Chapter 5
“Kevin…” Michaela said as she ran her hand up and down my arm.
Her touch made my whole body tingle.
“Kevin, what are you smiling about?” she asked me, making me grin even wider.
“Kevin… Kevin…”
“Kevin… Kevin… Kevin! Dude! Wake up!” I groaned as I felt a pillow being slapped on to my face.
“Ugh” I groaned as I got the pillow and fluffed it under my head, pulling the covers on top of my head.
“Kevin, seriously, mom said it’s time to get up. You already missed breakfast!”
I heard the voice that ruined my dream speak again.
The annoying voice was then accompanied by an annoying hand that pulled the sheets away from my body.
“Fine” I mumbled as I sleepily got out of bed.
“Mom, he’s up! Finally!” the voice then yelled.
I groggily opened my eyes and that’s when it registered that the annoying voice belonged to my annoying brother Joe, who surprisingly woke up before I did.
“So…” Joe started to speak as he sat on my bed while I was trying to fix it, “Looks like you had an interesting dream” he smirked at me as I pushed him off the bed, fluffing my pillows and fixing the sheets.
I mumbled something incoherent as I finished making my bed.
“Seriously Kevin, it seemed like a good dream, you were actually smiling” he said as he then pinched both sides of my mouth to form a smile.
“Hey, stop that!” I said as I pushed his hands away.
“You’d think that after such a wonderful dream – which I want to hear the details to – unless it’s only for mature audiences –“ he chuckled, “- you’d actually be in a good mood”
Was I really smiling? But I was dreaming of Michaela, not Ava…
“Now’s not exactly the time to space out on me, Kevin, I’m waiting” Joe chuckled as he sat down again, making creases on the bed I had just finished fixing.
Could I really tell him about my dream or would Joe just find it really weird?
Joe was about to say something again when we heard Frankie yell from downstairs, “Joe! Anne’s here!”
I let out a sigh of relief, knowing that Joe would rather see his girlfriend than talk to me about some dream.
I watched as Joe’s face suddenly lit up and he dashed downstairs, yelling a “we’ll talk later”, leaving me in the comfort of my own room to think about the dream I just had.
After taking a shower and getting dressed, I got downstairs surprised to see more than six people in the house.
“Kevin!” Stef, Nick’s girlfriend, called out as I walked into the living room. She bolted out of Nick’s grasp from her and ran up to hug me. So did Anne, leaving both of my brothers with smirks on their faces.
“Haha, ok, I missed you both too” I chuckled.
“You know we’re only letting it pass because you’re our brother, right?” Nick joked as she reached for Stef’s arm and pulled her to cuddle with him again, making his girlfriend giggle.
“Yeah, don’t get used to it” Joe added as Anne sat beside him and he wrapped his arm protectively around her.
The girls and I all laughed as I sat down beside Frankie on the couch, ruffling his hair. He smiled at me as he took my hand and placed it on the side of his shoulder as we got back to watching Bruce Almighty.
About halfway through the movie, dad called us for lunch already. We all settled in our seats before saying grace. It was fun having Stef and Anne over because they really got along well with the entire family. My brothers were really lucky to have them as girlfriends, because they totally support our careers but make sure that my brothers don’t let it get to their heads. It makes me kind of wish that Ava were here with us, though. As I twirled spaghetti on my fork, trying to listen to Stef’s story, I found myself thinking of how Ava, Stef, Anne, Joe, Nick and I would just spend our days before.
“Oh my goodness! What on earth happened to you?!” Mom freaked out as Nick, Stef, Joe, Anne, Aves and I filed into the kitchen, all covered up in mud.
“Well Mrs. J, someone thought that it would be cool to push his brother into a puddle of mud while we were at the park” Aves said giggling as six pairs of eyes, including my mom’s, turned towards Joe.
“Hey! Not my fault that… NickpulledStefwithhim!OrthatStefpulledAnneandAnnepulledyouandyoupulledKevin!” Joe spoke very quickly, trying to sound so confident so that we wouldn’t respond to it. He learned somewhere that the faster you talk, the less questions people can ask, and was obviously using it on us.
“Aaaaand… Mom… They all ganged up on me!!! Mommy!” Joe tried to pout as he inched closer to his mother, opening his arms to hug her.
“Oh no you don’t Joseph” she laughed as she took a step back from her son. “Haha now please, all of you, freshen up. Boys, lend the girls some shorts and shirts. Girls, you can use the bathroom in the guest room”
“Thank you” the girls said at the same time as mom got back to her chopping, stopping a bit to chuckle as she looked at us again, shaking her head.
“Here you go” I handed Ava a pair of shorts and a shirt.
“Thanks” she smiled at me.
“Oh wait, here, you can use this too” I said, handing her a sweater. I knew she gets cold easily.
She took a sniff of the sweater, “Kev, is this used?!” she laughed.
