let me know what you think of this first chapter! i'm hoping to get this updated by the end of the week but my other fic (You're All I See) needs to get updated first. hmm...what else? oh, it's about 3 years after the last one ended. ummm, yeah that's about it.
Chapter One
Jessica Jonas shielded her eyes from the sun and watched as the small jet taxied down the runway toward her. For a second she contemplated running toward it so she could be with her husband sooner. Then she remembered the eighteen-month-old balancing on her hip and the two three-year-old girls holding onto their grandmother’s hands next to her. “That’s Daddy’s plane,” she said, smiling widely as it rolled to a stop a few yards away. Her little boy gurgled excitedly and smiled at her.
A.J. and Melinda tried to pull Denise closer to the plane, making her laugh. “Now, girls, you need to calm down. This is a very busy airport and we don’t need anyone getting hurt today. I don’t think your dad wants to make a trip to the emergency room on his first day home.”
As the door opened and the stairs were lowered, Jess started walking toward the plane. By the time the band started to make their way down the stairs she was almost running, careful not to jostle Paul Kevin Jonas III. Her breath caught in her throat as he came out the door. His smile made her forget about having to spend the last two months alone, just like it did each time he came home from tour. He walked down the stairs, never breaking eye contact with his wife.
“Daddy!” A.J. broke out of Denise’s grip and ran across the pavement as fast as her legs would go. Not one to be left behind, Melinda ran after her, trying to win the impromptu race to their father. Kevin laughed and dropped his messenger bag on the ground. He knelt down just in time to open his arms for his daughters to run into them. The weight of their tiny bodies almost knocked him over. He closed his arms around them and held the two girls tightly against his chest. They giggled as he covered their cheeks with kisses.
“So did you miss me?” Kevin asked.
“Yes!” Melinda squealed as she hugged him tighter.
“Alright you two, Mommy wants to say hi to Daddy, too,” Jess said from behind them. Kevin looked up and his face brightened at the sight of his wife with their son on her hip.
“I think your grandpa’s got presents for you two in his suitcase,” Kevin told Melinda and A.J. They wiggled out of his arms and went to find Kevin Sr. He stood up and smiled at Jess. Her blue eyes sparkled brighter than he’d remembered. “I missed you so much,” he managed to say before kissing her lips tenderly.
“Daddy,” baby Kevin gurgled. He grabbed a handful of his father’s hair and yanked, breaking up his parents’ kiss.
“Hey, buddy, I’m glad to see you too but that hurts Daddy.” Kevin laughed and untangled the tiny fingers from his hair.
“Hey, Jess,” Nick said as he walked over to them with a guitar case in his hand.
“Nick!” Jess hugged him tightly with her free arm. “God, I missed you.”
“I missed you, too.” He grinned at his nephew. “Hey, K3.”
“Kevvy, say hi to your Uncle Nick,” Jess prompted.
“Hello, Untle Nit,” the little boy said. He shyly hid his face against his mother’s neck.
“Haha! He called you Nit!” Joe laughed. He quickly hugged Jess and gave her a peck on the cheek.
“Joe, why don’t you take K3 over to see Dad?” Kevin asked. He nodded his head toward his wife and hoped his brother would get the hint.
“Sure thing, man.” He took the baby from Jess and kissed the top of his head. “Let’s go see your grandpa, Cubed.”
“Did you just call my son ‘Cubed’?” Jess asked.
“Yeah, like K cubed, K to the third power.” Everyone stared at him. “Exponents? Kev would be K squared. Did no one read their math text books?” He shook his head and walked away.
“Joe knows what exponents are?” Jess asked in a surprised tone.
“He’s been reading this SAT prep book,” Nick explained.
“Wow, what for?”
“He wants to take some college classes in the fall,” Kevin explained. “So Nick, you should go help the guys unload the drum kit. I think I saw one of the airport people drop the snare.”
“Can no one understand that the snare is the most delicate of all drums?” Nick mumbled as he stormed off toward the crowd unloading the cargo hold of the jet.
“So was there really snare drum abuse going on or was that just a clever ruse to get me all to yourself?” Jess asked. She put her hands on the back of Kevin’s neck and stared into his green eyes.
“Does it really matter?”
