Chapter 1.
“And are you sure you have everything you need?” my mother, Claire asked. “Yes mom! For the millionth time, I’ll be fine. I promise.” I reassured her. “It’s just that you’re my baby and…” “Mom” I whined as we reached a stoplight and I gave her a horrified look. “Okay okay. I’ll be quiet now.” She told me defensively. “Thank you” I mumbled. The stoplight turned green as my mother stepped on the gas pedal and raced down the street. Staring out the window, I watched as the cars sped past with such speed that I had to blink twice to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating. We drove down the small streets of Tapleytown as I daydreamed about my hometown back in San Diego.
My single mother had recently decided that my life was too full of glitz and glamour. She wanted me to have the same small town childhood that she had growing up. So, to achieve this new decision, we moved. But, of course, she couldn’t pick some small little town with nice weather and friendly people; no, she had to pick one of the most miserable places I have ever seen in my life. From what I have experiences, the weather here was the exact opposite of San Diego. Instead of clear skies and the bright sun, there was clouds and rain. Lots of rain. “Adrianna, sweetie.” “Mmm” I replied as I slowly broke out of my trance and moved my attention to my mother. “We’re here.” she told me as she cut the engine. Sighing, I looked over the dashboard to see the local high school staring right back at me. Scanning the parking lot, I saw a relatively small crowd of teenagers surrounding a van packed with luggage. I stepped out of the car as I grabbed my bag from the backseat and started walking towards the van. “Adrianna” my mother called out as she ran after me. I spun around on my heels and stared at her. “Be careful.” she warned me as she gave me a hug and a kiss on the cheek. “Mom” I complained as I quickly glanced over to make sure no one was looking. “Okay, sorry.” she told me with a laugh. Puling back, she gave me one last glance then headed back towards the car. I heard the engine roar to life as she drove through the parking lot. “Have fun” she yelled as she spun onto the road and down the street. I kept my eyes locked on the car as it slowly started to disappear. Finally, I gave up and turned back around. This is ridiculous, I thought to myself as I gawked at the crowd of people. I couldn’t seem to get my feet to move as my mind raced with worry. In Tapleytown, it was tradition for the new graduating class of year to go camping for a few days before school started. And, of course, my mother thought that this new found tradition would be a great opportunity for me to get to know my classmates. I, on the other hand, had strongly disagreed with her opinion. But, somehow I ended up coming because of her clever ‘guilt trip’ techniques. Sighing, I forced myself to move as I looked for somebody to talk to. Tripping over my feet, I headed over to a group of girls that were standing a few feet away from the van. I started to get nervous as I got closer and closer- my gut feeling was telling me to turn around and run. But, before I could make a decision, the blonde girl turned around and looked at me. Her eyes sparkled as a grin spread across her face and she skipped over. I stiffened up and froze in my spot as I saw the other two girls follow suit. “Hi! I’m Lena” the blonde girl told me as she extended her hand. I shook her hand as I looked her over. She was wearing a purple t-shirt with blue skinny jeans. She had her long platinum blonde hair tied back in a bun on top of her head and a silver heart hung around her neck. After glancing at her for a minute, I moved my gaze over to the two other girls behind her. The brunette was wearing red shorts and a black school sweater. Her long curly hair waved in the breeze as she stared back at me. The girl beside the brunette was just about the same height as Lena. She wore black skinny jeans and a green long sleeved shirt. Her reddish bronze hair bounced against her shoulders as she linked arms with Lena. “This is Haley and Darcy.” She pointed to the redhead beside her and then to the brunette who was now standing on her other side. “I’m Adri” I told them in almost a whisper as I gave a weak smile. They all smiled at me until all of a sudden, something caught everyone’s eye. I followed their gazes as I turned around. Standing on the far side of the parking lot was a group of four people crowded around a bright shiny red corvette. My mouth dropped as I stared at them in awe. All of them looked more like gods rather than actual human beings. I tilted my head