The Sixteenth Wish
Chapter Twenty One: Nick’s Point of View
We finally pulled up to the place where the concert was being held. I was surprised, yet glad that we weren’t surrounded by girls yet. I guess we finally got some better security to keep them out. I was actually kind of afraid to talk to Kevin. I was really starting to believe that what Joe had said about him and Selena was true. Everything about it makes sense, except for why. Why would he do it?
“Well, here we are.” Kevin said, not turning back to look at Joe and I.
“Yes, we are here.” Joe said back awkwardly, sounding almost robotic. I stayed silent, fighting the urge to flip out on Kevin. I knew that if I did it would just mess things up even more.
“Okay…” Kevin said, more to himself than to us, and he opened his door to exit the vehicle. Joe glanced at me before doing the same thing. I followed after him, still worried about this whole mess Kevin created.
“Come on, boys.” Big Rob said as he walked up to us, cell phone in hand.
“Sup, Big Rob.” Joe smiled at our body guard.
“Not much J.” He replied with a grin. He then turned and looked at me. “You alright, Nick. You look nervous.” I glanced at Kevin, who was staring blankly at me, before answering him. I didn’t want to say anything to hint that it was because of Kevin.
“I’m good. Just a little shaken from today. Had a fight with Ash…” I told him, even though the fight was the last thing on my mind.
“That’s a shame. Tell me about it later, you gotta be backstage now.” Big Rob said back and directed us to where we needed to go. On the way there, Kevin and Big Rob started their own little conversation about who knows what. It seemed like they were trying to keep Joe and I from hearing it though, and they were doing a good job about it. Joe must have noticed me looking at them.
“Do you think Kevin’s telling him about Selena?” He whispered to me with a curious look on his face.
“I don’t know. Who said that the Selena thing was even true anyway?” I replied, also whispering.
“Well, who said it wasn’t true?” He shot back. I shook my head.
“It seems like you want Kevin to be with her, like you want him to be doing something bad.” I said back after thinking about it.
“It’s not that I want him to be a bad guy, it’s just that I think he did something that a bad guy would do.”
“Either way, I wish you wouldn’t have told me about it. Now I can’t help but see him as a jerk, and I don’t even know if he did anything wrong.” I told Joe, who just shrugged.
“You don’t know if he did anything wrong yet.” He reminded me. I rolled my eyes at him and kept walking. Joe and I were a few steps behind Big Rob and Kevin. I tried my best to make out what those two were talking about, but didn’t have much luck. All I heard was “…if they……the band……can’t……Garbo…” I figured it didn’t have anything to do with the secret Kevin was keeping from us, but I wasn’t sure.
“Hey guys.” John Taylor greeted us once we reached the end of our walk and were backstage.
“Hey man.” Joe replied and I just smiled at him.
“You guys better hurry and get ready. You don’t have that much time.” Big Rob warned us and walked off.
“Well, I guess I’m gonna go change.” Joe said and went to one of the dressing rooms. I was going to do the same thing, but I noticed Kevin talking to Garbo about something. I could tell by the looks on their faces and the quietness of their words that it was about the secret. It seems to me like the only ones that it’s a secret to are me and Joe.
“Nick, hey.” I turned around to see Joanna smiling at me.
“Oh, hey. I haven’t seen you for a while. How’s Garbo been treating you?” I smiled and she laughed slightly.
“Pretty good, could be worse.” She joked and glanced over at her boyfriend. I could tell by the look in her blue eyes that she really loved him.
Garbo walked over towards us, smiling at Joanna. Kevin followed him with a slightly worried look on his face.
“Hey, we were just talking about you.” Joanna smiled at Garbo as he gave her a hug and a quick kiss on the lips.
“I’m hoping that’s a good thing.” He smiled at her.
“It is.” She nodded and then I heard her whisper, “Now?” Garbo just nodded. They had obviously planned something.
“Hey, guys,” Garbo started, trying to get everyone’s attention. John, Jack, Kevin, me, and a few other people looked at him, giving him our full attention.
“Greg and I have something that we feel that you guys deserve to know.” Joanna announced. Garbo smiled at her, then continued to tell us whatever it was they were trying to say.
“I was going to wait at least till after the show to tell you guys, but I think we’ve been keeping it a secret too long.” He paused and looked at his girlfriend. I was curious as to what was going on. It looked to me like Kevin already knew. “Joanna and I are getting married…” He said with a smile, but it faded quickly, “And I’m quitting the band.” I was surprised at his announcement. I was happy that they were getting married, but disappointed that he was leaving the band. He’d been with us from the start and was practically like another brother to us, and was Kevin’s best friend.
Then it hit me. This was Kevin’s secret. I was overcome with guilt for ever thinking that Kevin would do something so terrible that he couldn’t even tell his own brothers. He was simply being a good friend and keeping a promise. How could I have been so stupid to actually believe that Joe of all people would be right about this?
“I told you guys you would find out eventually. I just didn’t want to be the one to tell you since I promised I wouldn’t tell anyone.” Kevin said to me and I nodded to let him know I understood.
Joe walked out of the dressing room as everyone was congratulating Garbo and Joanna.
“Yo, what’d I miss?” He asked with a confused look on his face. I smiled and rolled my eyes at him.
“Garbo and Joanna are engaged. That was what Kevin was keeping from us. He’s not with Selena.” I told him, a little too loud. Joe looked kind of surprised, and so did Kevin.
“Wait, what?” He asked about the Selena part. I wanted to hit myself for saying that.
“Oh, well you’re gonna laugh about this, bro… Nick, tell him” Joe said and looked at me.
“Well you see, Joe and I couldn’t think of what you’d be hiding from us so we considered everything as a possibility…” I started.
“And what about Selena?” Kevin asked, not fully understanding.
“Well, we thought that maybe you were secretly hooking up with Selena or something, I don’t know it’s not important.” I tried to get him to forget about it, but it didn’t seem like he was going to.
“Nick, you should know I would never do anything like that, especially after what she did to you. You’re my little brother, I would never do anything to hurt you like that.” Kevin said seriously.
“See, I told you. Kevin’s not a bad guy.” Joe cut in as if he were innocent.
“Joe, it was you who thought of it!” I exclaimed.
“You believed it!” He shot back. Kevin just shook his head.
“What’s going on over here?” Big Rob asked as he walked over, noticing our little feud.
“Just a minor problem.” Joe told him.
“Yeah, well it’s not the only one.” He said back. I was confused.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“We have a bigger problem.” Big Rob replied and motioned for us to follow him. Kevin, Joe, and I all looked at each other, silently asking what Big Rob was talking about. For the time being, we forgot about our argument.
“Big Rob, what’s the problem?” Kevin asked. Rob sighed as we walked out onto the stage.
“Show starts in three minutes…” He started and we realized what the problem was.
“No one’s here.”
