I jiggled my leg up and down nervously as I waited for my mom to come pick me up so I could leave this dreadful place. I looked out the window at all the giant trees lining the place and tried to keep my patience, but I just wanted to get home. Finally I saw my mom pull up into the parking lot and I jumped up, "well Jude, we wish you the best" Tina said, handing me my giant duffle bag and giving me a hug, "thanks Tina, i'll miss you" I said, which was true, I was going to miss Tina, and the few friends I had here, but I was so ready to leave it all behind and just go home. I walked out to the car and my mom grabbed me and gave me a tight hug, "let's get you home sweetie" she said and threw my duffle in the back seat. I climbed into the passenger and slipped my converse off, and put my feet up on the dashboard as I switched the radio on. "your dad is so excited to have you home" my mom told me as she pulled out of the drive way of the clinic. I stared at it as it got smaller and smaller as we drove further away, I was glad to be out of there and glad to leave it all behind, leave what happened behind. mom and I talked for a bit about how she painted and renovated parts of the house, and how my room is exactly the way I left it. I tried to remember the way it was before I got sent away, but it was a while ago so I couldn't really remember.

an hour later we pulled into the drive way and my dad was in the yard cleaning the lawn cuttings. "sweetie!" he called out and came to give me a big bear hug. I dropped my duffle and squeezed him tight, I missed him so much while I was away. Mom came to visit me everyday, but my dad would come only once every two weeks or so, it killed him to see me in there. Incase you couldn't tell, I'm a major daddie's girl, he's one of my best friends, I don't know what i'd do without him, "it's so good to have you home partner" he said looking at me and smiling, "you're hair got long" he said and I laughed, "yeah they don't let you get hair cuts in the clinic" I said and he went quiet. I could tell that what happened was a touchy subject to him, he didn't like to talk about it. "i'm going to unpack...k daddy?" I said and he smiled, "sure...I'm making dinner, your favorite, I hope you're hungrey" he said with a smile, "steak and potatoes!?" I said excitedly and he gave me a wink, I gave him another bear hug and thanked him before making my way up to my room.

I opened my door and saw my room for the first time in two years, it was a bluish purple and my bed was HUGE, or maybe it just seemed huge because I was so used to that single bed. I walked in and dropped my duffle on my bed and looked around, I noticed my desk so I walked over and looked at all the pictures I had pinned to my cork board. I saw a picture of me and my dad when I was 16, and a picture of me and my mom around the same time. I stopped when I saw the next picture, I had blocked those memories out because they were too hard to deal with, but seeing that picture brought all those memories back. I took it off the board and looked at it in my hands, it was me and my best friend, we were both 16 at the time and inseperable. We'd been friends since the 3rd grade when he offered to let me use his crayons because no one else would share, and we had been best friends ever since, or so I thought. I hadn't seen him once in the two years that I was in the clinic, him or his brothers never once came to see me. Tears started to form at the corners of my eyes, and I reached up and put the picture back beside the others. Just than I heard a small knock on my door, "hun...?" my mom said cautiously, I turned around with a smile, "hey mom" I said and she gave me a concerned look, "honey are you ok?" she asked me. I nodded, "yeah...i'm just really glad to be home" I said, half lying half telling the truth, I was glad to be home but that wasn't the cause of my tears right now. "we're so glad to have you back sweetie, we've missed you. You're dad expecially, he almost went nuts without his sidekick" she said smiling at me and I hugged her. "dinner is going to be done in a few minutes, go wash up and come downstairs in five minutes ok sweetie?" she said and I nodded. she went downstairs and I walked over to my bed, sitting down and flopping down so I was lying down and looking at the ceiling. 'you're my best friend, I won't let anything happen to you' his words echoed in my head as I stared at the stucco ceiling, 'promise?' I had asked, 'promise promise' he said, using our secret promise we had since forever. I sighed as a tear ran down my cheek, even after everything that happened I couldn't help but miss him, miss them, my best friends, even if they hadn't come to see me when I needed them the most.