“No, I guess not.” She laughed and twirled one of his curls around her finger. “I can’t believe I haven’t seen you in two whole months. I missed you so much.” A few tears dropped down her cheeks.
“You have no idea,” Kevin whispered before leaning down to kiss her passionately. His hands ran up and down the sides of her body and wished that they were at home in their bedroom and not standing near a crowded airport runway.
Joe crouched down between his nieces. “Alright girls, ready? One, two…three!”
“Ewwww!” the three of them yelled at Kevin and Jess.
“What do you mean ‘ew’?” Jess asked. She put her hands on her hips and gave her daughters a fake stern face.
“Kissing is gross,” A.J. said through her giggles.
“Oh yeah?” Kevin ran after his daughters, making them scream and run away. He scooped them both up and playfully kissed their faces. He carried them over to Jess’s car that was waiting in the small parking lot.
Jess just smiled and picked up Kevin’s bag that he’d left on the ground. “So how’d the tour go?” she asked Joe.
“Pretty good.” He took the bag from her as they walked over to where the rest of the family was gathered.
“Just pretty good?” He shrugged. “What’s wrong?”
“Huh? Oh, nothing. Just exhausted.” He sighed and tried to give her a reassuring smile.
“Don’t you try that generic excuse crap on me. What’s the deal, Joe?”
“No deal, I promise.” He held his hands up defensively.
“Alright.” Jess eyed him skeptically. Something was off about him but she couldn’t figure out what. “So you’re coming over for dinner tonight, right?”
“Depends. What’re you making?”
“You’re lucky I know you’re teasing. We’re just doing hot dogs and burgers.”
“Kevin’s grilling?”
“Yeah…”
“I think I’ll stay at home.”
“Oh come on! He only lit the patio on fire once! And even then it wasn’t that bad.”
“Jess, the fire department showed up.”
“But that’s only cause our neighbors’re nosey old people. And he’s better at it now, I promise.”
“And?”
“And there’s a fire extinguisher right next to the grill.”
“In that case I will absolutely be there.”
“What’s so funny?” Kevin asked when his wife got into the passenger’s seat of their SUV.
“Nothing, baby. Just glad to have you guys back, that’s all.”
* * * * *
“And they all lived happily ever after.” Kevin quietly closed the book and looked back and forth at his two daughters. They were both fast asleep in their beds. A.J. had her thumb in her mouth and Melinda was clinging tightly to her stuffed cricket, Leroy. He tiptoed over to each of their beds and lightly kissed their cheeks. “Goodnight,” he whispered before turning off the light and closing the door. As he made his way down the hall he poked his head into the baby’s room. He walked in and stood at the edge of the crib, watching his son inhale and exhale slowly.
“It’s amazing, isn’t it?” Jess asked.
“You would think it would get easier the more times I’m away…”
“Well you’re home now and that’s all that matters.” She wrapped her arms around his waist and rested her head on his back. It was so nice to just be in the same room with him again. “Come on, let’s get out of here before he wakes up and I never get to bed.”
“Well we don’t want that happening.” Kevin smirked and took Jess’s hand as they walked to their bedroom. He climbed into his side of the bed and watched as his wife took the elastic tie out of her hair, letting her dark hair down out of the pony tail she’d been wearing all day.
“Well, goodnight,” Jess said as she slid under the covers beside him. She kissed his cheek and turned off the light on the bedside table.
Kevin stayed sitting up in total disbelief that after not sharing a bed for two months a kiss on the cheek was all her was getting on his first night home. “Alright. Well, goodnight then,” he said sadly. He pulled the blankets up over his shoulders and rolled over so that he was looking at the wall. He tried to think of what he could’ve possibly done in the last ten hours that would make her mad. Then his eyes snapped open. What if she met someone else while he was gone? “Hey, baby…” As he rolled over he was surprised by Jess jumping on top of him. He could only laugh as she pulled his shirt up over his head.
“And what is so funny, Mr. Jonas?”
“I thought you were mad at me or something.”
“Nope, just felt like toying with you a little.” She leaned down and kissed him passionately.
“That was sadistic.”
“Well that’s what you get for leaving me alone with three kids for eights weeks.” She winked at him and played with the bottom hem of her nightgown.
“God, I love you.”
