So two of my threads for this fic froze, and I'm hoping that this is the last one that I have to make. Hope to get my readers back. I'll be uploading the chapters tonight. =)

Take My Breath Away

Prologue

“Hi Aves. It’s Kevin. I got you flowers, pink daffodils, your favorite... I’m sorry it took me a while to visit you. Yeah, I’m finally back after 10 months. It was unbelievable. Who would’ve thought that my brothers and I would finally be living our dream? THE dream! I can’t believe how many fans we have. It’s crazy! Though I’m sure Nick and Joe have more fans than me haha. But you’ll always be my number one fan, right? … Hey… I thought about you a lot during the tour, and there were times when I wish I could just pick up the phone and talk to you… I really miss you. You’re the only one who really gets me, you know? I miss how you always knew how to cheer me up… Whenever I’m having a bad day, you’d just bring out a bag of oreos and we’d share a glass of milk and somehow you manage to get me to talk. Sure, I still get to eat oreos and milk, but it’s not the same if I’m not sharing it with you. I really miss you… Why’d you have to be so far away Aves? I really really miss you”

I sighed, knowing that despite how many stories I shared or how many times I would tell her that I miss her, she wouldn’t respond.

I sat down beside her and laid the flowers between us. I closed my eyes and felt the cool breeze brushing against my face as I wiped the tears that were slowly trickling down my cheeks.

“I miss you” I said again as I ran my hand along the marble block.

Chapter 1

“Hey bro, where’ve you been?” my younger brother, Nick, asked as I got inside our house.

“Oh, I visited Ava” I said as I removed my scarf and coat and hung it in the closet.

“Oh” he nodded sympathetically, “you alright?”

I nodded and shot him a fake smile. I hope he didn’t see right through me though.

“Well, okay. Joe and Frankie are playing Guitar Hero in the living room, if you want to join in”

“Maybe later. Thanks bro” I said as he nodded and walked to the living room while I made my way to the kitchen.

Mom was in the kitchen busy making dinner. By the looks of it, we were having pork chops and tossed salad.

“Hi mom. Looks good” I said as I kissed her on the cheek.

“Thanks K2” she said as she placed one hand on my shoulder. “How was it?”

“Well, it’s not like anything could change mom…” I said without thinking, not even realizing that I sounded sarcastic. “Sorry” I quickly followed up.

“Don’t worry about it” she said, smiling at me.

“I brought her flowers” I told her as I helped her slice the tomatoes.

“Let me guess… Pink daffodils” my mom said as she got the sliced tomatoes and placed it on a bowl.

“Yeah” I gave a faint smile, knowing that I wasn’t the only one who loved Ava, even my mom did.

“I’m sure she loved them” my mom assured me as we finished preparing the salad and placed everything on the table.

“Boys, dinner!” she yelled. And in less than 30 seconds, all the other Jonas boys, including dad, came rushing into the dining table.

Dinner, of course, was scrumptious. Mom always did wonders in the kitchen, and I’m sure that she missed cooking in a real kitchen, her kitchen at that. It was actually relaxing to be having dinner in our own home and not in some hotel or tour bus.

Home sweet home. At least for the next few weeks.

But Wyckoff sure isn’t home without Ava around…

Chapter 2

I was on kitchen duty tonight, so after cleaning all the dishes, I went upstairs to my room. As I was about to turn the knob, I was half expecting to see Ava either jumping on my bed while music blasted from the speakers or her trying to play a song on my guitar, which she usually messed up anyway so I end up playing the song for her while she sang. And when she sang? Wow, I don’t even know how to describe it. Whenever she would sing, I could feel my breath getting stuck for a moment and her voice would envelope me. She truly had the voice of an angel.

