Separated but Never Apart. Annie’s eyes searched the airport. Nothing. Maybe she was too late. Maybe he left without saying goodbye. Maybe it was easier for him. She felt alone and small in the huge airport. She kept on looking. She looked at all the passing people why was she so scared? She knew this day was coming. She felt the tears begin to come to the surface of her eyes. She tried to hold them back but they fell one by one onto the tiled floor and splattered. Just like her dreams. She wiped back the tears and tired looking around some more. She finally spotted someone looking just as hard as her. Her heart leaped. She tried calling his name but she couldn’t. Finally he called hers. “Annie!” He came running towards her. She ran to him. Arms spread wide open. They embraced each other for a long time. He ran his hands down her hair as she buried her head in his chest. The tears socked his shirt. She could feel he rest his head on top of hers. She held on tight never wanting to let go. She could hear him sniff trying to fight the tears. “Three thousand miles isn’t that far.” He tried to tell her. She couldn’t bear it . “It is when your on the other side of it.” Annie said. “I know.” he replied. She looked up with tears in her eyes only to see he had just as many. “I love you.” he said pulling her back into him. “I love you too.” Annie said. He leaned down and kissed her. He tuned his head. He had to go. “Please don’t go.” Annie begged. “I know, I have too just remember we will be separated but we, us,” He motioned back and forth between him and her. “We will never be apart.” Annie’s eyes still had tears in them. “I love you.” She said hugging him one last time. “ I love you too.” He said kissing her on top of her head and then turning to leave. He ran off into the crowds of people. “Bye, Joe.” Annie said to herself as she too got lost in the crowd of people. Forget Me Not He sat on a plane as he flew to a new city. He thought about the last day he would ever spend in a school hallway. He remembered her face smiling as she ran towards him and threw her arms around him. Her words rang in his ears, “I will miss you.” She said. He didn’t say anything back, he was scared. He was leaving everything he knew was a sure thing and stepping out onto thin ice. That was two years ago. Now he wondered if she was ever one of the faces in the thousands he saw every night. What he would do just to see her face one more time. He took out his messenger bag he had in the seat beside him and pulled out a piece of paper that had been folded over and over again. He had put it in his pocket every day and carried it with him. He unfolded it one more time. He watched as a dried flower fell to his lap. A Forget me Not. Then he read the twelve words he had read so many times before. Dear Kevin, I love you. Forget Me Not Please. Love, Annie. He folded it one more time. He never forgot her. Thing was she had moved on. This dream he was living was like every dream. There comes a time when you want to wake up from it. Time We Had He looked at picture of himself and her. She was happy, he was happy. Time was something they weren’t ever worried about. As fat as they could tell they had their whole lives in front of them. Time should never be wasted. Because no one is promised how long you have. Why did hers have to be so short compared to his. He felt a tear trickle down his cheek. Ending’s can be happy and they can be sad, their story was happy why was there ending so sad. Images flashed around in his head. Images of him rushing through the hospital hallways. Sitting beside her bed. Looking up and see the heart monitor in one strait line. He held the picture between his hands. It was like he was holding a whole other life. A life that he could no longer live, because she no longer lived at all. He laid the picture into a shoe box and slid it under his bunk. He heard her say in his head over and over again. We are never promised tomorrow, Nick. That’s just what he didn’t want to face, tomorrow.