~*~ Chapter 2~*~

I trudged up the stairs and flopped onto the computer chair rubbing my stomach. I hadn't eaten food that good in so long, so naturally I stuffed my face; plus, it was my dad's famous steak and potatoes, my all time favorite. I swiveled to face my computer and I stared at it, trying to remember what I had on it. I turned it on and closed my eyes as I waited for it to load, finally I opened my eyes and looked to see that I had a picture of me and him up as my background. I didn't move for a second, I just sat and stared at the two people in the photo, It was the sixteen year old me with long wavy brown hair, a goofy look on my face, holding on tightly to my bestfriend beside me, the one with the floppy hair, goofy face to match mine, holding onto me just as tightly. I sighed and thought that maybe the computer was a bad idea, 'no Jude you have to do this. face this.' I told myself and signed myself onto msn. I looked to see who was on, but I couldn't even really remember who was who, and the people I did recognize I didn't really want to talk to. I had over 360 emails, I'm surprised that my account hadn't been disabled considering how long it had been inactive and how many emails I had accumulated here. Just than a message popped up at the bottom of my screen, I clicked it and it opened. "hey Mrs. Gomes, how are you? did Jude get the gift I sent her?"  it was Mandy, one of my oldest friends, and she had apparently sent me something while I was gone. "um, Hey Mandy, I got your gift....thanks so much I loved it" I typed, and waited for a responce. "jude? is that you?" she responded a little while later, and I blushed feeling a little bit awkward. "yeah it's me, I'm home now" I said and continued to go through my inbox, but realized that it was all junk and that nothing had relevance to me, so I just clicked the empty button. "oh my goodness, really!?" she responded, which I couldn't help but laugh, "yeah it's really me, how're you?" I asked, clearly trying to avoid any talk of myself. "I'm fine, but I want to know how you are! are you busy right now?" she asked, "no..." I said, not knowing where this was going, "ok. do you want to go for a walk down by the lake or something? I'll come pick you up" she offered, at fist I was going to say no but then I thought about it and really did want to catch up so I decided to go. "sure...you remember where i live?" I asked, "yeah of course, be there in an hour!" she said typed and quickly signed off.

~*~one hour later~*~

Mandy and I met up on the docks by the lake and it was a bittersweet reunion. I hugged her the second I saw her, I missed all my friends while I was gone and was glad to see her again. "Jude, you look really really good" she exclaimed as we hugged. "thanks, so do you M, you've grown up so gorgeous" I said smiling and she hugged me again, "I missed you" she said and my throat tightned a little as I kept my tears at bay. We walked along the docks and went for ice cream, talking about everything that happened in the past two years. we are both nineteen now and she's in college, has a cute boyfriend, and is still friends with a lot of the same people. We found a bench in the park and sat down, "so when did you get home?" she asked me as she stared at the ground and kicked at the rocks, we had been avoiding any discussion of why we hadn't seen each other for so long, and what it was like for me, but it was inevitable. "um, this afternoon actually" I said and looked out at the playground where I used to come with her, and our tight group of friends all the time. "oh wow." she said and there was a small silence, "Jude, I'm really sorry that I didn't come to see you" she blurted out, and I just nodded, "it's ok" I said, normally people would be upset if their friends forgot about them but i was the opposite, I didn't want my friends to see me the way I had been. "no it really isn't. It's just that it was really hard for me," she said, and I noticed that she was tearing up a little, so I patted her hand, "no it's ok, seriously, I totally understand. It was a really awkward situation for everyone, I understand." I told her and she smiled, "thanks. I did come once to see you, but your mom said that the doctor advised that you not see anyone that was involved with...you know." she told me and I nodded, "yeah she told me. i got all your cards and stuff. thanks for not forgetting about me" I said, smiling over at her and she smiled back, "you're my bestfriend, I could never in my life forget you!" she told me and I hugged her. We didn't say anything for a while and we just sat and stared at the sunset, "you haven't talked to them yet have you?" she asked me, and I knew who she meant by them, I cleared my throat, "no...I havent" I said and she let out a sigh. "You should, they miss you" she told me and I rolled my eyes, "uh huh" I said and picked up a rock from under my foot, "I don't know about that" I said, and flicked it across the grass. "Jude, they wanted to come see you, but you know the doctor wouldn't let them" she said and I nodded, "yeah I know that, but it still hurts. They were my best friends, and they couldn't even write to me. They just let me rot in there, without a second thought, how am I supposed to feel about that?" I asked her, and she didn't say anything for a long time. "I can understand why you would think that, but just know, I saw how it affected them and I can promise you, they didn't forget about you, they actually took it really really hard," she told me, "even him right?" I stated sarcastically and she nudged me, "expecially him. he took it the hardest, you don't even know"
