Here's a one shot for Crystal! I got this idea from some kids at school haha. Let me know what you think. Hope you like it :D
You Blinked
“You blinked!”
“Did not!”
“Yeah you did!”
“No I didn’t, Joe!”
“Yeah, just now!”
“You are such a cheater!” Crystal laughed at her best friend, Joe. Every time they hung out he seemed to always challenge her to a staring contest and every time he was about to cave in and blink, he found a way to trick her into blinking first. You’d think that by now she would expect it, but she still falls for it every time. To this day, she hasn’t won a staring contest against Joe once.
“I am not! I’m just… clever.” He stated with a smirk on his face.
“Yeah, sure.” Crystal laughed.
“How about a rematch?” Joe suggested hopefully. Crystal sighed.
“Joe, I think fourteen rematches is enough for one day. And besides, my eyes are starting to hurt.” She said as she rubbed her eyes. Joe didn’t want to admit it, but he loved her eyes. They were different than any he had ever seen. One was a bluish green color, while the other was mostly brown with a hint of that spectacular color that made up the first one. This was one of the many things Joe secretly loved about her, and it was probably one of his top favorites. From the moment Joe noticed how unique and beautiful they were, he wanted to find a way to be able to just look right into them without it being awkward. And that’s how the staring contests came about. But still, Joe was a competitive guy. So even though it wasn’t the purpose of the game for him, he still had to win every time.
“Awe. Come on, one more time!” Joe pouted, sticking his bottom lip out and making his eyes scream with disappointment.
“Sorry, not falling for that one again.” Crystal pointed her finger at Joe’s sad face and laughed slightly. “You know you’re going to win, so what’s the point?”
Joe didn’t want to tell her why he really wanted to challenge her again, so he said the first thing he could think of. “I’m addicted to staring.” He said with a completely serious tone, but when he realized what he said, he wanted to kick himself.
“To be honest, I don’t doubt that at all.” Crystal chuckled and shook her head at Joe who was blushing.
“Okay, okay. It’s just that I really like staring contests! Come on. I can’t do it myself!” Joe tried again to convince her, but it didn’t work.
“Count me in! You’re going down, Joe!” Frankie declared as he walked into the room. Joe sighed. This is not what he wanted. He noticed Crystal laughing to herself our of the corner of his eye. Joe looked directly at Frankie who was now sitting across from him at the table. Crystal had moved to sitting on the couch next to them.
“Fine, Tank. Let’s do this.” Joe said to his little brother who’s eyes were shut tight. Joe gave him a weird look. “Man, what are you doing? That’s not how you play…”
“I know that!” Frankie said, opening his eyes just to roll them at his brother and then close them again. “I’m getting prepared! Just say ‘go’ when you’re ready.” Frankie said in a demanding tone that shocked Joe a bit, but made Crystal laugh again.
“Okay? Um, go.” Joe said and Frankie opened his eyes immediately and stared straight at Joe’s. Joe wanted to laugh, but that might cause him to blink, and he was not about to lose a staring contest to his little brother. After about ten seconds, Frankie's eyes shut for a split second.
“Ha! You blinked!” Joe stated and Frankie glared at him.
“Did not!”
“Frank, don’t start this!”
“Rematch! Rematch!” Frankie said and pounded his fists on the table. Joe sighed again. Why couldn’t Crystal have just agreed to another rematch? He thought. Speaking of Crystal, she got up from her seated position and got Joe’s attention over Frankie’s chants.
“I’ll be back. I’m going to go get a drink.” She told him and walked out towards the kitchen. When she was gone, Joe put his face in his hands.
“What’s wrong, Joe?” Frankie asked him worriedly. Joe looked up at him with an emotionless face.
“It’s a long story, Frank…” Joe trailed off. Frankie got a devious grin on his face. “Frankie… what’s with that look?” Joe asked him, sounding a bit worried himself now.
“You like her, don’t you. You like Crystal! You like her!” Frankie practically shouted with joy.
“Shhh! Hey, be quiet man!” Joe commanded his brother. He looked around to make sure no one heard. Frankie just kept grinning.
“I knew it!” Frankie cheered quietly. “So are you going to tell her?”
“Frankie, come on. I can’t just tell her!” Joe explained as if it were obvious.
“Why not?”
“Well, because,” Joe thought to himself, but couldn’t really think of a good enough reason. “Because, I can’t.”
“Oh, that makes sense.” Frankie said seriously. “Well, then I have an idea.” He added and wiggled his eyebrows at Joe, causing him to laugh.
“Oh do you? What is it?” Joe asked him with a chuckle. Frankie motioned for him to come closer so he could whisper the plan in his ear. When he finished telling him, Joe sat back in his chair and smiled. “I like it. Thanks Frankie.”
“Hey, no big.” Frankie put his hands in the air, as if saying ‘it was nothing.’ “Here she comes, follow my lead.” Frankie said as Crystal opened the door and sat back down on the couch.
“Okay, winner verses Crystal!” Frankie announced. Crystal raised one of her eye brows at him.
“Verses who now?” She asked if she hadn’t heard him correctly.
“Come on, Crystal. Just once.” Frankie begged. He used the pouting face that Joe had tried to use earlier. She got a look on her face that showed she thought Frankie looked adorable.
“Oh okay. How can I say no to that?” She smiled and took a sip of the drink in her cup. Joe was glad she had agreed but wondered how Frankie could get the pout to work on her when he couldn’t.
“Okay, ready Frankie?” Joe asked.
“Yes sir. On three.” Frankie said and quickly winked at his older brother. Joe smiled and Frankie counted down. “One, two, three.” And with that the two brothers started the contest. Frankie let about fifteen seconds pass before dramatically blinking his eyes.
“Aw, looks like you lost, Frankie!” Joe said with an obviously fake-surprised voice.
“Oh man! Too bad.” Frankie pretended to be upset, but immediately perked up and looked at Crystal, “Now you have to verse Joe!”
“Ha, okay little man.” Crystal laughed and set her drink on the side table and got up from the couch. She went over and took Frankie’s spot at the table across from Joe. He couldn’t help but smile at her as she pushed her brown hair behind her ears and out of her face.
“You ready?” Joe asked, feeling nervous.
“Yes, as a matter of fact I am. And I bet you wont be able to make me blink this time.” Crystal said confidently.
“Oh, I bet I will.” Joe smiled and glanced over at Frankie who gave him a thumbs up.
“Okay guys, on the count of three.” Frankie said. “One, two, three!” Joe and Crystal started to stare. Joe was immediately lost in the beauty of her eyes. He was so lost that he almost forgot about his plan. It had been about twenty seconds of non stop staring when Crystal smirked at Joe. “Don’t blink.” She whisper-taunted him and he just smiled.
“Don’t move.” He whispered back and leaned over the table, planting a soft kiss on her lips. She was hesitant at first, but soon began to kiss him back. Frankie cheered and jumped up and down, feeling a sense of pride for thinking of the plan. Neither Crystal, nor Joe noticed him though.
When the two finally separated, they had smiles on their faces. “Wow.” Crystal said dreamily and Joe chuckled.
“Yeah, I know.” He said back, looking into her eyes.
“Oh, by the way,” Crystal added with a grin, “You blinked.”
