Ch. 7
4 days later, my beat up old car, that Rick had sold to me for $200, which was probably more than it was worth, pulled up into the parking lot the student USC parking lot. All around me, parents and kids carted around boxes and furniture, carrying around maps of the school, all probably getting hopelessly lost. My stomach sank. I had to get out of the car, find the admissions office, get my room assignments, and than con some guy into helping me move my stuff all by myself. This wasn't like when we took Rick to college, and Kirsten and I arranged his underwear neatly and his mom scrubbed down the surfaces of every piece of furniture, and his Dad assembled his bed. Or this wasn't like Kirsten had said it had been when she called yesterday, when Rick had showed her all the campus hotspots and Mrs. Thomas hung her posters on the wall and her Dad built shelves for all her books. I unbuckled my seatbelt, and I swear I was going to get out when the phone rang. Saved by the phone.I picked it up from the passenger seat, not even bothering to look at the id. "Hello?" "Are you in LA yet?" Joe. " I just got here. I haven't even got out of my car yet." I could hear him chuckle. "Jude, get out of the car." "But, but, I'm all alone." I whined right into the phone, not even caring about how whiney I must have sounded. "And everyone has parents and sisters and I'm all alone, like a loser," Thank god he cut me off. "Jude, listen, I just got out of a photo shoot, I'm like twenty minutes from USC. Kevin will drop me off." Oh god, I had guilted him with my whining. "No, Joe, really-" "Shut up, Jude, I'll be there in twenty." And than the line went dead.
I sat in my car for the next twenty-five minutes. I didn't want to get out, and than have to fund Joe, so I sat in my seat and stared at the passing people. Finally, a hybrid tahoe pulled up on the other side of the parking lot and Joe jumped out. I hadn't seen him since the picnic in July, and he had gotten even tanner. As he looked around, I realized he didn't know what my car looked like, so I jumped out and walked around to the back of the car. I waved and Joe saw me, picking up his pace, and a grin spreading over his face. I walked forward a little bit and we met each other. I gave him a quick hug and pulled away, looking him in the eyes. "Thanks so much for coming." I smiled, eyes filling with tears. I was an emotional mess, tired from driving until two or three in the morning for the past 4 days, and emotionally unstable from that trauma of having to walk in alone. "What are friends for? He said with a grin. I grinned back at him. "Hey, do you happen to have a hat? I have these-" He grabbed a pair of dark shades from his pocket. "But I don't really want to be chased by fans." I had allready rifled through my trunk and held a yankees hat out. "Sweet." He grinned at me. "Good taste too."He smirked at me as he pulled it over his curls. I stuck my tongue out at him,and started walking towards the housing office, where a long line was forming, making Joe run to catch up. After waiting in line for twenty minutes, we left the office, a piece of paper with my room number on it. "Ok, it looks like it's over here." Joe pointed in one direction, and I followed him. Soon, we were walking through the halls, counting doorways. "112! Found it" Joe called me from the other side of the hallway. After dodging a girl carrying a trashcan and a dad carting a set of drawers, I got over to him. Eagerly, I pushed open the door. A girl with brown hair was sitting on the carpet, sorting through a box. Her mom was attacking a dresser with cleaner, while two identical girls hung posters up on her walls, her Dad putting her bed together. "Hi!" Yes, she said it like that and heroic-like jumped up from her spot on the ground. She was pretty, her brown hair in a ponytail, and tiny brown shorts covering her long legs. "I'm Amanda!" She stuck out her hand and I shook it, managing to smile, still shocked by her umm, perfectness. "I'm Judith." She nodded twice and than smiled, showing off perfectly white teeth. "This is my Dad." Cue Dad, wearing a flannel shirt and work jeans even though it was a million degrees outside and I was sweating like a pig, wave at me. "Mom." The lady put down her cleaning bottle, and hugged me, her frosted blonde hair bobbing around my face. "And than these are my twin sisters, Claire and Grace." They looked about fifteen, and smiled at me. "This is Joe." I felt so glad I had someone to introduce after that long scale introduction. Good 'Ole Joe.
Joe got straight to work, grunting as he made countless trips from my car to my room, carrying dozens of boxes and my bed and dresser. Than he unpacked and made funny remarks, and made small talk with Amanda's dad, while managing to look cuter and cuter everytime. Finally, when Amanda, teary eyed walked her parents back to their car, Joe got up. "I guess I should go." I jumped up from where I'd been sitting on my bed and hugged Joe. "Thank you so much for you help today!" Really. I don' t know what I'd do without him. He grinned, and than a knock on the door interrupted our hugfest. I let go of him and opened the door. "Hi! I'm Vanessa!" Good, god, is everyone enthusaustic in LA?She held out her hand. "I'm your RA!" I shook her hand. She walked farther into the room. "I'm also on the newspaper staff, we're doing an articled on moving day. Do you think I could get a picture of you and your boyfriend?" She held up her camera. Sigh. I looked absolutely horrible, and with my luck, this would be front page. She didn't even wait for an answer. "Oh, we're not, umm." That was Joe, trying to get out that we weren't dating. But Vanessa squished me towards Joe, and sighing, I threw an arm around him. "Oh, you guys are such a cute couple!" CLICK.
