Chapter 13
“Kevin!” Kevin looked up to see Mona limping towards him, her ankle wrapped tightly. He stood up from his table in the restaurant and pulled her into a hug. “Kevin.” She sobbed and clung to him for a few moments.
“Mona, what happened?” He lowered her into a chair and took his previous seat. “What’s wrong, baby?”
“I’ve figured out why Nisha and Zee don’t like me.” Kevin immediately scowled. What were Nisha and Zee up to? “I know I should have told you before, but I’m not human.”
“Mona…”
“No, I know I made a mistake in not telling you. I just…I don’t want that life for me anymore. I don’t like the expectations that come with it. I wanted a chance to start over. To actually be human. But I’m not. I should have realized that before. I’m sorry.” It took a few moments for her news to sink in.
“So everyone’s been right about you?”
“No! I am not evil. They think I am some terrible monster that is out to destroy you. Kevin, I love you. I would never, could never, do what they think I am capable of.” He stopped listening once the words I LOVE YOU had been used. She loved him. Did he love her?
Kevin was suddenly in conflict. Immense conflict. Surely last night’s kiss had only been a dream. But then why did he feel so guilty about it? In dreams, one could do anything they wanted…right? And not have to feel like they did something wrong…right? Suddenly that Disney song…A dream is a wish, your heart makes, when you’re fast asleep…began to play over and over in his mind. He’d made a decision in his dream to kiss someone who was not his girlfriend, and he felt terrible for it…but terrible enough to apologize for it???
“Why do they think you’re evil?” She looked shock at his total disregard for her love confession, but she shook it off.
“Someone, some girl teamed up with them. Convinced them I am evil, and now, they are out to get me.”
“Do you know her name?”
“No, I don’t.” She looked like she was about to cry again, so he pulled her into his arms.
“Mona,” finally, after several moments, he spoke. “Mona, if you’re not human, what are you?”
“Fae.”
