-Chapter One-
Growing up with new age thinking parents has made my life choices so much easier. When I decided to wait out college and experience life for a year, my parents embraced me with open arms. I think they were relieved actually, as backwards as that sounds, that I didn't take the scholarly route. So I packed my bags, moved in with an old friend of mine in New York City and started living. That's when things started getting interesting.
---
"Jenny" I whined as I sat on the floor of our apartment, surrounded by a sea of DVDs that we had both contributed to our collection when we moved in.
Looking into the living room from the kitchen she smiled, "Yes Little Miss Whiny pants?".
Childishly, I stuck my tongue out at her. "I can't find anything for us to watch!" I exclaimed with a sigh, pointing to the DVDs that circled around me.
Rolling her eyes, she came into the living room with a bowl of popcorn in hand. "Oh come on, there has to be at least one we can agree on."
I shrugged, "Well I could always just pick one with my eyes shut?" I suggested.
Jenny placed the bowl of popcorn down on the coffee table and lay down on the couch. "Alright, as long as it's not one of your five hour long documentaries."
"I happen to like my five hour long documentaries thank you very much." I said with a fake sneer.
We both started laughing. Shutting my eyes, I fished into the pile of DVDs. "I pick...this one!" Opening my eyes I laughed at my choice. I raised the DVD above my head so Jenny could see it. She started laughing too.
"Legally Blonde." she said giggling. Shaking her head she just looked at me, "Do you remember your first night in the city we watched this. And you had me doing the bend and snap with you."
"Not to mention I had the entire thing memorized so you kept throwing popcorn at me to get me to shut up." I said with a smile.
"It worked didn't it?" she said teasingly.
I rolled my eyes at her and put the DVD in. "It won't work this time." I said in a sing song voice as the opening credits started. I laughed as I noticed Jenny had her first popcorn kernel poised in her hand, ready to throw at me.
---
I woke up later with popcorn laced in my naturally curly hair. We had fallen asleep just at the part where Elle wins the summer internship with Callahan. Smiling I took the opportunity to stand straight up and jump on the couch, startling Jenny.
"WAKE UP JENNY!" I shouted as I continued bouncing. She looked up at me glaring.
"Not cool Amaryllis, not cool." she said in a grouchy voice, swatting her hand menacingly in my direction. I just laughed and kept jumping. "Seriously though, how do you always have so much energy." she asked shaking her head at me.
"Well that is simple," I began as continued jumping, "I don't take life too seriously. If I did that, well I'd be like every sad gloomy person in the world. And we wouldn't want that now would we?" I slowed down my jumping until I sat down in my seat.
Jenny just laughed, "Well you my dear are certainly full of contradictions."
I looked at her with one eyebrow raised. "How so?" I asked.
"Well for someone who doesn't take life too seriously, you never let yourself experience one of its greatest pleasures." she said matter-of-factly.
"Which would be?" I queried.
"Love stupid!" she said throwing the left over popcorn kernels at me. She managed to hit my cheek, which made her chuckle. I simply brushed it aside and sighed.
"Just because I'm free spirited doesn't mean I'm not a girl." I said quietly. She looked at me with an odd face. "Oh come on Jenny! Every girl doesn't want to get her heart broken. So we all treat them with care as if they were made of glass. But I promise you if love happens to sneak up on me in the future I won't run away." I said with a smile.
"Will you pinky swear on that?" she asked with a smile creeping onto her face. I nodded and we linked our pinkies together. I got up and began to leave the room. "Hey!" she said, as I turned around. "Where are you going, aren't you going to help me clean up?"she asked.
I shook my head. "Whoever makes the mess cleans it up remember? Roomie rule number two. And this mess, all yours." I said with a grin as I walked off to my room.
"You're just lucky I like you enough not to kick you out" she called down the hall to me.
"Love you too Jenny!" I called back.