to the side as I tried to register the images I saw in front of me. The two girls were leaning against the bumper of the car as the two older boys stood on either side of them. The oldest girl looked to be around my age. Her long curly golden honey hair fell off her shoulders as she giggled and hit the boy beside her. The other girl looked to be a couple years younger. Her hair was the same reddish bronze colour as Haley’s. It was cut just below her ear and she wore it pin straight so that it would frame her face perfectly. When I looked at the guys, I almost fainted. Both of them had the same striking features and stance. The boy closest to the oldest girl was also a blonde. His hair was a mop of curls as the wind blew a ringlet in his eye and he brushed it away. Last of all, there was the boy who stood the farthest away from me. For some reason, he was the only one who had really caught my attention. I studied him closely as I watched him talk to the others. He had dark chocolate coloured hair that swept across his face in messy disarray. He wore a white wife beater that hugged his chest and a brown leather jacket. Suddenly, I realised that I shouldn’t have been staring at all. I pulled my eyes away from them as I looked back at Darcy. “Who are they?” I asked in a daze. “I have no idea.” she said blankly as she stared behind me. “Okay everyone! Let’s get ready to go!” I heard a voice call out. I looked over to see one of the teachers standing around the van and waving everyone over. I gave a quick glance to see the four teenagers coming towards me. Without thinking, I grabbed Lena’s hand and started dragging them to the front of the crowd by the van. Anxiously, I waited for the teacher to do the attendance as I glanced back at the four teenagers from the red corvette. When I looked back, I saw the brunette boy staring back at me. Our eyes locked as he looked at me in disgust. I blinked trying to understand the threatening gaze. Looking closer, I realised that his eyes were a different colour than anything I had ever seen before. Instead of being brown, green or blue, his eyes were a golden yellow colour – just like topaz. He flashed a smile at me as he gave me an evil grin. I stumbled back in shock as I gripped onto Haley for support. He laughed as he gave me a wink and moved his gaze back to the teacher. I stood there in shock as Haley pulled on my arm. “Adri” she hissed in my ear. “Huh” I asked as I looked at her. “Adrianna Scott” the teacher called out. “Adri. It’s Adri” I corrected him. “Oh well it’s nice to have you here. I’m Mr. Moore” he told me with a smile. I smiled back as he started to call out more names. “Eloise, Jack and Pieter Clarke” Mr Moore asked. “Here” I heard a velvet voice call out from behind me. I looked around to see the four teenagers from the corvette raise their hands. “We brought our sister Maria with us. I hope that’s okay.” the girl I assumed was Eloise told him. Mr. Moore looked taken back from her voice; he nodded his head as he checked something off on his clipboard. “That’s perfectly fine.” he replied. I glanced back to see the redhead bounce up and down in excitement as she hugged her sister. “So now that everyone is here, let’s figure out riding arrangements.” he said as he took out a piece of paper. He started calling out names until only me and the Clarkes were left. “Now what are we going to do with you.” he asked as he looked down at me. “She can ride with us” the boy I thought was Pieter suggested. I looked over to Lena, Haley and Darcy in horror as I bit my lip and they shrugged their shoulders helplessly. “Why thank you Pieter. Do you know where we’re going?” Mr. Moore asked. “I can follow everyone else.” Pieter told him. Mr. Moore shook his head in agreement as he started walking towards his car. “Come on” Pieter told me in a seducing yet disgusted voice. Without a second thought, I followed him to the car. I stood on the other side as I watched Jack, Eloise and Maria slide into the backseat. “Get in” Pieter hissed at me as his golden eyes flashed black. I looked appalled as I crossed my arms across my chest and balanced out my weight. “What if I don’t want to” I hissed back. “Adri, get in.” he warned as he stared at me. I felt chills go down my spine as I gave in. I heaved a sigh as I opened the door and hopped inside. “Buckle up” he told me through pressed lips. I obeyed as I put my seatbelt on and Pieter turned on the engine. Just great, I thought to myself as he pulled out of the driveway. I’m in town for two seconds and someone already hates me. I stared out the window as silence filled the car and Pieter sped down the road.
