We'll do it all
Everything
On our own.
We don't need
Anything
Or anyone
Joseph sat on the cold grass looking down over the small town he called home. Sitting next to the tall, dark haired boy was none other than his best friend in the entire world. Jayde pushed a lock of her also dark hair behind her ear. The two had been sitting silently on the hill for over an hour, just talking. It was one of the two’s ‘things’ to come up on the hill and look over the town on star filled nights like this. They would talk about everything that was on their minds. They didn’t keep anything from each other. Well, almost anything.
“We’re the perfect team, Joe.” Jayde said to her best friend of eighteen years. They had been friends from the very start. Always together. The few months before Jayde had been born are the only times they hadn’t known each other.
“We can do anything together. With no one else. We’re gonna do it all, go everywhere.” Joe exclaimed about the two’s plans. They wanted to travel and try new things that no one they knew had ever done. They figured that together they would accomplish all of their goals.
“So where are we going first commander Joe?” Jayde asked him playfully using the nickname he earned himself back when they were kids. Joe was in a bad mood one day when Jayde came over. He was bossing everyone around and getting on everyone’s nerves. Jayde was the only one that could fix that. ‘Who do you think you are? Commander Joe?’ she yelled at him when he told her to clean up the bag of marbles he spilt all over the room. After that they both started laughing and laughing. They didn’t really understand why, but the name stuck.
“I was thinking Australia or maybe Zimbabwe.” He grinned at her, secretly causing her heart to skip a beat. She laughed her signature laugh. It was secretly Joe’s favorite sound in the world. He had been hearing it all his life, but tonight it seemed even more special.
“Sounds like a plan, best friend in the world.” Jayde said once she stopped laughing. Joe just smiled, secretly wishing to be more.
If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?
“What if there was a change in plans?” Joe asked thinking about what he was going to say.
“What do you mean?” Jayde sounded confused. Joe looked at her. The stars were reflecting in her beautiful light brown eyes, making them glow.
“Well what if I decided that I didn’t want to go to Zimbabwe any more. What if I decided to just stay right here? Would you lay here with me, or would you hop onto the next flight to Zimbabwe?” Joe asked with a hint of laughter in his soft, comforting voice that Jayde just adored. She laughed and rolled her eyes at him. “Well?” Joe pleaded for an answer as he laid down on the grass, his strong arms behind his head as if he were relaxing.
“Well, you know how much I love the Zimbabweans..” Jayde started, causing Joe to chuckle. “But, if I really did have to choose, I’d forget that they even existed and stay right here and lie with you.” She smiled and said as if she was just trying to be funny, but she was one hundred percent serious.
“I bet you would.” Joe said sarcastically. Jayde laid down right next to him.
“The sky looks so magical tonight.” Jayde practically whispered, changing the subject. There were thousands of bright stars out that night. They shined brighter than either of them remembered them shining on their previous nights on the hill. You wouldn’t have even been able to tell that the moon was just a sliver from all the light they gave off.
“It does, doesn’t it?” Joe said quietly.
I don't quite know
How to say
How I feel
Those three words
Are said too much
They're not enough
“What do you think about love?” Joe asked out of no where. He didn’t really know how to say how he really felt, but he wanted to know what Jayde thought about it.
“I think love is something special. Something you should only say when you mean it. People say ‘I love you’ like it’s nothing these days. When you say it, you should mean it and that’s that.” She said with a serious tone in her voice. Joe smiled.
“That, my friend, is very deep.” He joked. She laughed and lightly hit him on the shoulder.
“You’re the one who asked! Why did you want to know, anyway?” Jayde gave him a questioning look. He didn’t want to say the true reason why he wanted to know.
“I was just thinking about it.” He shrugged.
“Well, then how do you feel about it?” Jayde asked, now curious to what his answer would be.
“I don’t quite know how to explain how I feel about it. I just know that the girl I fall in love with is going to be something special. When I’m with her, nothing can bring me down. I’ll tell her everything and she’ll do the same in return. She’ll be the only one that understands me. We’ll always have fun together and we’ll have so much in common. And I know that I’ll tell her that I love her when the time is right. I just pray that she’ll feel the same way.” Joe said sincerely, looking at the girl he was talking about the whole time.
“Aw, how sweet.” Jayde smiled unaware that he had been talking about her. She wished he was, though.
If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?
Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life
“Aren’t I the sweetest?” Joseph smiled showing his set of perfect teeth. Jayde loved when he did that. She smiled back at him.
“Sweet as sugar.” She said using sarcasm. He playfully rolled his brown eyes.
“I just want to stay here forever. Up here, there’s nothing to worry about. We can just forget everything.” Joe said quietly and looked straight ahead at the star-filled sky.
