The Sixteenth Wish
Chapter Nineteen: Nick’s Point of View
We had been in the car for about three minutes when Kevin spoke up over the music playing quietly on the radio. It was Shattered by O.A.R.
“So, is Ashley coming tonight? She might want to catch a show before she goes back home.” Kevin asked me, keeping his eyes focused on the road.
“Are you serious?” I asked him as if he were kidding.
“Yeah, what’s wrong?” He replied sounding confused.
“Kevin, where have you been?” Joe asked him, crinkling his forehead when he talked.
“Right here, duh. What’s up with you guys?” Kevin stated, thinking that he was smarter than us and that we had some kind of problem.
“Dude, what’s up with you? You obviously missed the whole conversation about how Ashley and I are in a fight, even though you were sitting right there!” I shouted at him. He turned around to look at me for a second, but then brought his eyes back to the road.
“You’re in a fight with Ashley? I thought you were best friends?” Kevin questioned, shocked that it was true. Joe sighed and covered his face with his hand.
“Key word, were.” I told him with a serious tone. Kevin shook his head.
“Now both of you hate two nice girls. You guys have got to get some class and get over this silly stuff.” Kevin advised us with a chuckle. All I could wonder is what was going on in his head in the last hour. He obviously was paying little, to no attention to any of us.
“Dude, are you being serious?” Joe asked him, emphasizing the 'serious'.
“Yeah? What do you mean?” I noticed Kevin making a weird face in the rear-view mirror as he made a sharp right turn.
“I guess you missed the whole thing with me and Alexis.” Joe told him with an audible sigh.
“What thing?” Kevin asked as if he really didn’t care, but was trying to please Joe by asking it. He just kept his eyes focused on the road and his hands at ‘ten and two’ on the steering wheel.
“Oh, I don’t know. Maybe how we MADE OUT!” Joe yelled at Kevin. I saw his eyes widen in the mirror, and he hit the brakes. My body lurched forward in my seat and I nearly hit my head on the back of Joe’s headrest. Luckily, I had my seat belt on.
“Dude!” I exclaimed at my eldest brother. “You are so lucky no one was behind us!” Kevin ignored my comment.
“You made out with Alexis?” He asked, shocked.
“Yep, and you would’ve known that if you were paying attention and would stop messing with your phone all the time!” Joe said seriously. “Dude, who are you texting, like, a million times a day?”
“IDK my BFF Jill?” Kevin smirked.
“Kevin, seriously!” Joe demanded.
“I don’t know… dude I can’t believe you and Alexis! Jeez…” Kevin changed the subject as subtly as he could.
“Don’t change the subject!” Joe ordered him. I just shook my head at my oldest brother.
“Kevin, what are you trying to hide?” I asked him seriously, but not in any means angrily. I heard him sigh quietly and glance at me in the mirror above his head.
“I.. I can’t.” He stuttered, sounding like he had to force himself to say it.
“You can’t what?” Joe asked, not sounding as mad any more.
“I can’t tell you.”
