Chapter 11
“This is it?” Zee asked, astonished that they were standing in front of nothing but a small river. She could see the other side, there was nothing to this.
“We have to get at her. Now. I—she’s fighting the block. I can’t hold on to him much longer.” Pari spoke urgently.
“How?” Nisha was panicking. “How do we get to her? She could be anywhere along this river.”
“That way.” Pari pointed downstream. Nisha and Zee looked at each other, then back at Pari. “I won’t be able to keep hold of Kevin if I am battling her.”
“Sh.it.” Nisha and Zee took off through the brush along the bank of the river. After about ten minutes of running, they found Mona, partially transformed into her half bird-siren form. “Mona!”
“Who dares to disturb a siren in her waters?” Mona screeched, completing the transformation to her bird-siren form.
“We’re here to reclaim Kevin.”
“You can try.” Mona taunted. Nisha instantly bared her fangs, and Zee began the transformation into wolf. Seconds later, the two of them lunged into the water at Mona. The three of them became a tangle of fur, fangs, and feathers. It didn’t take long for Nisha and Zee to gain the upper hand, as Mona’s strength had been stretched thin keeping Kevin awake.
“Release him, and we may let you live.” Nisha hissed. Mona screeched and took flight. Nisha was able to break away, and only slightly stumbled. Zee was not so lucky. Her teeth were sunken deep into Mona’s flesh, and she wasn’t able to break free until Mona had taken her almost a dozen feet in the air. “Zee!” Mona continued to fly off, as Zee fell to the earth, causing a splash as she hit the water.
“AHHHHHHHHHH!” Zee cried out, pain erupting through her entire body. Nisha sloshed over to her and helped to pull her out of the water. “God da.mn it. Everything HURTS!”
“I know.” Nisha tried to sooth Zee. She sat and pulled the wolf’s head into her lap, stroking her fur.
“You know??? How???” Zee growled. “I didn’t see you falling.” Nisha smiled. “Get Pari. We need to get out of here.”
“Definitely.” Nisha reached out with her mind, searching, until she found Pari. She let Pari know where they were, and a few moments later, the faerie joined them.
“We have to get back to Kevin. We have to get to all of them. She’s going for them.”
“Yeah, after she gets some treatment for that nasty wolf bite Zee left in her.” Pari helped Nisha gather Zee. “How long will it take you to heal yourself?”
“I—” Zee’s swift intake of breath let them know she was in pain. So did the screaming of obscenities that followed.