I shook my head as I turned the knob, my heart dropping to my stomach as I opened the door to a dark room. No Ava jumping on my bed, playing my guitar, or singing. I flicked on the light switch and just plopped myself on the bed, not even bothering to change into my pajamas or even pulling the covers. I caught myself staring at the ceiling for quite a while and as I turned my head, there, beside my bed, was a picture of me and Ava at the beach three years ago. Just one random day when we decided to grab our bikes and pedal like crazy just because she wanted to watch the sun set.

*flashback*

Ava and I were sitting on the sand, watching the sunset.

“Kev?”

“Yeah Aves?”

“Do you believe in heaven?” she suddenly asked.

I was surprised by her question, “yeah, I do. Why do you ask?”

“No reason” she said as she rested her head on my shoulder.

I shrugged.

We were silent for a while, just taking in the beauty of the setting sun as it turned the sky into various shades of orange and purple.

“When I die, do you think I’ll go to heaven?” she asked, breaking the silence.

What was it with her and heaven all of a sudden?

“Of course. They’d be pretty crazy not to let you in there” I chuckled.

“Good” she giggled.

Before I could ask her why all those thoughts about heaven, she posed another question.

“Say I were to… die earlier than you. Would you miss me?”

“Aves, what’s with all these questions?”

“Just humor me Kevin” she nudged me with her elbow.

“Okay… Yes, I will miss you. Of course I’ll miss you! Ava Nicole Morgan, you’re my best friend, I don’t think I’ll be able to live a day without you. When you die, I’ll probably go right after you” I laughed.

“Not funny Kevin” she said, looking at me. And that’s when I noticed the tears forming in her eyes.

“Hey, what’s wrong?” I asked as I suddenly became worried.

“It’s nothing. Hormones, I guess” she let out a soft laugh as she wiped the tears from her eyes.

I sighed. I knew better than to not pester her when she mentioned the words hormones, PMS or cramps.

“Kevin, promise me you won’t go right after me when I die” she said in a serious tone.

I was still wondering why she was so engrossed with talking about dying.

“I was just kidding about that. But I will miss you, that’s for sure. Now c’mon Aves, we’re only16 and 18! We still have about 70 years ahead of us” I laughed again as I ran my hand up and down her arm.

She looked at me and smiled, “I know. I’ll stop talking about it now. But after you promise me another thing”

“Okay, whatever it is, I promise. Well, as long as it doesn’t involve me doing your chores for you” I stuck my tongue out at her making her giggle.

“When I die, it’s okay to be sad, but only for a while, I don’t want you to be miserable. No moping around being sappy and all just because you miss me.. And I’ll be okay if you find someone else to share your oreos with” she laughed.

“Okay Aves, I promise. Not miserable. Not sappy I repeated making her smile even more. “I don’t know about the oreos though” I let out a small laugh.

She laughed softly, “Thanks Kevin” she whispered as she rested her head on my shoulder again.

I squeezed her arm lightly and didn’t say anything.

“Take our picture Kev. So when I die you can have this picture right beside your bed” she joked as she handed me her camera..

“Why would I want a picture of you beside my bed? I’m saving that for my girlfriend” I teased.

She then punched me lightly on the stomach, “just do it” she laughed.

*end of flashback*

If only I knew that my best friend was trying to tell me something important that day. If only I knew that about a year after that, my best friend would be taken away from me… by cancer.

“Aveees” I found myself in tears again as I called out her name, “I miss you so much” I said as I grabbed the picture from my night stand and stared at it.

I could just picture her now punching me on the stomach again and saying, Didn’t I tell you not to be miserable and sappy?

I groaned. As always, Ava was right.

I placed the picture back on the table and stood from my bed. I walked downstairs and got my coat from the closet.

“Mom, dad… I’m going for a walk” I yelled as I closed the front door behind me, just wanting to clear my mind and escape from this depressed state I was in.

Chapter 3

I buttoned up my coat as I started to walk along the sidewalk. It was pretty dark outside and thankfully no one seemed to be following me. I then noticed a girl walking along the sidewalk too, carrying a bunch of books. Her blonde hair was in a half pony tail and she was wearing brown rectangular glasses and she seemed to be humming to herself as she was walking. Truth be told, she reminded me so much of Ava that I just had to take a closer look.

