The Sixteenth Wish
Chapter Eight: Nick’s Point of View
Just as I was beginning to think everything was going perfect, I was proved wrong.
“Nick!” I saw my mom waving to me and signaling me to come to her.
“Excuse me for one moment.” I said smiling at Selena, who was still dancing.
“Okay, come back soon!” She laughed as she spun around. I grinned as I walked through the crowd and of the dance floor. I finally made it to her side with a smile, and she returned it with a fake one.
“What’s wrong?” I asked when I noticed the expression on her face.
“Well, I don’t want to worry you, but Big Rob says that some people are trying to sneak in. Some how the fans found out and the paparazzi followed them here.” She explained. I sighed. Of course they had to do something like this. You might think that this would be no big deal, but it really is. Now I had to worry that someone would get in. Who knows what they would see. Me and Selena, Joe and Taylor, Kevin and those girls. And we wouldn’t be able to leave without security, and a lot of it. All I wanted is for one day where I didn’t have to worry about that stuff. Of course, that just couldn’t happen.
“Okay, well let me know if you hear anything else about it.” I said, trying to stay positive for my mom.
“Alright, will do.” She assured me with a soft smile.
I decided to try and forget about the little problem I was just informed about. I really didn’t need the stress today, but I guess stress is what I was going to get.
On my way back over to the dance floor, I noticed Cody and Nicole. The couple was seated on a bright green couch, holding hands and kissing every so often. I could definitely tell they really had something special.
“Someone looks jealous.” I heard a familiar voice say. A voice I wish I wasn’t hearing. I turned around and saw Miley looking at me with one eyebrow raised.
“No, I’m happy for them. They’re really good together, and I don’t like Nicole that way.” I replied, seriously.
“I don’t mean jealous of him, I mean jealous of them. Of what they have together.” She said, but I didn’t fully comprehend what she meant, “You want someone you can be like that with. You need someone you can be like that with.” She explained, getting closer to me and placing her hands on my arms. I stepped back a little, not knowing what to say or do. I really didn’t need her doing this right now. “You know, we could be like that.”
“Miley, no.” I moved back again, but not quick enough to escape a flash coming from behind me. I sighed and ignored it.
“What’s wrong, Nick?” She asked as if she were surprised.
“You know what’s wrong. Miley, I don’t want to be like that with you! And besides, I already have someone that I can be that way with!” I yelled at her and she just folded her arms as a smile made its way across her face.
“You just keep telling yourself that.” She smiled confidently and walked away. She’s got to be kidding me. I can’t take her anymore. She needs to get over herself and realize that I don’t like her.
I took a deep breath. I just need to calm down. On my way back over to Selena, again, I saw Joe and Alexis arguing once more. I didn’t even bother going over to see what it was about now. I just wanted to scream. To scream and forget about all these problems. Luckily, before I totally lost control of myself, I saw Ashley.
“Nick, what’s wrong?” She asked sounding really concerned. I guess it was obvious that I was upset.
“Everything, Ashley. It’s everything!” I exclaimed, losing my patience with the world.
“Can you be more specific?” She asked, trying to calm me down.
“Well first off, there’s the fans and paparazzi. They’re everywhere. I can never just have a normal day where I can go out in public without risking becoming deaf or without seeing myself on the internet later that day. They’re here, Ash. The paparazzi are here, and I think one of them is in here. Which leads me to my next problem. Miley just doesn’t know when to stop. We’re over. Done. Finished. I just plain don’t like her! But she doesn’t get that! She keeps trying to flirt with me and act like I want her. She was just hanging all over me and I swear someone took a picture of us. It’s going to end up in magazines and all over the place. Just like it always does. Everything is the same, my life is so predictable. Something always goes wrong and I can’t take it anymore. I want change, Ashley. I need change!” I closed my eyes and took a couple more deep breaths. Ashley hugged me, trying to comfort me. She was always good at that.
“Nick, it’s okay. Calm down, I hate to see you so upset.” She said quietly. I just shrugged my shoulders. “I know it’s hard, but you’re strong. Don’t let this bring you down and ruin your day. But you know what? If you want change, you can get change. You are in control of your life, so don’t let it ruin you. I promise you, that if you want it enough, you will get exactly what you wish for.” She finished with a look on her face, waiting for my response. I smiled faintly at her, which caused her to smile too.
“You always know what to say, don’t you?” I said with a smile and she chuckled, nodding her head. “Well, thanks, and I guess you’re right. It’s just hard. I get so stressed out sometimes, and I just can’t help but get like this.”
“I know, Nick. I know.” She said and put her hand on my shoulder to let me know she cared. She always did that, it was kind of her thing to do when I was upset.
Just then, I heard Kevin’s voice over the speakers and the music turned down so that it was barely audible.
“Hey everybody!” He shouted excitedly to the crowd. They responded with ‘hey’s and some cheers.
“You all having fun?” He asked and more cheers were heard.
“Alright. Well, I think it’s about time we sing happy birthday to a certain sixteen year old.” Kevin smiled and looked at me from the stage. “Come on up here, Nick.” People were cheering as I walked over to the stage and up the steps. I looked out into the crowd and waved and smiled at them. I saw my parents and Frankie, Selena, Demi, Catherine, Ali, Joe, Garbo, John Taylor, Jack, Cody, Nicole, Ashley, Alexis, Taylor, Rachelle, and a whole lot more of my guests.
“Big Rob, bring out the cake!” Kevin shouted towards the right side of the stage. I turned my head to see Big Rob pushing a cart out with a big rectangular cake on it. It read, ‘Happy 16th birthday Nick. May all your wishes come true.’ and there were sixteen colorful, lit candles. “You ready guys?” Kevin asked everyone and they all agreed, and began to sing.
Happy Birthday to you..
I looked around at everyone, then back at the cake. The candles were slowly dripping wax and the flames were dancing in the soft breeze.
Happy birthday to you…
I thought to myself about everything. About what Ashley said, about what Miley did, about Alexis and Joe, about Cody and Nicole, about Selena, about the fans and paparazzi, and about everything else in between. Most importantly, though, I thought about what I wanted.
Happy birthday dear Nick…
I closed my eyes. I wanted my life to be a little different. I wanted more variety. Everything is always so predictable. I hate everything always being the same. I want something, and that something is..
Happy birthday to you!
Change. I took a deep breath and blew the candles, trying my best to blow them all out. I silently made my wish, and hoped I had blown all the flames away. I heard cheering, and slowly opened my eyes. And guess what I didn’t see?
Fire.
