So, here's the second part to the story!
Enjoy! :D
Kevin laid in his bunk, watching the rain slowly slide down the fogged window of the tour bus. It’d been just a month since Kate had walked out his door, one month of plastering on a smile, thirty days since he’d been back to the place it had happened.
Removing his hand from under the pillow his head rested upon, Kevin placed his hand to the cool glass and rubbed his thumb across it, clearing enough of the translucent barrier to see out of. Breathing heavily with regret, he gazed across the highway and through the rain, thoughts of what Kate may be doing at the moment running through his mind.
Rolling over to face the aisle, Kevin reached below his bunk to the suitcase at the very top, sliding his hand into the smallest compartment to reveal the black velvet box he had bought just a month and a half earlier. He placed it tenderly in front of the window, fearing if he was too rough, it might break as well. Running a hand through his untamed curls, Kevin sighed softly as he read the inscription, closing his eyes to feel the emptiness.
Kevin remembered every detail of their relationship, the fights and the kisses, all the dumb jokes and stupid things they found hilarious, and fought to keep his composure as he heard her voice say “I love you.” He remembered the first time he had heard her say it as vividly as if he was watching it in real life, replaying the scene through his mind.
Kevin and Kate had been on their second official date in the four months they had known each other. After spending so much time apart, only getting to talk or text over the phone, Kevin had tried to the point of insanity to get everything perfect: getting there on time, reservations at her favorite restaurant, bringing her favorite flower; however, nothing had seemed to go in his favor. Kevin’s car had broken down on his way to pick up the flowers, which had been sold out by the time he got there, and because of the break down, they missed their reservations, but for some reason, Kate didn’t care.
With nothing else to do, the two of them ended up ordering pizza and ate it in the middle of the park by Kate’s apartment, where it began to down pour. Kevin remembered the laughing screech Kate made as the cold rain hit her bare arms and how their hair had plastered to their faces in a matter of minutes. He remembered how they ran down the sidewalk trying to get back to Kate’s apartment and he remembered how they were stuck at the intersection under the street light when the crosswalk wouldn’t change and the cars didn’t seem to stop coming.
Peeling his eyes away from the ring, Kevin shut the box and stared out the window once more, playing the final frames, slowly welcoming insanity as he heard her say “I love you” once again.
Kevin’s smile grew bigger as he watched Kate bend her neck backwards, watching the falling sky come crashing down on her closed eyes. With outreached arms, Kate stood under the soft glow of the street light, the drops of rain slowly rolling down her face, accentuating the curve of her pale lips. Kevin smiled softly at the beauty Kate found in the simplest of things and could barely comprehend what he was doing as he stood himself in front of her, placing a hand on the small of her back gently pulling her closer.
Kate opened her eyes, the hazel coloring radiating in the soft light as she lightly bit her lip; Kevin’s eyes danced across them, noticing the bead of rain her teeth had split and the barely visible cloud of breath forming as she exhaled. Leaning his head down, Kevin placed a kiss on her lips, feeling a smile form on hers as well as his.
“I think I’m in love with you,” he said softly, resting his forehead against hers, completely forgetting the rain crashing down and the cross walk buzzing, telling them they could cross.
“Would it help you make up your mind if I told you I love you?” She questioned in all sincerity.
“Are you saying that you…?”
“Yeah Kevin, I am. I love you,” she smiled, her eyes gleaming with excitement as he responded with the same.
Kevin rolled onto his back, staring helplessly at the bunk above his. He remembered the moment with such intensity. He could see in her eyes that at that moment she’d forgotten every other heart break in the past, that she had never felt that way before.
Placing his feet to the ground, Kevin stood and walked to the main area of the bus to find his brothers gathered around a keyboard, Nick with guitar in hand. Kevin looked at them with tired eyes; he’d given up on sleeping for the night, and every other night before.
“Hey Kev, how you doin’?” Nick asked softly as he jotted something down quickly.
“What are you working on?” He asked, giving a shrug to Nick’s question.
Kevin reached for the notepad as Nick pulled it away, writing another line. A confused look spread across Kevin’s face, he’d hoped to help them, thinking it might help him feel better.
“Oh, so now I can’t help with a song?” Kevin asked angrily. “First you won’t tell me what you’re playing on guitar when I asked, then sound check turns into a secret play-something-on-piano writing session, and now I can’t help write!” Kevin ranted, his voice getting louder.
“Whoa Kevin, wait a–”
“No, I can take a hint guys, thanks. Why not just kick me out of the band?” He continued as he headed back to his bunk.
“Kevin, you’re overreacting,” Joe and Nick said as they grabbed him by the arms and pulled him back to the couch.
“That’s not it,” Joe started. “We’re, well, we’re writing–”
“– a song for you. We were hoping to keep it a secret until it was finished, but we’re stuck. Nothing seems to sound right,” Nick finished as he handing him the notepad.
Kevin’s eyes traced the lyrics printed across the lines, each word hitting him harder than the one before it. His listened to the music Nick had played-back on the keyboard and listened to him strum along. Kevin robotically took the pen off the table, scribbled the second verse quickly on the pad, and stood up. Stopping the music, Nick stared at him as he walked back to the bunks and curled into his. Joe silently picked up the pad and began to read the words.
“That’s it,” he whispered, looking at Nick.
So there it is! Comments are lovely. :]