My eyes were glued on to her as I continued walking, not realizing a crack on the sidewalk which made me tumble.

Great!

“Oh my, are you okay?” as the girl I was staring at quickly ran up to me and reached her hand out to help me up.

“Ava?” I whispered absent-mindedly.

“Um, it’s Michaela actually” she said as she helped me up.

“Sorry”

“It’s okay” she gave me another sweet smile. I took a good look at her and realized that her eyes were green…. Not hazel.

She wasn’t Ava, but somehow part of me didn’t mind. I still couldn’t take my eyes off of her.

“Thank you” I said.

“Don’t mention it…” her voice trailed as she waited for me to fill in my name.

“Kevin” I said.

“Kevin” she repeated with a nod. But somehow such a common name like mine sounded utterly extraordinary when she said it.

“Kevin” she said again. “Kevin Jonas, right?”

Was she a fan?

“Sorry, but I’m not a stalker fan or anything” she laughed. It was music to my ears.

“My kids are” she said.

Her kids? Wasn’t she a little too young to have.. kids?

She must’ve noticed the look on my face, “Oh! No! It’s not what you think. I’m a teacher. And my kids, um, my students, I mean… Well, they just love listening and dancing to your music” she explained.

“Oh!” was all that I could say as I continued gazing at her.

“Um… Yeah… Uh, I guess I better go. Nice meeting you” she said as she adjusted her bag on her shoulder and waved.

“Um yeah, you too” I said as she nodded at me and I watched her walk away.

I was watching her walk away.

Why was I just watching her walk away?

“Wait!” a yell escaped from my lips before I could even think about it.

She turned around and looked at me again, the gentle wind blowing some of her hair across her face. I watched as her hand moved gently across her forehead and tucked the hair behind her ears. She looked at me, waiting for me to say something.

“I… I… Uh” I tried to say something as I looked at her.

“I’m sorry, but I really have to go” she said, biting her bottom lip.

I nodded, not being able to say anything coherent as she shrugged and walked away, again.

“Are you from the neighborhood? Maybe I’ll see you around” she said out loud as I saw her looking at me again.

“Yeah” I smiled at her and nodded. “I sure hope so” I whispered to myself as I watched her walk away, her head bopping as she seemed to be humming to herself again.

I don’t know what it was with Michaela, but something about her made me feel so at ease…

I walked home with a genuine smile on my face, hoping that I do in fact see her around… soon.

Chapter 4

“Oh Kevin! You’re such a scaredy cat! Live a little!” she giggled as she threw a handful of sand into my chest and ran away from me. She was insisting that we jump off the huge rock into the water, just like what the other kids were doing.

“Oh you did not just do that!” I chuckled as I quickly stood up and ran after her.

She tried to dodge me as I ran after her along the shore, but soon enough I grabbed her waist and lifted her over my shoulder.

“Paul Kevin Jonas II, put me down!” she yelled, still laughing.

“Ow!”

She bit my arm!

“Eww, that’s just gross Aves!” I said as I finally put her down on the sand again.

“Ha! I knew that would make you put me down!” she said proudly. “But eww, sunscreen” she made a disgusted face as she wiped her mouth.

I chuckled as I messed her hair up with my hand.

“Come on Kev, please please please, let’s try it! It seems like so much fun!” she said, putting her hands together, pleading.

“Aves, I said no. We’re not going to jump from some rock. What if our heads smash into some rock or something?” I told her.

“We won’t! It’s perfectly safe! Look at them!” she said, pointing out to the group of boys jumping from the rock.

“Please Kev. For me?” she said, giving me a puppy dog look.

“No” I said sternly.

“We can do it together” she tried to convince me even more.

“No Ava” I said again, crossing my arms across my chest.

“Please please please please please!” she whined as she knelt down in front of me and continued to plead, causing people who were walking past us to stare.

