Chapter Deux:
“Joseph!” I yelled. I had to find him. There’s no telling what could happen with him being out on his own. The whole reason I was assigned to him was because the council had decided that: 1) there was no way we could take him into hiding to adjust, because of his celebrity status; 2) there was no way we could survive as a race if he were to leak out his “condition” and 3) my sister, my problem. “JOSEPH!”
“Why don’t you just use your super human speed? Or turn into a bat?” Finally. The brat had climbed up a tree in the nearby park.
“Don’t believe everything you read, Joseph. Now get down here. We still have some things to discuss.”
“I’ve become a vampire. End of discussion.” Was he really about to cry?
“No, not the end. You’re stuck with me. Council’s decision, not mine.” I said, staring up at him.
“Well, what if I don’t want you with me? I have body guards and security officers and…”
“Joseph, do you really think any of that will stop me?” I questioned.
“Is that a threat?”
“Not unless you push me.”
“Fine.” He jumped from the tree. “What am I supposed to tell everyone when they ask why you’re always with me?”
“That’s not my problem. You can tell them whatever you like. I just have to help you cope with what you’ve become.”
“Well, I can’t cope. This is just not happening. I will wake up in the morning and this will all be just a dream.” I pinched him. “Ow…what was that for?”
“Not a dream. Believe me; I’d rather be back in my flat in Paris.”
“You live in France?”
“Occasionally. When you’re as old as I am, you move a LOT. After a while, each place just gets boring.”
“How old are you?”
“Don’t you know you never ask a woman her age?”
“Yeah, but technically you’re not a human woman.” He said with a small smile. I sat down on the ground and leaned back against the tree. “You ok?”
“Sunlight makes me drowsy.”
“Will it affect me the same way?” He said, sitting down in front of me.
“It will. But you’re still a newbie. You still have human characteristics. You’ll have the same sleeping and eating schedule for a while.” I closed my eyes, trying desperately not to fall asleep. He was quiet for a few minutes, which startled me. He hadn’t shut up since he’d woken up. “What’s wrong?” I asked, opening my eyes.
“Why me?” He looked like a lost little kid, trying to figure out where his mommy had gone. I sighed, stupid Samar.
“I don’t know why, Joseph. My sister has been causing these problems for centuries. Ever since our parents were outed and killed. Maybe she just wants the attention. I can’t explain why she does these things. All I do know is that every time she screws up, I’m the one who has to step in and fix everything.”
“So, I’m immortal?”
“Unless you get staked in the heart, pretty much so.” I yawned. “Can we head back to the hotel?”
“Sure.” He sounded defeated. He stood and offered a hand out to me.
“Listen, Joseph.” I started, as he helped me to my feet. “I know it’s a lot to take in right now. But you’re not alone. I’m here to help. Any questions, any problems, I will do my best.”
“Ok.”
