Prologue
“Mom i..i.. i'm not lying!” little 8 year old Dahlia said to her mom in between sobs and hiccups. Her mom gave her a stern look that Dahlia knew all too well. She looked at the man standing next to her mom with an evil, drunken grin on his face. One look at him gave her this disgusting feeling at the pit of her stomach. How could her mom not believe her? Couldn't she see the malicious look in his eyes?! He was the devil in human form.
“Stop accusing him of all these crazy things Dahlia! He wouldn't do that to you ... he lo- loves you.” her mother,Melanie, said with much resistance. Even Dahlia knew she was trying hard to convince herself that those words were true. How many times had David beat her up? Little Dahlia had lost count, after two years of h.ell she had began to grow numb. At first sure he seemed great. Dahlia was willing to let another man into her life to try and fill the void that was left. Her father, her real father lost the battle with cancer right before her 5th birthday.
A couple of months into Melanie's and David's relationship he began to show his true colors and became the monster he is known as today. After awhile he stopped using excuses, like that he was drunk or just upset ... he came in and beat Dahlia and Melanie for the h.ell of it. His eyes showed satisfaction every time they coward in fear or pain. Lately, however, his pleasure came from sneaking into Dahlia's room and having his way with her. And that was what she had just finished telling her mother, who to blind to see the truth, was taking his side.
“You even know that isn't true!” Dahlia screamed at her mother, as her mother winced at the sudden outburst.
Before she knew what hit her, Dahlia felt a sharp pain on her cheek and a loud slapping sound. He hit her.
“Shut up you twit! Your a liar! You should be happy I'm still around to keep you and your mother alive! I'm the only person you have, no one else wants you two and no one ever will! Your father is lucky to be dead, at least he doesn't have to deal with your s.hit” he spat, slurring every other word.
Dahlia ran to her room at full speed, letting her tears fall off of her delicate, young face. The run to her room was blurry due to the tears but when she made it in, she locked her door and dove on to her bed, burying her face into the pillow, sobbing, punching and kicking. Her fight with the pillow soon came to an end and her fragile body became heavy as sleep took over. Exhausted she closed her beautiful eyes and fell asleep.
All to soon, she felt someone shaking her. She tensed up and closed her eyes tight, but she loosened her grip when the angelic sound of her mom's voice hit her ears.
“It's me sweetie, wake up, please” her mom pleaded, sounding close to tears. Dahlia look up at her mother, who seemed to have a new bruise on her face. Dahlia, crying, hugged her mom tight, as did her mother.
“Shh, sweetie don't cry! Everything is going to be fine but you're going to have to listen to me.” Melanie whispered. Melanie knew all along of David's horrible deeds and it was time to put a stop to it. Putting up a front, however, was the only way to guarantee survival.
“Okay mom, what's the matter?” Dahlia's innocent voice chimed.
“Your leaving sweetie, leaving this house. I've arranged a one way ticket to your Aunt Lucile's place in Florida.”
Dahlia's eyes started to shine bright with happiness and all her mother could do was smile.
“We're finally leaving, we're finally leaving him!” Her mother's smile fell.
“Dahlia baby, I have to stay. Things are already planned out, I'll follow you ... I promise.”
Dahlia could resist but she wouldn't, she had to be mature. She had to be strong for her mom.
“Okay, mom. I Love You.”
“I Love You Too” her mother choked out while hugging her precious daughter.