“Ava, get up!” I said as I pulled her arm and made her stand up again.

“Kevin, I really want to do this” she told me seriously, “I want to live my life to the fullest before…”

“Don’t say it” I told her as my heart dropped. I knew what she was going to say.

“Ugh, fine” I finally gave in.

“Thank you!” she said as she leaped into my arms and hugged me.

“We’ll do it together. Think of it as a leap of faith” she smiled at me.

That was Ava Nicole Morgan for you, always so philosophical and  positive about everything. She was always the one who pushed me to try different things and take risks.

“Are you ready?” she asked as we finally got to the top of the rock. It was about 20 meters high. I gulped as I looked down at the water.

“I… Uh…” I stuttered. I didn’t really want to do it.

“Kevin, there’s more to life than just to live!” she tried to convince me again.

“I don’t know Aves…”

“Fine, have it your way. I’ll see you later” she said as she quickly jumped.

“Ava!!!”

All of a sudden, everyone else was gone. I just stood there as I watched my best friend take a leap from a 20m high rock into the water. I just watched her!

I saw the water splash but panicked when it took her a while to head up.

“Ava!!!” I yelled again.

“Kevin! I’m okay!” she yelled, giving me thumbs up as she finally swam up.

I let out a huge sigh of relief when I saw her.

“Go! Jump!” she yelled. “I’ll be here don’t worry!”

I had no other choice. I took a deep breath and jumped. I closed my eyes as I felt the salty breeze pushing against my body as I took that leap.

Soon enough I felt the cold water around me and I saw myself surrounded by water.

I saw Ava’s feet dangling from above me as I swam up.

When I got up I was blinded by the bright sun shining on us.

“See! That was fun!” she giggled as she wrapped her arms around me neck as she came from behind me.

I just let out a small laugh as I tried to swim us into shore, her still on my back.

When the water was finally shallow enough that we could stand, she let go of my neck.

“That leap was worth it, wasn’t it?” she asked

“Yeah” I finally admitted..

I turned around to face her.

Only to realize that it wasn’t Ava...

It was Michaela.

Chapter 5

“Kevin…” Michaela said as she ran her hand up and down my arm.

Her touch made my whole body tingle.

“Kevin, what are you smiling about?” she asked me, making me grin even wider.

“Kevin… Kevin…”

“Kevin… Kevin… Kevin! Dude! Wake up!” I groaned as I felt a pillow being slapped on to my face.

“Ugh” I groaned as I got the pillow and fluffed it under my head, pulling the covers on top of my head.

“Kevin, seriously, mom said it’s time to get up. You already missed breakfast!”

I heard the voice that ruined my dream speak again.

The annoying voice was then accompanied by an annoying hand that pulled the sheets away from my body.

“Fine” I mumbled as I sleepily got out of bed.

“Mom, he’s up! Finally!” the voice then yelled.

I groggily opened my eyes and that’s when it registered that the annoying voice belonged to my annoying brother Joe, who surprisingly woke up before I did.

“So…” Joe started to speak as he sat on my bed while I was trying to fix it, “Looks like you had an interesting dream” he smirked at me as I pushed him off the bed, fluffing my pillows and fixing the sheets.

I mumbled something incoherent as I finished making my bed.

“Seriously Kevin, it seemed like a good dream, you were actually smiling” he said as he then pinched both sides of my mouth to form a smile.

“Hey, stop that!” I said as I pushed his hands away.

“You’d think that after such a wonderful dream – which I want to hear the details to – unless it’s only for mature audiences –“ he chuckled, “- you’d actually be in a good mood”

Was I really smiling? But I was dreaming of Michaela, not Ava…

“Now’s not exactly the time to space out on me, Kevin, I’m waiting” Joe chuckled as he sat down again, making creases on the bed I had just finished fixing.

Could I really tell him about my dream or would Joe just find it really weird?

Joe was about to say something again when we heard Frankie yell from downstairs, “Joe! Anne’s here!”

