Chapter 3: Nick Jonas.
“That was an awesome concert” said Kathy as she hugged the boys. They laughed in a dismissing way, truly humble.
“Boys, these are Adri” said Cam, as she pointed to my cousin “and Debbie” and pointed at me.
“Hi” we both said shyly. I heard Dave and Jonathan chuckle at our shyness.
“Hey” they replied in unison and shook our hands. That was still weird for my cousin and me, since in Peru we say goodbye and hello with a peck on the cheek.
I looked at the smiling Jonas. They were tall. But then again, I’m 5’0, so almost anyone is tall for me. All of them had very intense and piercing eyes. A girl came soon after and held Kevin’s hand. That must be Danielle, I thought. They looked very much in love. I smiled for myself as they walked in front of us, to get into the limo that would take us to the disco, giggling and hugging. That’s why I had come here to take time to myself.
After a 10 minute ride, we finally got to the disco. Instantly, we were taken to a private VIP room. Inside, was Demi Lovato. When he saw her, Joe hugged her and kissed her softly. I had heard rumors of their relationship, but didn’t know if it was actually true. After brief introductions, the couple left the room to go to the dance floor. They were soon followed by Kevin and Danielle, and Kathy and Jonathan. I noticed Adri eyeing Dave and then looking at the room’s door. He smiled, grabbed her hand and followed her sister. Cam had met her boyfriend a few minutes ago and now they went down too. I stood up and sat down again by the room’s window, which looked to the dance floor.
“Hi” I heard someone say. I looked up. Nick Jonas was there with me.
“Hey” I replied smiling.
He stood up and came to sit down next to me.
“It’s Debbie, right?”
“Yeah. And you’re Nick?” I said, making a lame joke.
He laughed “Yeah”
I couldn’t help noticing he had the most beautiful smile I had ever seen. And beautiful eyes too. He took a sip from his diet coke as he looked out the window to the happy couples dancing to a slow song downstairs. I, on the other hand, didn’t take my eyes away from him. His perfect jaw looked almost as if he was clenching his teeth through his tightly closed mouth. He had his eyes semi closed, like in all those pictures I had seen of him on the internet. I tilted my head sideways to take a better look. He was holding something, like a chain around his neck, and I assumed it was his dog tag. I had heard he had diabetes of type 1. I remembered when I was younger and ate my grandfathers’ candy and chocolates… those specially made for diabetic people. I shook my head smiling; I bet he bought more than necessary because I ate most of HIS candy.
“What?” he suddenly asked, looking at me, smiling.
“Oh, nothing. I was just…” I stopped, wondering how he would take it if I made a comment about how he reminded me of my passed away grandfather.
“It’s ok, you can tell me”
“It’s nothing, it’s just that you reminded me of someone, when I saw your dog tag” I said finally, nodding towards the silver chain around his neck.
He didn’t stop smiling “Really? Who?” He seemed truly curious.
“My grandfather. He had diabetes too. When I was a kid I would always eat all his candy and his chocolates. But he didn’t mind” I said. “He passed 7 years ago of old age”
“I’m sorry” he said, reaching out to touch my hand.
“Thanks. It’s ok” I said smiling brightly at him.
God. He’s so sexy. Somebody should punish him for it.
He’s too young to be that sexy.
He should be like 5 years older.
Dammit.
We stayed silent once again. Typical, when you meet someone new, and suddenly you run out of topics to talk about. And he was a superstar. What could interest him of my boring life?
“So” he finally said, looking out the window again. “Is your cousin going out with Dave?” he asked.
“No” I asked confused. Was he interested in her? “Why?”
“She’s making out with him”
“NO!” I said surprised. I looked out the window. “YES!!”I shouted happily. “She’s liked him for a few years now!” I clapped.
He laughed at my excitement. “You seem truly happy”
“Of course I am” I said smiling widely.
“Do you have a boyfriend?” he asked suddenly.
Oh no. He did not just ask that. My least favorite topic of conversation. We could talk about the weather. We could talk about plate tectonics; we could talk about Volcanoes, sports, Marketing, Peru, USA, hell we could even talk about Music. But NO. He has to go and ask me if I have a boyfriend.
“No” I said, unsmiling “I don’t”
“Do you want to talk about it?”
Wow. Any other guy would have started interrogating me. Almost like a woman would. Or if not, they would start with their “who would ever hurt/leave/cheat on/ not want/ etc a girl like you?” catch phrase.
“Not really”
“Ok” he said, nodding. “I understand”
“Thanks” I said smiling again. He winked. I almost fell off the couch.
This kid knew he had some sort of power over females. And he was using it on me. And it was working.
