chapter treinta y seis
“I really hope they aren’t late,” Nick said as he and Katie climbed out of his car, both of them holding drinks from Starbucks. They had just arrived at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, where they had been every day for the past week for tour rehearsals. “I already think Joe is cutting it way too close by only giving himself a week for rehearsals.”
“Sweetie, everything will be fine,” Katie said as they through the parking garage. “First, I don’t think that Joe and Amanda will be late, because they know you’ll come after them. And second, even though you rehearse and rehearse, chances are Joe will still do his own thing half the time.”
“But if he actually showed up to the rehearsals, maybe he would learn what he’s supposed to do and not have to improvise,” Nick said as they walked past the security guard into the building.
“Nicholas, we’re talking about Joe here,” Katie reasoned, and Nick sighed.
“I guess you’re right,” he conceded as they walked up a flight of stairs.
“So how long are we here for today?” Katie asked as she yawned before taking another sip of her drink.
“We’re going until 9, but you really don’t have to stay,” Nick said as they reached the door that led to the arena itself. “This must be boring for you.”
“I can’t really leave, because I have nowhere to go and no means to get anywhere,” Katie said with a chuckle as they walked into the arena, where there were already people running around and setting things up for the day. “And it won’t be boring. I’ll get to listen to Amanda tell me all the funny things that happened to them on their honeymoon.”
As Katie said this, and her and Nick walked around the side of the stage to where a group of people were standing, Katie heard a loud squeal.
“Katie!” Amanda yelled as she broke away from the group and ran over to Katie, throwing her arms around her neck and giving her a big hug.
“You’re choking me,” Katie managed to say, and Amanda loosened her grip on Katie so that she could breathe better.
“I missed you!” Amanda said as she let Katie go and took a step back. “I decided we need to go on vacation to the Bahamas sometime together. I think you’d like it there.”
“Okay,” Katie said with a laugh as Joe walked over to where they were standing. “Hey Joe, good to see you,” Katie said with a wave.
“Good to see you too,” Joe said, a grin plastered across his face. “I’d love to stay and chat but it looks like Nick might bite my head off if I don’t get over there,” Joe said, pointing to his right. Katie and Amanda turned, and sure enough, Nick had walked away from them to get ready for the rehearsals to start. He was looking impatiently in their direction.
“Go ahead,” Amanda said as she laughed at Nick. “Katie and I have a lot of catching up to do.”
“Okay,” Joe said as he leaned towards Amanda and kissed her quickly. “I love you Mrs. Jonas.”
“I love you too, Mr. Jonas,” Amanda said as Joe turned and walked towards Nick and Kevin. She then turned to look at Katie.
“That’s so cute that he calls you Mrs. Jonas,” Katie said.
“Well actually, lately he’s been calling me God, but uh, not really in this kind of setting,” Amanda replied casually. Katie looked at her quizzically for a moment, before it registered in her head what Amanda was getting at.
“Ew, Amanda, please don’t,” Katie began as the two girls walked over to some chairs that were set up off to the side of the stage. “I think we need to set some new ground rules now that you’re married.”
“I wasn’t aware that our friendship needed ground rules, Katie,” Amanda said as they sat down next to each other. Amanda snatched the Starbucks drink out of Katie’s hand and took a sip. “We’re besties, so we tell each other everything.”
“Except I don’t need to or want to hear a single detail about your sex life, please,” Katie said, shaking her head. “You’re talking about my boyfriend’s brother, which is gross.”
“It’s good to hear you call him your boyfriend again,” Amanda said with a grin. “You guys were broken up for way too long.”
“Tell me about it,” Katie said as she snatched her drink back from Amanda. “And I really needed someone around to keep me company while you were gone on your honeymoon.”
“I’m sure Nicholas kept you company way better than I could ever,” Amanda said, causing Katie to roll her eyes.
“I never did thank you for the awkward moment you caused at your wedding,” Katie said to Amanda, who looked at her with confusion on her face. “You know, when we were dancing. And you yelled that we kissed. And everyone in the room looked at us.”
“I was in shock!” Amanda defended loudly, causing a few people standing near them to look in their direction. “It was very unexpected, since last I had known you two were still not together.”
“I understand that,” Katie said. “But you didn’t need to go announcing it to everyone and their uncle. Literally,” she continued, causing Amanda to giggle.
“Okay, I’m sorry, but I was just excited,” Amanda admitted. “I mean, it was my wedding day, and my bestie finally got back together with my husband’s brother, and everything was just perfect.”
“Well I’m glad I could contribute to the perfectness of your day,” Katie said, laughing. “But enough about me, you were just in the Bahamas for two weeks. I want to know about all of the fun things you did.”
“I thought you just said you didn’t want to hear about my sex life,” Amanda said, and once again Katie rolled her eyes.
“Amanda, I meant outside of the hotel room,” Katie said as she took one last sip of her drink before handing it to Amanda to finish off. “I’m sure you didn’t spend 2 weeks straight in there, because that would have to be some sort of record.” The two girls laughed together as the boys and the band started to play the chords to Paranoid, which loudly began to play through the arena.
“Well we did some pretty cool stuff,” Amanda said to Katie, now speaking louder so that she could be heard over the music. “Like we went snorkeling, and the ocean was absolutely beautiful, and we saw some sweet fish. Oh, and we went on this hike thing to this waterfall, which was really cool too. I took a ton of pictures.”
“You’re gonna have to show them all to me,” Katie said.
