Chapter 17
Joe and I didn’t really talk about what happened. He just ran off after the kiss, which made me feel a little unwanted. But later he explained he was late for his first hour. I forgave him easily. I don’t know where he is right now, so I’m passing the time by writing a song for him.
“Knock, knock,” Nick said at the door. “Can I come in?”
“Yeah, sure,” I said, putting my notebook under my leg.
“What’s that?” he grinned, sitting on my bed.
“What’s what?”
“The notebook you just shoved under your leg.”
“Well, obviously it’s a notebook.”
“You are so stubborn, you know that?” he laughed.
I didn’t answer him but just smiled.
“So, I heard about you and Joe,” Nick said quietly, giggling.
“Really?” I asked.
“Yep. I am so happy he’s over that Kaycee girl.”
“Well, you helped Nick. So thank you.”
“No problem. But um…I need to tell you something.” Nick’s face turned serious suddenly.
“What is it?”
“We’re –”
“Nick!”
I looked past Nick, who turned around, and saw Joe.
“I’ll tell her.”
“Okay, good. I hate to be the bearer of bad news,” Nick said, standing up and leaving.
“Joe, what’s going on?” I asked hesitantly.
“We’re…leaving.”
“Oh. Where are you going? The store?”
“No. Home,” he looked down.
“But you are home.”
“My home, Sammie.”
My eyes darted everywhere but Joe’s eyes. I didn’t want to look at him, I couldn’t. How could he be leaving me so suddenly? Right after we kissed? And this was his home too. He didn’t need to go to his other home.
“Why?”
“My grandpa is sick, and then we’re touring after that. I’ll make sure to come here, and we can have a party,” he tried to add in a happier note. But I flared my nose to keep my tears from falling.
“When?”
“That’s the worst part,” he bit his lip. “Now.”
“Get out.”
“What? Sammie, I –”
“Just get out, Joe,” I said sharply, keeping my voice low.
“I’m sorry.”
“Yeah I am too. I’m sorry I even kissed a jerk like you.”
A pained expression crossed his face before he turned around and left me. I pulled the notebook out from under my leg and tore the song out.
