The Mixed Tape (One-Shot Songfic)

ok so you guys - I WROTE SOMETHING!!!!! WOOO!!!! I hope you all like it - Marina did, and it's for her. So here goes..... the song is The Mixed Tape by Jack's Mannequin

The Mixed Tape

This is morning
That's when I spend the most time

When you start the day just to close the curtains

Joe woke up, alone, to the sun streaming through his windows and onto his face. He groaned and buried his face in his pillow. The light still got through, however, and he got up to close the curtains. As he got up he noticed a rainbow on the ceiling. “A rainbow? Wow…way to mock me, Mother Nature,” he thought. “The love of my life leaves, and there’s a RAINBOW on my ceiling. Joyous.”

Not that he could really complain about he leaving, though. It was his own fault. Just because he was famous didn’t mean he was entitled to hit on anything that moved. He didn’t blame her for getting fed up.

“JOE! Every week People and Us Weekly and Bop and god knows how many other magazines have you attached to this girl or that. How is that supposed to make me feel?”

“Baby, don’t worry…you know how I am. You’re the only girl for me - really!”

“Don’t ‘baby’ me! I’m sick of your crap! I’m gone!”

And she was. She just walked out the door, leaving all her stuff behind.

As I'm swimming through the stereo
I'm writing you a symphony of sound

As I rearrange the songs again
This mix could burn a hole in anyone
But it was you I was thinking of

A few hours later, Joe woke up again - for good this time. Her absence was overwhelming - she was still everywhere. Her scent lingered on him, random things of hers were still scattered all over.

And as it turns out, that’s all that was left of hers. Opening the closet, he found half of it empty, a note taped to an empty hanger. She must have come in while he was sleeping.

I read your letter
The one you left when you broke into my house
Retracing every step you made
And you said you meant it
And there's a piece of me in every single
Second of every single day
But if it's true then tell me how it got this way

The note read:

“Joe -

I’m so sorry things had to end this way. You’re still a part of me. I see your face everywhere, your voice is the last one I hear before I go to sleep. You know what you did, though, and you know what to do to make it right again. Don’t come looking for me…it will only make things worse.

-Marina”

Joe read the note once, twice, three times, and still he was confused. She signed it with her real name - the name he never called her by. It seemed so...formal and cold. He hadn’t the slightest idea what to do to make things right. There was only one thing he could think of at the moment, and he hadn’t done it since high school. But he figured it was worth a try.

As I'm cutting through you track by track
I swear to God this mix could sink the sun
But it was you I was thinking of

He sat down at his desk, surrounded by his massive CD collection. He flipped though stacks and stacks, read lyric after lyric, made list after list, until he thought he had it. The perfect mix. The perfect set of songs, lyrically and musically, that would tell her exactly how he felt and, he hoped, would lead her back to him.

Her note said not to go look for her, so he didn’t. He wouldn’t even know where to start anyways. He grabbed his jacket and went to her best friend’s house. He left the CD with her, hoping it would fall into the right hands. Enclosed was a note:

“Marni (is it OK if I still call you that?)

I don’t know what you wanted me to do, but here’s something. I hope it was the right thing. I know what I did was wrong, and I promise I’ll change. Just….come back to me.

-Joe”

He went back home and collapsed on their his bed once again. He hoped she would come back - he didn’t know what he would do without her. He didn’t want to think about that possibility again, so he drifted off again, dreaming of her.

I love Jack's Mannequin and that song. You don't know how many times I've sat down and tried to write a one-shot for this song. But I could never really come up with anything good. But you have done an amazing job with this.
