Chapter 23
“Listen, Nick…” I really didn’t want to talk to Nisha. I knew her intentions had been good, but the end result was that I was even more confused than before.
“Look, Nisha, thank you for trying. But I don’t really wanna talk right now.” I put my arm over my eyes, not bothering to move from lying on the couch. I heard a howling noise. “Elvis, knock it off.” I moved my arm and looked over at my dog. He was sitting on the floor next to me, head up, as if he’d just heard the same noise I had. “What the hell was that?” Obviously it hadn’t been Elvis, or it would have been much louder.
“I think you need to take Elvis for a walk.” I watched as Nisha glanced out the window. “Take him to the park down the street.”
“What for?” I moved my arm back over my eyes. Suddenly, I felt a heavy leash drop on my chest. I jumped at the surprise contact.
“Because you need to get your ass down to the park. Right now.” Her tone left no room for argument. I sat up and sighed.
“Come on, Elvis.” I attached the leash to his collar. We stepped out of the house, and I could see Nisha watching us through the front window. “Don’t see what was so important that we come out here.” I muttered to Elvis. “Although it’s a beautiful full moon tonight. Maybe that would explain everyone’s weird behavior.” After a few moments of walking, I started to turn back. Elvis was having none of that. He started pulling on the leash. “Elvis, come on. I wanna go home.” The leash slipped from my fingers and he took off towards the park. I hurried after him, and then stopped dead in my tracks when I saw a terrifying sight…a wolf. In a park. Near my house. And my dog was standing between the wolf and I, growling. “Elvis!!!”
The wolf howled, and immediately, Elvis dropped to the ground and rolled onto his back. Then the wolf approached me. I felt frozen. I knew I should run or something…anything, but I couldn’t move. I was afraid, and yet I wasn’t. Finally, the wolf was standing right in front of me. Those eyes…I’d recognize them ANYWHERE…
“Zee?” The wolf drew closer still and nudged my hand with its nose. “Oh my god. Zee!” This was my girlfriend’s BIG secret???
