Chapter 9 bit.chez
“AHHHHH!” Nisha looked up, alarmed at Zee’s exclamation. Zee groaned and not so gently slammed her fist on the computer desk.
“What?”
“I can’t find ANYTHING about how to kill off a siren. NOTHING is useful. The only thing I get is some stupid video game shiit that is just WASTING MY TIME!!!”
“None of these books are helpful either. Maybe Pari has found something useful?” At the mention of her name, the faerie appeared in the middle of the living room, with Nisha and Zee.
“You girls find anything?” Pari asked.
“Nope. You?” Pari shook her head, and all three girls frowned.
“Maybe no one’s tried. Maybe that’s our problem. It can’t be that they are completely UNKILLABLE, right?” Zee’s insistent tone earned a shrug from Nisha.
“Well, we have other problems besides not knowing how to kill her.” Pari said. “Kevin’s refusing to sleep more than an hour or so at a time. That doesn’t give me enough time to take hold of his dreams. And I can’t break the spell Mona has on him if I can’t get into his dreams.”
"Dam.n."
“I’ll call Nick. He’s been sharing a room with Kevin for the last week. Maybe he can find out what’s going on.” Zee pulled her cell phone out of her pocket and hit the speed dial set for Nick. “Hey, hon.” She turned the speaker on.
“Baby, you caught me at just the right moment. We’re on our way to the sound check for tonight. Oh my…”
“Nick, you can tell me about it later. Right now, I need to know what’s going on with Kevin.”
“What do you mean?”
“Pari is here. She can’t get into his dreams. He’s not sleeping at night. I know when you sleep you’re dead to the world, but…”
“That doesn’t make sense. He’s never tired during the day. In fact, he seems to have more energy than Joe does.”
“Da.mn.” Nisha said.
“I’m on speaker, huh?” Nick said.
“Sorry. We are just really worried. We haven’t found anything that could be even REMOTELY helpful in trying to do away with her.”
“I think Mona might be on to us. I think she knows I’m trying to break her control over him, and that’s why she won’t let him sleep.”
“So, what can I do to help?”
“You and Joe talk to him. Ask him how he’s doing. Fix him warm milk. Read him a bedtime story. Slip him some sleeping pills. I don’t care. Just get him to sleep!” Pari jumped in, startling Zee and Nisha at her urgency.
“Um, ok, I guess.” Nick said—apparently he was also startled with Pari’s tone.
“Hey, I’m gonna take you off speaker phone now.” Zee pushed a button on her phone and dashed into the kitchen to continue the conversation in private.
“You’re in love with him.” Nisha said to Pari.
“Don’t try that mind reading shiit with me, vampire.” Pari said.
“I don’t need to. I know you do. Am I right?” Pari said nothing. “I am.”
“I can’t be. It’s too soon.”
“It’s been over a month. You have a special connection with him. You basically live in his dreams. I don’t blame you for falling for him. He’s a great guy.” Pari tried to hide a small smile. “See, I know these things.”
“I—how? How can I be in love with a man who doesn’t know I exist in real life?” Pari flopped onto the couch and buried her face in her hands. “All he knows is that I am some dream. I don’t even know if he remembers me in the morning.” Nisha sat down next to Pari.
“I don’t know if he does or not. But that’s not to say he couldn’t. And even if nothing ever comes of it, he WILL know what you’ve done for him once this whole deal with Mona is over with. I will make sure of it.” A thought struck Nisha.
“Can you find people? Like with your dream control? Can you find…”
“Mona.” Nisha nodded. “No. I can’t find non humans. I can’t enter their dreams.” Nisha sighed in frustration. “But I know she has to either have slept with him already, which obviously she HASN’T done, or she would…”
“Yeah, got that. What’s the other option?”
“She has to be near a large body of water. Her body of water.”
“What do you mean, HER body of water?”
“Sirens originate in the sea.”
“Right.”
“If you keep interrupting me, I’ll never get this out.” Pari crossed her arms. Nisha sighed, but shut her mouth. “Anyway, sirens originate in the sea. Each siren has their home sea. Now, there can be more than one siren from a single sea, but each siren draws her power from the sea which she came from. Mona’s sea is where we’ll find her.” Pari finished.
“And that would be…?”
“Now, THAT, I can find.” Pari grinned.
