Chapter 17
Cupid must rinse this all away
His gaze, so desperate and pleading as he walked over to my bed side. It was hard to even look at him. Kevin slowly rose up from his seat. “Well take a seat, I’ll be out here with Nick.” Kevin said pulling up the chair for Joe, walking towards the door. He practically pulled Nick out of the doorway, shutting the door behind him as Joe sat down with his hands folded together.
“So, how are you doing?” He asked, his eyes dipping over my body and all the machines hooked up to it. “Meh, just peachy.” I replied with a quiet laugh. “How about yourself?” I asked straightening up a bit, my sluggish position wasn’t exactly engaging in this conversation. “Okay I guess, Nick is pretty mad.” Joe mumbled quietly, looking away with a grimace forming on his face.
A brief sigh escaped my lips as I put my hand to my head; it pounded sending a throbbing pain throughout my body, as if my body hadn’t endured enough bruises and scars. Oh the bliss. I caused two siblings to turn on each other, well that just added to my pile of guilty conscience.
“Hm, and how do you feel about that?” I asked curiously, I wondered if it bothered him at all that both he and his brother were hurting each others feelings. I questioned how a girl like me could shatter a bond just like that, it simply stunned me and not in a good way either.
“I don’t know.” Joe muttered just above a whisper, he looked up at me with a scattered look. I didn’t expect him to put some depth into his statement however. “It’s just, when I finally meet a girl like you, that I really like, it’s almost as if Nick just wants you, because I do too.” Joe tried to explain, I didn’t quite understand what he meant. Well maybe I did, maybe I just didn’t want to understand. I don’t think he expected me to reply, he just blankly stared ahead of him, occasionally letting his glance slide over my figure.
“April, no matter what happens, can you promise me one thing?” He asked, his hand slowly inching closer to mine as he it just lingered around it, his fingertips lightly brushing over my hand’s palm. “Anything.” I spoke quietly, looking at him with spiking curiosity. “We’ll be friends, no matter what happens. Right?” Joe asked, biting his bottom lip looking me in the eye. “Of course, I promise.”
A small smile, full of hope crept on his face as he nodded. “I should go, before Nick storms in and kicks my butt.” Joe said with a chuckle, getting a giggle out of me. He always had a cheerful mood around him, trying to crack everyone up. “Get well soon.” He whispered, taking my hand as he pressed his lips against it. That took my breath away, it may be uber cliché but it was also uber romantic if a guy was willing to brave the cliché.
He left, leaving me breathless for a moment. Not much later the door slowly swung open as the curly headed brother walked in. Not Kevin, it was Nick.
Without a word he pulled up the chair and sat down at my bedside, looking at me with a concerned look etched on his face. He got up, leaning his hands on the supporting bars on my bedside, I could read off of his face he was dying to talk to me for some reason.
“You should sleep, you look exhausted.” He whispered quietly, as he gently ran the outside of his hand over my cheek. I smiled softly, he knew me all too well. “But, we should talk-.” I protested, but he firmly shook his head. “No, you need to rest April and you know it.” He stated, and I knew he made up his mind and there was no turning back from there on. “I’ll be right here.” Nick added in a more gentle and tender tone, sliding back down into the chair. A smile curved on my lips, picking up the pillow and stuffing it back behind me as my body slowly lowered back down to it, my head digging away in the feathery pillow.
“Thanks Nick. Goodnight.” I yawned letting my eyelids cover my eyes.
Oh I had a lot on my mind.
