Prologue
It started in New York City. Men and women were weaving in and out of the crowds in the streets, taxi drivers were honking loudly, and pigeons were flying, casting shadows and silhouettes over the towering skyscrapers illuminated in the sunset. In the distance, the Statue of Liberty stood on Ellis Island, a ferry taking the last of the straggler tourists back to the mainland, and the night life of the city had just begun to start.
But past the traffic congested streets and crowded sidewalks, beneath that concrete, another city was also moving, but starting up for the night. Lights began to cast shadows over dark buildings, and one by one, houses, stores, hotels, office buildings, everything began to appear as if someone had flipped the light switch to ON. It was Nightblood City; the place of prostitutes and criminals, gangs and thieves, robbers and hobos on the run—everyone who was in illegal businesses knew about Nightblood. It was the ultimate underground criminal organization, but it was nothing without the Crimson.
The Crimson… They were the four leaders of Nightblood, holding the most power, the most influence, and the most control. Everything in Nightblood was run by the Crimson, and nothing escaped their vision. They had subjects everywhere, reporting the conditions of the city, the whereabouts of certain people, or even just being the casual observer. Order was a necessity, and anything—or anyone who broke a rule was immediately punished.
And then… there was the Luna Astralis. The Moon Star. Another organization, an assassination guild of women. Marked by the tattoo of a crescent moon turned on its curve suspending a star between its points, these assassins were dangerous, deadly, and as cunning as could be. Well trained in the arts of weaponry, fighting, and skill work, there were three levels.
Level one was of the Inceptors. Beginners, only just entering the world of assassins, target, and assignments. Last names were nonexistent; a girl’s first name was her identity, nothing else. Training was an Inceptor’s life, to be prepared when they leveled up and started on assignments.
Level two was of the Medii They were the intermediate assassins, doing low paying and low-risk jobs, like capturing criminals or killing minor and shady characters. A Medius had the goal of building up points, so they could earn their titles as Provectii
The Provectii were the highest level of assassins. It was at this stage when a Provectus was given a surname, normally one that reflected objects that portrayed certain characteristics similar to the personality of the Provectus. It was here that women began taking high-pay jobs and dangerous assignments, leading to the highest mortality rate in all the groups. Death was common, and the average age of death was 25 years of age.
And then there was the Dominus, the highest possible position in the guild. An exceptionally skilled Provectus veteran would normally take the position, proving her excellence and mastery in the arts of assassination better than the rest.
And so there was Nightblood City, and its counterpart Luna Astralis. Two worlds about to be brought a whole lot closer together, all because of one single mission.