I let out a sigh of relief, knowing that Joe would rather see his girlfriend than talk to me about some dream.

I watched as Joe’s face suddenly lit up and he dashed downstairs, yelling a “we’ll talk later”, leaving me in the comfort of my own room to think about the dream I just had.

After taking a shower and getting dressed, I got downstairs surprised to see more than six people in the house.

“Kevin!” Stef, Nick’s girlfriend, called out as I walked into the living room. She bolted out of Nick’s grasp from her and ran up to hug me. So did Anne, leaving both of my brothers with smirks on their faces.

“Haha, ok, I missed you both too” I chuckled.

“You know we’re only letting it pass because you’re our brother, right?” Nick joked as she reached for Stef’s arm and pulled her to cuddle with him again, making his girlfriend giggle.

“Yeah, don’t get used to it” Joe added as Anne sat beside him and he wrapped his arm protectively around her.

The girls and I all laughed as I sat down beside Frankie on the couch, ruffling his hair. He smiled at me as he took my hand and placed it on the side of his shoulder as we got back to watching Bruce Almighty.

About halfway through the movie, dad called us for lunch already. We all settled in our seats before saying grace. It was fun having Stef and Anne over because they really got along well with the entire family. My brothers were really lucky to have them as girlfriends, because they totally support our careers but make sure that my brothers don’t let it get to their heads. It makes me kind of wish that Ava were here with us, though. As I twirled spaghetti on my fork, trying to listen to Stef’s story, I found myself thinking of how Ava, Stef, Anne, Joe, Nick and I would just spend our days before.

“Oh my goodness! What on earth happened to you?!” Mom freaked out as Nick, Stef, Joe, Anne, Aves and I filed into the kitchen, all covered up in mud.

“Well Mrs. J, someone thought that it would be cool to push his brother into a puddle of mud while we were at the park” Aves said giggling as six pairs of eyes, including my mom’s, turned towards Joe.

“Hey! Not my fault that… NickpulledStefwithhim!OrthatStefpulledAnneandAnnepulledyouandyoupulledKevin!” Joe spoke very quickly, trying to sound so confident so that we wouldn’t respond to it. He learned somewhere that the faster you talk, the less questions people can ask, and was obviously using it on us.

“Aaaaand… Mom… They all ganged up on me!!! Mommy!” Joe tried to pout as he inched closer to his mother, opening his arms to hug her.

“Oh no you don’t Joseph” she laughed as she took a step back from her son. “Haha now please, all of you, freshen up. Boys, lend the girls some shorts and shirts. Girls, you can use the bathroom in the guest room”

“Thank you” the girls said at the same time as mom got back to her chopping, stopping a bit to chuckle as she looked at us again, shaking her head.

“Here you go” I handed Ava a pair of shorts and a shirt.

“Thanks” she smiled at me.

“Oh wait, here, you can use this too” I said, handing her a sweater. I knew she gets cold easily.

She took a sniff of the sweater, “Kev, is this used?!” she laughed.

“I was supposed to wear it today, but decided against it. It’s clean!” I chuckled.

“It smells like… YOU!” she complained, trying to make a disgusted look.

“Oh shut up, I know you like it anyway” I teased.

“Suuuuure” she rolled her eyes and laughed as she walked out of my room, carrying the clothes I gave her.

“Just so you know Kev, I’m keeping this” she yelled out, making me chuckle as I got clothes for myself and headed for my bathroom.

“Kevin? Are you all right son?” my dad asked as he put a hand on my wrist.

“Oh… Sorry. I was just thinking…” I sighed. “Um, may I be excused?” I asked, looking at both my parents.

“Well, okay” mom said giving me a worried look.

I shot her a smile as if to assure her that I was okay. I thanked them and excused myself from everyone. I could feel their eyes on my back as I left the room and headed for my room.