“If only there was a way we could. I’m sick of all the drama. You’re the only one that understands, Joe. I just want to forget all the pressures of school, swim practice, relationships, all that stuff. You know what I mean?” She sighed.
“I understand completely. You know what we need to do?” He asked her as he came up with an idea.
“What do we need to do?”
“We need to just break the rules. Forget the problems and have fun. We’re not gonna be young forever. Now’s our chance.” Joe said, letting out what was on his mind.
“You know what? You’re right.” Jayde said pausing as she thought to herself. “Oh, what I would do to be a little kid again. To not care about anything except having fun. Now, that, is the life.”
Joe smiled at her. “Well then, enough talking about it. Let’s live it.”
Let's waste time
Chasing cars
Around our heads
I need your grace
To remind me
To find my own
Joseph sat up and grabbed his friend’s hand, pulling her to her feet along with him.
“What do you mean by that?” Jayde asked him as she dusted the grass off of her blue jeans.
“What I mean is, let’s just have fun. Act crazy, spin in circles, be a little kid again!” Joe exclaimed happily as he began spinning in circles. Jayde laughed.
“Joseph Adam Jonas, you are officially weird.” She shook her head at him smiling.
“You have a problem with that?” He asked laughing as he continued to spin wildly.
“No, I like it.” She smiled. Joe felt relieved and slowed down a little bit.
“Well then, would you like to join me?” He asked playfully raising an eyebrow at her.
“Don’t mind if I do.” She giggled and started spinning around in circles next to him. He watched in awe as she spun. Her thick brown hair flew around her face, her arms out to balance her slim figure, the way her feet crossed each other. She was so graceful and Joe loved it. “Come on Joseph!” Jayde exclaimed at him, bringing him out of his stare. She grabbed his hands and spun him around with her. They were laughing and giggling as they twirled around holding hands. Both of them having more fun than they can remember having in a long time.
If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?
Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life
After a while of spinning and laughing, the two friends collapsed on the ground, laying next to each other.
“I am so dizzy!” Joe yelled holding his head in his hands while laughing.
“Oh my gosh I know!” Jayde laughed closing her eyes, trying to get the world to stop moving. Once their eyes adjusted and their heads stopped spinning they stopped laughing and looked at each other.
“That was definitely one of the craziest, yet most fun experiences I’ve ever had.” Joe smiled as he looked deep into Jayde’s eyes that were staring back into his, inches away.
“I totally agree.” She smiled at him. “I don’t think that it would have been as fun with anyone else, though. Just you.” She whispered through the grin on her face.
Joe smiled back and Jayde felt the butterflies in her stomach that she always felt when he smiled at her like that. It’s not that she was nervous, she just felt something special when he looked at her like that.
“I remember when we were little kids, we’d do crazy stuff like this all the time.” Joe said quietly. Jayde nodded slightly, her cheek still up against the ground as she laid there across from Joe who was in the same position. “Remember when we thought it would be fun to have that somersault contest back in 4th grade?” Joe laughed at the memory.
“Yeah!” Jayde’s face lit up at the memory. “We were at the top of the hill behind your house and we bet that whoever made it to the bottom first would win the last cupcake from Kevin’s birthday party!” Joe smiled at the fact she remembered.
“Yeah, I was so psyched to beat you and get that cupcake that I forgot that it had rained earlier..” Joe paused and Jayde picked up where he left off.
“And we ended up tumbling down the hill into a huge pile of mud!” She laughed.
“You claimed it was a tie so we rolled around in the mud, wrestling over the cupcake.” Joe laughed as he pictured the two fighting over the chocolate cupcake in the mud.
“Then we ran as fast as our little ten year old legs could go, into your kitchen, covered in mud, just to find that Nicholas had just finished eating the last cupcake.” Jayde chuckled at the thought of it.
“Good times.” Joe sighed with a smile on his face.
“Yeah, but I so won.” Jayde smirked at him.
“Um, I think not!” He protested.
“You know I did!”
“No you didn’t!”
“Yes I did!”
“No you didn’t!” The two were laughing as they argued over who won.
“Do we need to have another wrestling match to prove it?” Jayde asked with an eyebrow raised. Joe smiled.
“I think we do.” He said as he grabbed her arms and started rolling around on the cold grass. They laughed and relived their precious memories as they tried to pin each other down under the starlit sky.
All that I am
All that I ever was
Is here in your perfect eyes, they're all I can see
“You’re not going to beat me!” Joe laughed as he held Jayde’s shoulders against the ground for about a second. Jayde smirked at him and practically threw him off of her and she laid on top of him, using all of her strength to push his shoulders down. He laughed. At the crazy face she made. Her forehead was scrunched up and her nose was too. She looked like she was trying so hard, he almost hesitated to turn the tables on her, like she did to him.
