Chapter 2
“Hey, Joe. Can we talk?” He seemed startled by my sudden interest in him, but he followed me into my hotel room. He plopped down on the bed and stared at me. I chose to stand.
“What’s up?”
“Well, I’m just wondering how you’re doing.”
“I’m fine.” He snatched up the remote and turned the TV on. I stood in front of the television set. “Move. I can’t see the TV.”
“Joe…” I turned and switched off the set, and blocked it so he couldn’t turn it back on.
“I see Nisha’s gotten to you too. Look, I will tell you exactly what I tell her. I am ok. I am not upset or in denial or anything. If people keep bringing it up, yeah, I’m gonna get pissed. But if you guys just let me deal with it in my own way, I’ll be fine.” I sighed. Obviously I was getting nowhere with him.
“Fine. Sorry to waste your time.”
A few days later, we were all chilling in my hotel room. Kevin and I were playing Guitar Hero, Joe and Nisha were sitting on the bed behind us. It happened so suddenly, I really am not sure what exactly went down. But in an instant, Joe jumped up and walked into Kevin’s room…the one adjoining mine. Nisha dashed after him, and although she closed the door, Kevin and I could still hear the yelling, and the profanity coming out of Joe’s mouth. It wasn’t until after we heard Kevin’s door slam, and Nisha’s sobs, did Kevin and I finally move from our spots on the floor.
“Nisha?” I eased the door open, and there was Nisha, curled up in a ball on Kevin’s hotel room bed, bawling her eyes out. “Oh, Nisha.” I sat down next to her.
“I’m gonna kick my brother’s ass.” Kevin said, angrily. “He’s an idiot.”
“I know he didn’t mean what he said.” I said to Nisha, trying to calm her tears. “Kevin, you hang out here. I’ll go talk to Joe.” Nisha sat up.
“Oh, guys. Look, it’s just me. Maybe I should just um, leave.” She pleaded, wiping her eyes frantically. “Please don’t get yourselves in the middle of this. I don’t want to cause problems for anyone.”
“It’s no problem.” I assured her.
“Nick…”
“Hey, Nisha, why don’t you and I go play video games?” Kevin offered. She looked back and forth between the two of us, looking very confused. “Come on. Either Nick talks to him, or I go and beat him up. Your choice.”
“Fine.” She huffed, stood, and walked back to my room, Kevin right on her heel.
