Chapter 18
“Is it just me or did that hospital room smell funny?” Nick wrinkled his nose. I laughed. “Umm…actually it kind of did.” I finally said. “I knew it!” Nick said out loud. I reached up and twisted one of his curls around my finger. “Sure you did.” I smiled. “I don’t know if I should take that as a complement or something bad.” Nick said. “Hey, would I intentionally say something mean to you?” I looked at him. “Well, you are related to Kay…” Nick looked around mischievously, trying not to laugh. “Ok, that was mean!” Just looking at him trying not to laugh made me laugh.
“Anyway, umm, how much longer are we supposed to stay at Disney?” I asked. “We are going to Magic Kingdom tomorrow, and then we are leaving the day after that.” Nick said. “To where?” I asked and he just smiled. “Of course, I get left out on everything!” I said. “Well you’re technically not being left out, since the surprise if for you.” Nick said. “Oh, so we get technical!” I laughed. “Just trust me, you’ll love it.” Nick smiled.
He leaned over and kissed me right on the lips. Just then, Frankie came running out of the hospital yelling something. “What the-“ Nick whispered. Just as he flew by, I grabbed his arm. “Frankie, what are you doing?” I asked. Denise came running out and stopped when she saw I had Frankie. “They’re trying to make me eat that nasty food!” He complained. “Haha! The cafeteria food is pretty nasty.” Nick said. We all started to laugh. “I was getting pretty hungry but now I think I’ll wait.” I finally said.
My mom came out with the other boys. “Theres a McDonalds down the road if you guys want to walk there.” She said. Kevin took a big sniff in. “And theres a Starbucks, too.” He said. That got everyone laughing. “Umm, mom, you know what I like, I’ll stay here with Nick.” I said. “Ok, then we’ll be back soon.” They all turned and left. Nick looked at me and smiled, and I smiled back. “Do you want to just go back inside, in the AC?” he asked. “Sure” I said.
We got up and walked back to the room, and I turned on the TV. I flipped through the channels for about 10 seconds and turned it back off. I turned to Nick. “Sooo, now what?” I said. “We wait” Nick sighed. “For what?” I asked. “Worlds end” Nick answered. “Haha very funny Nicholas!” I laughed. “Ugh! I hate being called Nicholas!” Nick said. “Ummm…?” I paused for a second. “Isn’t that your name?” I gave Nick a weird look. “I prefer Nick, and just Nick.” He mumbled. “You are sooo weird.” I stared at him. “Haha so you think!” He said.
Soon everyone marched in with food. It looked kind of funny so I ended up laughing. My mom had a huge smile on the face. I looked at her strangely. “Hurry up and eat! We got Nick to be released early and theres a big surprise for you at the hotel!” She said. “Oookay” I ate my burger.
A little while later a doctor gave Nick one last injection in his arm and I turned my head. He wrapped his arm in some gauze. We walked outside and Nick said, “Yes, I’m free!” I had to laugh. We all got into a taxi van where were driven back to the hotel.
At the hotel, I pulled out my room key and Nick and I raced ahead to the suite. There was a man in an army suit sitting on the couch. He stood up and started to walk closer when I recognized him. “Daddy!” I ran up to him. I hugged him tightly and felt a tear roll down my cheek. “But-how are you here?” I asked. He just smiled. “I got my break a little early.” I pulled away from him and took a deep breath, smiling. I took Nick’s hand. “Daddy, this is Nick.” I said. “Yea, your mom told me all about him. A lot for just a few days if you ask me.” He smiled. Nick hugged me and kissed my cheek, and whispered in my ear, “And we still have the whole summer tour ahead of us.”
