Chapter 4:
Kerry’s POV
“Lily sweetie,” I said, as I walked into the back room where Lily, Kevin, and Sophie were playing, “Do you mind if I borrow Kevin and Sophie for a little bit.”
“Sure Aunt Kerry,” Lily said, smiling at me.
“Thanks sweetie,” I said, holding out my hands for Kevin and Sophie to grab on to. I led the two of them out of the backroom, as Lily ran past us, most likely in search of her parents.
“Where are we going Mommy?” K3 asked, looking up at me.
“You’re daddy and I need to talk to you,” I said, leading them to my and Kevin’s bunk. I pulled back the curtain, and the two of them climbed up into the bunk where their father was waiting.
“Are we in twuble?” Sophie asked, as she crawled onto the bunk.
“No Soph, you’re not in trouble,” Kevin chuckled, as he pulled her onto his lap.
“Ok kids,” I said, as I sat down with my family, “your daddy and I have something to tell you.” K3 and Sophie looked at Kevin and I intently.
“What is it mommy?” Kevin asked.
“Well, Kevin, you like being a big brother right?” I asked him. He nodded his head, looking over to smile at his little sister.
“So, you wouldn’t mind having another little brother or sister, right?”
“No, I think that would be cool,” he said, smiling at me.
“What about you, Soph? How would you feel about being a big sister?”
“Um…” Sophie hesitated. Kevin and I looked at her expectantly, “Would I have to share my toys?”
“Yes sweetie, you would, but Kevin shares his toys with you, and he doesn’t mind it, right Kev?” Kevin asked.
“Nope,” Kevin replied happily.
“Well… I guess I would like to be a big sister,” Sophie said, smiling at us.
“Well, that’s good, because I’m having another baby,” I said, as Kevin grabbed my hand and gave it a squeeze.
There was silence, before both kids let out an excited squeal. Kevin bounced up and down on the bed while still sitting down (luckily he didn’t stand up, because he would have surely bumped his head on the ceiling of the bunk). Sophie was hugging her daddy, and when she let go, she began clapping her hands excitedly.
Kevin and I smiled at our children, glad that news hadn’t caused any tantrums. As happy as I was that our kids were happy about having a new brother or sister, I was definitely not looking forward to the millions of questions Sophie was going to ask when my stomach starts getting bigger. Hopefully, Kevin had asked all of his questions when I was pregnant with Sophie, because I really think I can only deal with one curious kid at a time.
After getting hugs from both Kevin and Sophie, the four of us climbed out of the bunk. Once we were all the way out, Kevin and Sophie went running through the bus.
“Uncle Nick! Aunt Chrystal! Guess what!” Kevin exclaimed, as they reached the front of the bus. Kevin and I reached the front of the bus to find Chrystal helping Jacob eat, as he sat in his highchair, and Nick sitting on the couch with Lily.
“What sweetie?!” Chrystal exclaimed, kneeling down to get on Kevin’s level.
“Mommy’s having a baby!” Kevin exclaimed.
“Aw that’s great! Are you excited Kev?” Chrystal asked.
“Uh huh!” Kevin said, nodding excitedly.
“Congratulations Kerr,” Chrystal said, standing up to give me a hug, as Nick hugged Kevin.
“You don’t seem very surprised, Chrys,” I said, as we pulled apart.
“Well, Nick and I already kind of knew,” she said.
“Huh? How did you know?”
“Well, Nick saw your pregnancy test in the bathroom, so he thought I was the one who was pregnant…” she chuckled. I couldn’t help but laugh as well, as Chrystal and Nick traded places, so that Nick could give me a hug.
“Did you here that Lil,” Chrystal said, as she pulled away from Kevin, “You’re going to have another little cousin.”
“Congadulatey Aunt Kerry!” Lily exclaimed, running over to hug Kerry.
“It’s congratulations, sweetie,” Nick said, ruffling Lily’s hair as she ran back over to him.
“Oh… sorry… congrrraaatuuulatiiioooons,” she said, saying the word slowly, looking to her dad for approval.
“Good job,” Nick smiled, kissing the top of her head.
Chrystal’s POV
Kerry, Kevin, and their kids headed towards the back of the room, as I pulled Jacob out of his highchair. I carried him over to the couch, where I sat down next to Nick and Lily.
“Mommy?” Lily said, as I sat down.
“Yes pumpkin?” I asked, pulling her onto my lap.
“Are you and Daddy trying to make another baby?” she asked, like it was the most normal question for a four year old to be asking her parents.
“What?” I asked, my eyes widening, as I looked over at Nick, who had a similar expression on his face.
“Well… I heard you tell Aunt Kerry that Daddy thought you were pwegnant, and before Jakey was born, you told me that a mommy and daddy have to make a baby.”
“Well, we’re not really trying, sweetie,” I said.
“Then how could you be pwegnant, if you’re not trying to make a baby?”
“Well… remember when I told you that a mommy and daddy make a baby with the love they have for each other?”
“Mmhm.”
“Well, your daddy and I always love each other, so even if we’re not trying to have a baby, sometimes our love can create a baby without us asking for one,” I explained.
“So… I love Jakey… does that mean that I could become pwegnant?”
“No no no!” I exclaimed.
“Huh? But you said-“
“Princess, your mommy and I love each other in a different way then the way you love Jake or anyone else,” Nick said.
“What? How is it different?” she asked.
“It just is, baby,” I said.
“Fine,” she said, letting out a sigh, “Is this another one of those things that I’ll understand when I’m older.”
“Yes sweetie,” I said.
“I can’t wait until I’m older,” she mumbled. Nick and I chuckled, as Lily hopped off of the couch, “Daddy, can I read Jakey a book?”
“Sure princess, here you go,” Nick said, handing Lily a picture book that had been sitting on the arm of the couch. Lily grabbed Jake’s hand, and led him a little bit away from us. She sat down on the floor, and pulled Jake onto her lap.
“That was a close one,” I said giggled quietly. Nick leaned in to kiss me softly, smiling sweetly at me as we pulled apart.
“Sometimes I just can’t believe the kinds of questions she asks,” Nick chuckled.
“Yeah, I know,” I said, scooting closer to him, to cuddle into his side, “So you seemed pretty upset that I wasn’t the one who was pregnant.”
“No, it’s fine Chrys,” Nick said, “I’m not upset.”
“But you would like it if I was pregnant again, wouldn’t you?” I asked.
“Well… yeah, but don’t worry about it sugar, we have enough on our plates,” he said, looking over at Jake and Lily.
“But look at them… they’re such good kids,” I said, watching as Lily “read” to Jacob. Lily couldn’t actually read yet. She could read a little bit, but she certainly couldn’t read an entire book, so she was basically making up a story in her head, and pretending that she was reading. Jake loved it though, so it was really sweet.
“Wait… are you, my wife who used to be so against having kids, thinking about having another one?” Nick asked, smiling at me.
“You know being a mom has grown on me,” I said, smiling at Nick.
“So, you’re really thinking about it?”
“I dunno… it’s a possibility though. Probably not anytime soon, but… maybe someday.” Nick smiled at me, and leaned in to kiss me slowly.
“I love you,” he whispered.
“I love you too snugglemuffin,” I giggled, stretching myself out on the couch, with my head on Nick’s lap, watching our beautiful children.
