-island like) accents. and i dont think we do, but everyone ellse seems to think we do.

but, i guess overall when you hear New Jersey you think Jersey Shore Italian guidos.

:P and yea we do have tons of trees and lots of greenery. i mean, we are the "Garden State" haha.

(sorry if other New Jersey people feel different, but this is just what i notice in my section of NJ)

Re: your state/region/area stereotype

Yeah, I live in North Jersey, just 10 minutes away from the city. I basically get the same types of sterotypes you do. It sucks that people think that. They'll never know until they actually come here.