“Of course I will,” Amanda said. “And we got chased by this giant dog, too.”
“What!?” Katie exclaimed. “A giant dog?”
“Yeah, it was so random,” Amanda said, laughing at the memory. “We were walking along the beach and it was probably 6 or 7 at night, and all of a sudden we hear this barking behind us. So Joe turns around and he sees this giant brown dog running after us down the beach.”
“That’s so weird,” Katie said as she laughed along with Amanda. “What did you do?”
“We just took off running, and we were pretty close to the hotel so it wasn’t too far of a run,” Amanda said. “But we were all confused because it was a private beach, and there was just this random huge ass dog chasing us down it.”
“That’s hilarious,” Katie said as the two girls laughed together. “I would have paid money to see that.”
“I’m surprised no one got pictures of it,” Amanda said. “Although the hotel was really good about making sure that no one followed us around trying to get pictures. And for the most part, people left us alone.”
“Well I’m glad you didn’t get killed by a mob of teenies on your honeymoon,” Katie said. “Because that would be a pretty bad way to go.”
“Tell me about it,” Amanda said. “But seriously, like over your spring break I’m making you get on an airplane and go with me to the Bahamas. They had such good food, and the beaches were awesome.”
“I’m there,” Katie said. The girls then continued to talk about what Amanda did on her honeymoon as they watched the boys go through several songs that they were going to be playing on their tour. Nick and Kevin took the time to quickly explain to Joe everything that they had done, and what he was expected to do during the performances. Then they’d run through the songs over and over again, making sure that they got everything right before moving on to the next one. After a few hours of this, everyone broke for lunch and some down time while they worked on changing up the stage.
“You guys sound really good,” Amanda said as Joe and Nick made their way over to their girlfriends with plates full of food. “I think you’ve got a good set list this tour.”
“I think we do too,” Joe said as he took a huge bite of his sandwich.
“And the special effects are going to be wicked sweet,” Katie said, which resulted in a laugh from everyone because of her use of the word ‘wicked’. “Nick was telling me about them last night, and the rotating stage up in the air during Turn Right sounds awesome.”
“I take credit for that idea,” Joe said as he took another large bite of his sandwich.
“That was his lone contribution to the stage design,” Nick muttered under his breath. Amanda and Katie giggled, while Joe shot him a glare.
“You weren’t the one trying to plan a wedding and a giant tour at the same time,” Joe said.
“True,” Nick said as he finished the last bite of his own sandwich.
“And Joe’s idea is kind of the best part of the show,” Katie admitted, earning her a less-than-pleased look from Nick. “I’m sorry, but it is,” Katie conceded to him.
“That’s what I’m talking about,” Joe said, holding out his hand for Katie to give him a high-five. She did so as Amanda laughed, and then Katie scooted closer to Nick and wrapped her arms around him.
“I’m sorry baby, your ideas are good too,” she cooed into his ear, resting her head on his shoulder. She felt tension leave his body as he relaxed, and she kissed him on the cheek.
“Okay lovebirds, we’re still here,” Amanda said as Katie unwrapped her arms from around Nick, who now had a small smile on his face. “You’re going to have to tell me about this stage later,” she said to Joe.
“I think we might be doing some stuff with Turn Right tomorrow, so maybe you can see it in action,” Joe said, and Nick nodded in agreement. “And we’re going to practice our flips later, so you can see those, too.”
“Nick, I’m expecting you to land a few more flips this time around,” Amanda said to Nick.
“Hey, those flips are hard to do, especially in tight pants,” Nick said defensively. “I want to see you try to do them.”
“Just don’t fall and break something,” Katie said. “I think you’d have some angry fans if you had to cancel shows because you broke your back trying to do a flip.”
“I haven’t broken anything yet,” Nick said. “I’m not as injury prone as some people around here,” he continued, eyeing both Joe and Katie, who looked at each other and shrugged.
“I’ve got no idea what he’s talking about,” Katie said, and Joe shook his head in agreement.
“Let’s not get into this argument,” Amanda interrupted. “All I know is that this summer is going to be awesome. Except...I’m really going to miss my bestie out on the road. I don’t know what I’m going to do without you.”
“I know,” Katie said, her smile quickly turning into a frown. “You’re going to have to come visit me on your days off.”
“Actually,” Nick interrupted, and everyone turned to look at him. “That’s...something I’ve been meaning to talk to you about. I talked to my parents and...since Stephanie’s coming, and since obviously Joe’s got Amanda...I wanted to invite you to come on tour this summer with us.”
“Really?” Katie asked excitedly as her eyes lit up, and Nick nodded. “Of course I’ll come with you! Except...it’s kind of short notice. And,” she continued, her face starting to fall again, “my parents probably won’t love that we’d be leaving on Friday for the entire summer.”
“I might have already taken care of that,” Nick said with a grin, and a smile immediately grew on Katie’s mouth again. “And your parents said that as long as you wanted to go, you were welcome to come.”
“Well of course I want to go!” Katie exclaimed. “This is going to be awesome!”
“It’ll be a PARTY!” Amanda yelled. “All of us, on a tour bus together, for two months straight...the USA won’t know what to do.”
“It’ll be a party in the USA!” Katie said enthusiastically.
“I’ll be nodding my head like yeah, and moving my hips like yeah,” Joe continued as everyone laughed, and Katie gave Nick a hug, before they began to talk about what the summer ahead had in store for them.
