Chapter 16:
*2 months later*
“I think I need more socks,” Sierra said, tapping her lips with her index finger and staring intently at the suitcase before her. Madeline and I exchanged amused glances as Sierra paced the floor thinking about all she needed for our trip to California. We would be taking a plane in about 5 hours, and Mads and I were already packed, but Sierra was quite the opposite.
“Why didn’t you think of that before the day we leave?” Mads remarked, suppressing a laugh.
“And I think the better question is who needs socks in California during Spring Break?” I said, not suppressing my laugh at all.
Sierra snapped her head up and glared at me. “Hey! It gets cold at night there!” she snapped, clearly not amused.
I laughed at her again. She would get over it. “Well, we don’t have time to get you more socks. We have to leave. So I guess your feet are going to have to freeze every night that we’re there,” I said, grinning evilly at her.
She picked up a pillow off her bed and threw it at me before proceeding to try to stuff everything into the suitcase and try to make it close.
I fiddled with my hands. I was getting really impatient with Sierra. I wanted to get moving so I would be occupied enough to stop counting the minutes until I see Kevin again. Right now, it was about 450, and that was too many for me.
I was relieved when my phone started to buzz in my pocket and I smiled when I pulled it out and saw who it was calling me.
“Hey, Tyler!” I exclaimed, causing Mads and Sierra to shoot me annoyed glances. They weren’t exactly ecstatic about my revived friendship with Tyler. About a month ago, he and I had decided to start talking again, putting everything that had happened in the past behind us. I couldn’t have been happier. Tyler had been, in fact, one of my best friends before he became my boyfriend. And now, I had an amazing boyfriend and my best friend back. We often had late night talks that would last hours, and I told him everything. He was actually a big supporter of my relationship with Kevin, and often gave me advice when I started to lose my head because of the long distance between us. I depended on Tyler and I was glad to have him back as a friend. But you could tell Mads and Sierra didn’t trust him and they especially hated that I told him everything about our relationships with the boys. But I knew they were wrong, Tyler was completely trustworthy.
“Hey,” he said, “You getting ready to leave?”
“Yeah, if Sierra would just hurry up,” I answered, glaring at Sierra. She completely ignored me while she struggled to zip up her suitcase.
“Okay, well cool,” Tyler said, “I just wanted to tell you to have a safe trip.”
“Aw, thanks Ty,” I giggled. I loved how much he still cared about me. “You’re so swee—“
My phone beeped, informing me that I had another incoming call. I pulled the phone away from my ear and squealed silently to myself when I saw who it was.
“Hey Ty, I got to go,” I said quickly, “The boyfriend’s calling.”
“Oh, okay. Well, talk to you later. You will have to tell me all about your trip,” he said.
“Will do,” I said before switching over to the other call. “Hey, sweetie,” I cooed.
“Hey, babe,” Kevin cooed back, laughing a bit. “Were you just on another call?”
“Um…yeah,” I said, hesitating a bit. Kevin knew about my reconciliation with Tyler, but he didn’t seem too excited about it. I didn’t blame him, so I usually tried to avoid letting him know how much I actually talked to Tyler. “I was talking to Tyler.”
“Oh,” he said. I could here a tinge of glumness in his voice. He definitely wasn’t wild about me talking to Tyler. “Well, I just wanted to check up on you girls. And Joe was worried about Sierra,” Kevin said chuckling.
“Was not!” I could hear Joe’s muffled voice whine from the other end of the phone.
I giggled, looking at Sierra, knowing her boyfriend probably really was worrying her. “Aw, leave Joe alone, Kevin,” I scolded, wishing I could elbow him from this far away. “And why aren’t you worried about me?” I asked playfully, biting my lip and hoping he would answer correctly.
“I…uh…I…” he stuttered, causing me to giggle slightly at his adorable loss of words. “I…um…knew that you were a strong, independent woman and could take care of yourself. And…I…am worried about you…”
“Kev, I get it,” I giggled, “I was kidding.”
I heard him sigh slightly in relief. “I knew that,” he said. I imagined him beaming at me as if nothing had happened, although there would be a little red in his cheeks from embarrassment, and then pulling me into his arms and kissing the top of my head. I wished more than anything that I was with him at that moment.
About 430 minutes to go.

Biting my nail nervously, I navigated my way through the unfamiliar airport. Reading a big sign above me that said “Baggage Claim”, I turned and followed the direction it was pointing. Sierra and Madeline trailed behind me, lugging their heavy carry-ons with them.
We exited through security and walked up to the carousel assigned to our plane. As we waited for the luggage to start coming, we all looked around for any sign of our boyfriends or someone associated with them. But we didn’t see anyone.
“Lyssy,” I heard Sierra say from beside me. I snapped my head around and looked at her. She had an expression on her face that showed me she was feeling the same way as me: anxious.
“Yeah?” I asked her, starting to look around for the boys again.
“Um…who did they say was picking us up?” she asked nervously.
“I don’t know. They just said someone would be here to meet us,” I responded, biting my lip.
“Would you two calm down,” Madeline said, laughing slightly at us. “It’s not like they’re going to leave us here.”
Always the voice of reason, that Mads.
I didn’t respond, but I knew she was right. Sierra and I were both a mess. Good thing Madeline was there to keep our heads level.
I felt my phone vibrate in my back pocket, making me jump slightly. I hoped no one had seen that. I side-glanced at Mads to see that she was smirking at me; yup, she saw. I glared at her before I answered the call, too frazzled to even remember to look to see who was calling me.
“Um…hello?” I said, trying to regain my composure.
I really need to get over myself.
“Um…hello? That’s all you can say to me,” a familiar voice said from the other end of the line.
“Um…no,” I giggled. “Hey, who’s picking us up?”
“I don’t know,” Kevin said.
“Kev!” I snapped, “What do you mean you don’t know?!” I didn’t mean to snap at him, but he wasn’t helping my nerves at all.
“Calm down, sweetie. I was kidding,” he said softly, making my nerves ease out a little. I didn’t know why I was so nervous to see him. I guess that happens when you don’t see your boyfriend very often.
“Well, okay, so who’s picking us up?” I said, demanding that he get to the point.
“Turn around,” Kevin said. I did as I was told and turned to see a tall, thin figure, wearing a football jersey, jeans, tennis shoes, a baseball cap, and dark sunglasses, with an iphone held up to his ear. To a normal passerby, he’d look like a normal guy. But to me, he looked like a million bucks. It was Kevin.
He smiled at me and took the phone from his ear, tucking it in his pocket and opening his arms. At that, I tucked my own phone away before sprinting into his arms and crashing my lips into his, kissing him passionately.
He pulled away chuckling a little. “Good to see you too,” he said, beaming, before he pressed his lips to mine again.
“I’ve missed you,” I whispered as I pulled away pressed my forehead to his and he wrapped his arms tightly around my waist.
“I’ve missed you more,” he whispered back, giving me a small peck on my lips before he grabbed my hand and led me over to the carousel, where I saw a disguised Nick and Joe helping their girlfriends retrieve their luggage.
I pointed mine out to Kevin and he soon came back pulling my oversized suitcase with ease. He set it down in front of me and then pulled me back into his arms again. “So are you ready for the best Spring Break of your life?” he said, smiling his signature smile.
“You bet I am,” I said, smirking at him before pressing my lips to his.
