Chapter 13...it's short, but it's introducing the whole trick-or-treating/party plan
“Ten more days!!!” Joe shouted, running around the bus.
“Chill, Joe. We all know Halloween is ten days away. You don’t have to shout.” Kevin said.
“Seriously, ten days???” I groaned. I hated this time of year. Joe came and sat down next to me in my bunk.
“Yeah. And we’re gonna go trick-or-treating this year. Last year, we went to that Disney party thing. But there was no candy.” He pouted.
“Trick-or-treating, Joseph? Are you sure you’re not twelve?” I sat up next to him and poked him in the side.
“Do you have a costume yet?” I stared at him in surprise.
“You can’t honestly expect me to have a costume. You can’t honestly expect me to actually participate in this inane holiday.”
“Inane…is that like insane?”
“In this case, that’s about right.” I shook my head. “Joe, I don’t like Halloween.”
“Well, I’m going. I’ve had my costume for weeks now. And Kevin and Nick have theirs. So you HAVE to come. We can go shopping today.” He looked so giddy I had to laugh.
“You’re a dork. I don’t need a costume, because I am too old to be going trick-or-treating, even IF I actually wanted to go.”
“You’re not going?” Nick asked. He and Kevin came over and sat down on the bunk across from Joe and me. “Nisha, you HAVE to come.” I rolled my eyes.
“No, I really don’t.”
“Yeah, you do, Nisha. If I am going, you’re definitely not too old to go trick-or-treating.” Kevin said, which made me laugh. I looked between all three boys and cringed. Yeah, I was outnumbered.
“Fine. I will go with you. Ugh. But I will go shopping for a costume by myself.”