“I was supposed to wear it today, but decided against it. It’s clean!” I chuckled.
“It smells like… YOU!” she complained, trying to make a disgusted look.
“Oh shut up, I know you like it anyway” I teased.
“Suuuuure” she rolled her eyes and laughed as she walked out of my room, carrying the clothes I gave her.
“Just so you know Kev, I’m keeping this” she yelled out, making me chuckle as I got clothes for myself and headed for my bathroom.
“Kevin? Are you all right son?” my dad asked as he put a hand on my wrist.
“Oh… Sorry. I was just thinking…” I sighed. “Um, may I be excused?” I asked, looking at both my parents.
“Well, okay” mom said giving me a worried look.
I shot her a smile as if to assure her that I was okay. I thanked them and excused myself from everyone. I could feel their eyes on my back as I left the room and headed for my room.
As I got inside my room, I grabbed my guitar and played the song that Aves and I used to sing a lot together…
(Ava)
What would think if I sang out of tune,
Would you stand up and walk out on me.
Lend me your ears and I'll sing you a song,
And I'll try not to sing out of key.
(Ava and Kevin)
Oh I get by with a little help from my friends,
I get high with a little help from my friends,
Oh I'm gonna try with a little help from my friends.
(Kevin)
What do I do when my love is away.
(Does it worry you to be alone)
How do I feel by the end of the day
(Are you sad because you're on your own)
No, I get by with a little help from my friends,
Mmm I get high with a little help from my friends,
Mmm I'm gonna to try with a little help from my friends
(Ava)
Do you need anybody?
(Kevin)
I need somebody to love.
(Ava)
Could it be anybody?
(Kevin)
I want somebody to love.
(Kevin)
Would you believe in a love at first sight?
(Ava)
Yes I'm certain that it happens all the time.
What do you see when you turn out the light?
(Kevin)
I can't tell you, but I know it's mine.
(Ava and Kevin)
Oh I get by with a little help from my friends,
Mmm I get high with a little help from my friends,
Oh I'm gonna try with a little help from my friends
(Ava)
Do you need anybody?
(Kevin)
I need somebody to love.
(Ava)
Could it be anybody?
(Kevin)
I want somebody to love.
(Ava and Kevin)
Oh...
I get by with a little help from my friends,
I'm gonna try with a little help from my friends
I get high with a little help from my friends
Yes I get by with a little help from my friends,
With a little help from my friends
As I wiped a tear from my eye after strumming the last chord, I heard a gentle knock on the door as I saw Anne standing by the doorway.
“Oh, I didn’t know you were there” I said as I placed the guitar back on its stand and asked her to come in.
“Sorry, I had a feeling you were thinking about her” she said as she sat on my bed. She then reached for the picture of me and Aves on the night table.
“I just miss her so much” I admitted.
“I do too, Kev. It’s hard, but I know she’d rather see us move on with our lives. It’s not like we’re forgetting her, but you know her Kev, she’d rather we focus on the present and the future than keep on thinking about the past” Anne said as she placed the picture frame back on the desk and gave me a reassuring smile.
Anne was right, Ava always saw the good things in life, and she was always very positive.
“By the way Kevin, I saw the flowers you brought her, I’m sure my sister loved them” she said as she gave me a hug.
“Oh hey, am I interrupting something?” Stef asked softly as she went inside my room.
“No, no… We were just remembering Aves” Anne smiled at her.
“I miss her” Stef said as she looked outside the window.
“Yeah, us too” I told her.
We all stayed silent for a few minutes until Stef spoke up, taking a deep breath before she spoke.
“Hey, so Nick and I are going to watch an open mic acoustic show tonight… You guys want to go with us?”
“That sounds like fun. I’m sure Joe would like that too” Anne smiled.
“Haha yeah, but since it’s open mic, make sure he doesn’t try to do his stand-up comedy act” Stef giggled making all of us laugh.
“What about you Kev, you joining us?” Stef turned to me.
“I… I don’t know… I mean, I don’t want to be a fifth wheel” I told them.
Suddenly, Anne’s face lit up, “maybe you don’t have to be!” she blurted out.
Uh oh, this doesn’t sound good.
“Kevin, I know this really nice girl. I’m sure you’ll like her. You don’t have to ask her out or anything, just be friends with her, you know? I promise you, she’s great” Anne said.
I looked at Stef as I bit my lip, hoping she would tell Anne that it might not be a good idea.
“I think it’s a good idea!” Stef said, smiling widely.
Traitor.
“Great! I’ll call her now!” Anne said excitedly.
“And I’ll go tell the boys!” Stef said with as much excitement as Anne.
The two girls then gave me a hug before they headed downstairs.
I sighed as I closed the door behind them, knowing that there’s no way I can back out of it.
Well, tonight can only either go really well or really bad… I hope it’s the first one.