“When did you get so strong?” Jayde asked, still pushing on his muscular shoulders.
“Don’t seem so surprised!” Joe laughed and pushed Jayde off of him, his body now towering over hers. Jayde, who was now laying on the ground, pretty much gave up.
“Fine, fine you win!” She surrendered, yet Joe didn’t move. He was just slightly smiling as he looked into her eyes. “Joe? Why are you looking at me like that?” She asked confused at why Joe was still in the same position he was before.
“Your eyes.” He said simply.
“Huh? What’s wrong with my eyes?” She asked him, lifting a hand to feel if there was something on them.
“No,” He said moving her hand away from her face. His fingers brushed the strands of hair that were covering her forehead. “They’re perfect.”
Jayde blushed, not quite knowing what to say. “Thanks.” She said quietly, a smile forming on her face. Her heart was racing. The boy she loved thought she was perfect, well her eyes at least.
“No problem.” He smiled back at her. They awkwardly stared at each other for a few minutes until Joe finally spoke up.
“I should probably get off you now..” He said as he moved from the awkward position he was in and laid down on the ground.
“Yeah, that might be a good idea..” Jayde said resting her head on the grass. They laid in silence for a few minutes, just staring at the dark sky. Even though no sound came from their mouths, in their heads, there was a lot of commotion.
I don't know where
Confused about how as well
Just know that these things will never change for us at all
“Jayde,” Joe whispered, still looking at the sky.
“Yeah?” She responded not taking her eyes off of the brightest star she saw. She silently made a wish on it, and then focused back on Joseph.
“I’ve been thinking... A lot.” He said with a hint of nervousness showing in his voice.
“About what?” Jayde asked curiously.
“Well, no matter what I say, are we gonna stay friends forever?” Joe asked before he could allow him self to say anything else.
“Joseph, don’t be silly. Of course we’re going to be friends forever. Not only that, but best friends. I promise you that.” She smiled at him which caused his beating heart to slow down a bit, getting back to its normal rate.
“Are you sure?” He asked again to make sure. What he wanted to tell her needed extra conformation that they would still be as good as friends as they were now.
“Joe, we’ve been best friends since we were born! Now, I don’t know where our lives are going to take us or even how we’ll get there, but always remember that our friendship will never change. No one and nothing could take it away.” Jayde said smiling at him the whole time. She really wanted to know what he had to tell her. “So you can tell me anything, Joe.”
“Yeah, you’re right. And thanks.” Joe smiled at her. His mind was racing with thoughts, how could she be so perfect?
“So, what did you want to tell me?” Jayde asked him, becoming impatient with how long it was taking him to answer.
“Well, there’s this girl,” He paused to take a deep breath and shake off his nerves. Jayde just gave him a gentle smile, persuading him to go on. “And she is something special. When I’m with her, nothing can bring me down. I tell her everything and she does the same in return. She’s the only one that understands me. We always have fun when we’re together and we have so much in common. And, I think, the time is right for me to tell her those three special words. I just pray that she’ll say them back.”
Jayde smiled as if she were happy for him, but on the inside she wished he thought of her like that. “Joe, don’t worry. I bet she’ll say them back to you. She’s a lucky girl.” She said sighing quietly.
“Are you sure?” Joe asked her, a smile forming on his face.
“Positive.” Jayde tried to smile, but looked down at the ground.
“Jayde,”
“Yeah Joe?” She asked as she picked a few blades of grass out of the dirt. Joe lifted her head up to face her, his hand gently holding her chin. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. When he opened his eyes, the girl he found most special to him was looking back. Her brown eyes glistening, causing his heart to beat loudly.
“Jayde,” he repeated nervously, “I love you.”
Shock ran through Jayde’s thin body. Did Joe actually just say that? Did he really love her? She sat wide eyed as Joe gave her a puzzling look.
“You promised she’d say it back.” He said quietly, still confused about her being speechless.
“Joe, Joe. I love you, too.” She finally let out. Those words had been trapped inside of both of them for the longest time. Letting them out for each other to hear was a huge relief for both of them, but the fact that they loved each other back was an even better feeling.
“Really?!” Joe’s face lit up. Jayde nodded happily, too happy for words. Joe engulfed her in a huge hug. Neither of them wanted to let go, but they finally did after about five minutes.
“I don’t even know what to say.. You really love me?” Joe asked, his voice sounding happier than ever before.
“Yes Joseph, I do.” Jayde smiled at him. Neither of them could believe it.
“Well, I love you too.” Joe added with a grin.
“Finally.” Jayde laughed. Joe smiled at her and moved in closer to her. Joe closed his eyes and placed his lips on hers, the girl of his dreams.
If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?
