Chasing A Rockstar

Nisha sat on her bed, staring at her cell phone. He was meant to call two hours ago, she thought angrily. She picked her phone up and sent a text to him. “Hi there. How are you? You were meant to call ages ago. Please ring me soon? I need to talk to you. iloveyou.” She typed quickly then sent it off. A few minutes later she got a reply back. “Hi babe. So sorry. Very busy. Maybe tomorrow? X ” “Argh!” she screamed in frustration. This was the hundredth time this month that he had done this. She threw her phone onto her desk then collapsed onto her pillow. Well, that was what she got for falling in love with Joe Jonas.

I bet you think it's the last time, your head is spinning and you wonder why.
He's not missing you, but don't take my word, do what you want to.

She thought of how things used to be. How he would know almost everything about her including the fact that she painted her nails in random colours and that her favourite food was pizza. He would call every day and every night and they would talk about everything and anything. She was a huge chatter box but that was one of the things that Joe had loved about her. He would visit whenever he could, even flying out from wherever he was touring just to see her, even if it was for a few hours. He would bring her to the most beautiful places just to relax and daydream with her. Then it all changed. He changed. Meeting, signings and concerts would become more important than her. She tried to ignore it and continued calling him but he was always too busy to answer. She wondered if it was all worth it, to try and pursue him. After all, he was the one that wanted to be with her in the first place. But now that they were in a relationship, it seemed to her that she was the only one that cared about their love.

Chasing a rockstar, but where will you go?

You're chasing him too far, the way you move so slow.

She offered to travel on the road with him. For a few weeks they were happy again but as they boys spent all day carrying out their commitments, by night they were too tired to do anything. Nisha thought that Joe would be different, that he would occasionally take time off of their various activities to spend it with her. But Joe had different plans. A romantic dinner with him was instead replaced with family dinners. Movie nights were replaced with DVD marathons with his brothers. They were alone for only a few minutes each day, just enough to say a quick “I love you” to each other. But it wasn’t enough.

You swear you're innocent, but I know that you'll regret.

Chasing a rockstar now, get over yourself.

She needed to talk to him. To ask him if he still wanted to be in their relationship. Because the way things were going, Nisha thought that she was better off on her own. She knew that he was in New York for the week so she took her laptop out and placed it on her bed. After 30 minutes she had booked an airplane ticket for the next day. She snapped her laptop shut, picked her phone up again then began to text a message to Joe: “I’m serious this time. I really need to talk to you. I’ll see you in two days.”

You want to take a chance. But you keep thinking it will end in romance.

Nisha boarded the plane, found her seat and then sat down. Taking her iPod out of her bag, she placed it on shuffle then leant her head back. She remembered the first time she had met him. It was by accident, she had bumped into hi m at the mall and knocked the two of them over. She was like the female equivalent of Joe himself. She had been shopping with her friends and goofing around that she didn’t see where she was going. But she was so amazed by how he just brushed it off and how down-to-earth he seemed that she fell under his charm almost immediately. Their relationship soon blossomed and they were both smitten with each other. She would go wherever he wanted to go and do whatever he felt like doing. He was famous so she thought that if she didn’t chase him sufficiently enough that he would find someone better. But it was the biggest mistake she ever made.

As Nisha stepped out of the terminal, she started to shake. But not because of how cold she was, but because she was scared. As much as she wanted to leave him and get on with her life, she didn’t want to just let the past year and memories fall behind like they meant nothing. She still loved him and she always would, but fear of rejection swept through her body as she realized that no matter what happened next, it would change both their friendship and relationship forever.

He's not missing you. But don't take my word, do what you want to.

She called him once she arrived at her hotel. Like always, she got his voicemail. She flipped her phone shut then took a deep breath. She called his number again and this time she was ready to leave a message.

“Hey Joe. It’s me. I’m in New York right now. I’m hoping you’ll get this message by tomorrow. I’ll be waiting at Central Park at one o’clock. I’ll see you there.”

Once again she flipped her phone shut. Lying down on the bed, she slowly sank into one of the pillows. And as she lay there, she wondered how she was going to tell him how she really felt without breaking his heart. And more importantly, without breaking her own.

I guess now it’s up to you.

Nisha sat on the bench, waiting in the park. She drained the last few drops of her hot chocolate then threw the empty paper cup in the bin. She looked at her watch. 12:55. She opened up the book beside her and began to read. A few minutes after she had started, she heard footsteps making their way towards her. She placed her book in her bag then turned. There he was, standing a few feet away from her. It had been a few weeks since she had last seen him and his good looks almost stunned her all over again. His dark hair was tucked under a hat and his eyes were gazing at her in a mixture of surprise and relief. He stepped towards her. “Hey, I’ve missed you,” he smiled, reaching out to kiss her. Nisha tilted her head to the side, his lips landing on her cheek. She smiled briefly then averted her eyes away from him. She was afraid that if she looked at him for too long, she might change her mind on what she would say.

Why can't you stay right where you are?
You're losing track of me so let’s start this over tonight.

He looked confused. “What’s wrong?” he asked, taking hold of her hands. She slowly looked up into his eyes. “Do you love me?” she asked quietly. “Of course I do,” he chuckled softly. “Then why don’t you ever show it?” she said angrily, pulling her hands away. “What are you talking about?” Joe asked, surprised from her sudden mood change, “Last time I checked we were fine.” “How could we be fine Joe?” Nisha exclaimed, “You never call anymore, I don’t see you for weeks on end and it seems like your music is more important to you than me!” “You know that’s not true,” Joe said furiously. “Are you sure about that?” she asked softly but aggravated. “Look, I know that I haven’t always been the best boyfriend but it’s been hard. My schedule has been so busy; I don’t have time for barely anyone anymore, let alone myself. But I promise that once this tour is over, we can concentrate on us again,” he smiled. “That’s what you said last tour,” she retorted, “And besides, you break almost every promise you make.” “What’s that supposed to mean?” he asked in disbelief. “It means that the way things are right now, it feels like I’m the only one that cares about this relationship! Joe, I can’t be in love with someone that doesn’t feel the same way about me.” “So what, you think that just because I’m not around, it means I don’t care?” he asked angrily. “That’s exactly what I’m saying,” she snapped back. “Well, you’re wrong and I can prove that to you,” he said defiantly. “You don’t need to prove anything to me,” she said, her voice softening slightly. Joe looked into her eyes. They were almost pleading to him. “All I’m asking is whether you love me or not and if you truly care about me. I want to know if you’re willing to spend more time with me and to work on our relationship.” “So you’re making me choose? Either you or my music?” he asked, the hurt audible in his voice. “Yes,” she said, voice trembling, “I can’t-” her voice broke and she looked away for a second, “I can’t put my plans on hold for you anymore. I need to know if you want this relationship. I need to know if I can move on with my life.”

Give up your dreams and say goodbye.

Joe remained quiet for a few moments. The he looked up and locked his brown eyes with her hazel-caramel ones, the ones that he had noticed the first time he saw her and the ones he had fallen in love with. He hesitated before he spoke. “I’m sorry,” he whispered, raising a shaking hand to caress her cheek. But she pulled away. “That’s all I needed to hear,” she said, a tear slipping down her cheek. She looked long and hard into his eyes one more time. It would be the last time she would ever do so. And as the tears started fall more steadily, she grabbed her bag, pushed past him and walked away from him for the final time. Joe stood there, immediately regretting what he had just done. He sat down on the bench for a moment, burying his head in his hands. Then he stood up and called out her name. “Nisha! Nisha, wait!”

But she was already gone.

You swear you're innocent, but I know that you'll regret.