As I got inside my room, I grabbed my guitar and played the song that Aves and I used to sing a lot together…

(Ava)

What would think if I sang out of tune,
Would you stand up and walk out on me.
Lend me your ears and I'll sing you a song,
And I'll try not to sing out of key.
(Ava and Kevin)

Oh I get by with a little help from my friends,
I get high with a little help from my friends,
Oh I'm gonna try with a little help from my friends.

(Kevin)

What do I do when my love is away.
(Does it worry you to be alone)
How do I feel by the end of the day
(Are you sad because you're on your own)
No, I get by with a little help from my friends,
Mmm I get high with a little help from my friends,
Mmm I'm gonna to try with a little help from my friends

(Ava)

Do you need anybody?
(Kevin)

I need somebody to love.
(Ava)

Could it be anybody?
(Kevin)

I want somebody to love.

(Kevin)

Would you believe in a love at first sight?
(Ava)

Yes I'm certain that it happens all the time.
What do you see when you turn out the light?
(Kevin)

I can't tell you, but I know it's mine.
(Ava and Kevin)

Oh I get by with a little help from my friends,
Mmm I get high with a little help from my friends,
Oh I'm gonna try with a little help from my friends

(Ava)

Do you need anybody?
(Kevin)

I need somebody to love.
(Ava)

Could it be anybody?
(Kevin)

I want somebody to love.

(Ava and Kevin)

Oh...
I get by with a little help from my friends,
I'm gonna try with a little help from my friends
I get high with a little help from my friends
Yes I get by with a little help from my friends,
With a little help from my friends

As I wiped a tear from my eye after strumming the last chord, I heard a gentle knock on the door as I saw Anne standing by the doorway.

“Oh, I didn’t know you were there” I said as I placed the guitar back on its stand and asked her to come in.

“Sorry, I had a feeling you were thinking about her” she said as she sat on my bed. She then reached for the picture of me and Aves on the night table.

“I just miss her so much” I admitted.

“I do too, Kev. It’s hard, but I know she’d rather see us move on with our lives. It’s not like we’re forgetting her, but you know her Kev, she’d rather we focus on the present and the future than keep on thinking about the past” Anne said as she placed the picture frame back on the desk and gave me a reassuring smile.

Anne was right, Ava always saw the good things in life, and she was always very positive.

“By the way Kevin, I saw the flowers you brought her, I’m sure my sister loved them” she said as she gave me a hug.

“Oh hey, am I interrupting something?” Stef asked softly as she went inside my room.

“No, no… We were just remembering Aves” Anne smiled at her.

“I miss her” Stef said as she looked outside the window.

“Yeah, us too” I told her.

We all stayed silent for a few minutes until Stef spoke up, taking a deep breath before she spoke.

“Hey, so Nick and I are going to watch an open mic acoustic show tonight… You guys want to go with us?”

“That sounds like fun. I’m sure Joe would like that too” Anne smiled.

“Haha yeah, but since it’s open mic, make sure he doesn’t try to do his stand-up comedy act” Stef giggled making all of us laugh.

“What about you Kev, you joining us?” Stef turned to me.

“I… I don’t know… I mean, I don’t want to be a fifth wheel” I told them.

Suddenly, Anne’s face lit up, “maybe you don’t have to be!” she blurted out.

Uh oh, this doesn’t sound good.

“Kevin, I know this really nice girl. I’m sure you’ll like her. You don’t have to ask her out or anything, just be friends with her, you know? I promise you, she’s great” Anne said.

I looked at Stef as I bit my lip, hoping she would tell Anne that it might not be a good idea.

“I think it’s a good idea!” Stef said, smiling widely.

Traitor.

“Great! I’ll call her now!” Anne said excitedly.

“And I’ll go tell the boys!” Stef said with as much excitement as Anne.

The two girls then gave me a hug before they headed downstairs.

I sighed as I closed the door behind them, knowing that there’s no way I can back out of it.

Well, tonight can only either go really well or really bad… I hope it’s the first one.
