Chapter Three;
“Uncle Nick!” his nieces yelled, running up to him and hugging his legs. He smiled and bent down, kissing both of their foreheads smiling at them. Then he produced a lollipop out of his pocket for each of them, and they took them, smiling gratefully. Tricia was on a health food kick, and had gotten rid of all of the sweets in the house, Joe, and the girls were devastated.
“Joe! We’re leaving!” Nick called through the house.
“Okay man!” Joe called back, “PLEASE bring me back a milkshake! PLEASE!”
“Aright!” he called. “Ready to go lovely little girls.”
“Uncle Nick, we aren’t little.” Ellie, the seven year old said.
“I’m sorry girls. You are absolutely right. You are lovely big girls.” He said smiling at them before scooping them up into his arms. He was still fit for being twenty…he never got out of the habit of working out.
When they got to the ice cream stand, he ordered Ellie a small mint chocolate chip in a dish, and Steenie, a small soft vanilla in a dish. He handed the girls their ice cream, and paid the tab, and while he was waiting for his change, he took a good long look at the brunette waiting on him…she reminded him so much of Aimee, not to tall, not to short…skinny, brown hair…
She sent him a smile, and he was swept back into a memory again.
“Maybe we were in high school.” He whispered as he turned away, his own medium twist in a cone was dripping down his hand.
Nick walked through the doors of Wyckoff High slowly, taking it all in. This was his senior year, and he was going to do it right. He was going to join clubs, play sports, get good grades, and not get absorbed in popularity like he had so many years before.
He was also going to find himself a girlfriend. But that wasn’t on the top of his list of priorities. He just really wanted a girlfriend, his first girlfriend ever. Well, his first decent girlfriend.
As he walked down the hallway, taking in all of the pretty girls that would send him flirtatious smiles and waves. He was surveying them, testing them, what for? He didn’t know, maybe to see if they were worthy of his attention. So far, none of them were.
He ran into someone, and she fell to the floor.
“Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry.” He said as he knelt down to help her with her papers. They were spread all over the floor, and some were getting dirty because people were stepping on them. “I wasn’t paying attention.”
“It’s okay.” She said smiling, looking up at him.
His breath caught when he saw how gorgeous her eyes were, even when her long brunette hair was falling all over the place, and into her eyes.
“I’m Nick.” He said smiling.
“Aimee.” She said, returning the smile.
And that was the moment he found the girl that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.
“So, where are you from? Did you just move here?”
“Well, I’m originally from Canada. I lived in the Maritimes. But I moved here a couple of weeks ago. My dad got a job transfer.” She said, smiling and gathering her books in her arms.
“ Here, let me help you.” He said.
“I can carry my books.”
“It’s only the gentleman thing to do.” He said, taking a few books out of her arms. “Holy cr,ap, how many A.P. classes are you taking?” he said, looking at the cover of the book on the top. AP Calculus. Awesome.
“Five.” She said. “Calculus, English, Chemistry, Spanish, and History.”
“I’m taking AP English and History too. So, there’s two classes we’re in together… what about lunch? When do you have that?”
“Fifth period.”
“Really? So do I!” he said happily. “How about we sit together today?”
“Sounds good.” She said as they reached the door of her Math Class. “Thank you for walking me to class, and for carrying my books.”
“You’re most welcome. See you at lunch Aimee.” He said smiling before turning away and pumping his fist in the air.
He found the girl.
