Today is October 7th 2007. My brothers and I had just got done performing on stage. I loved the audience and the whole touring thing, but sometimes it got a little tiring. There were some days where I barely made it on stage because I felt so week and drained. People didn’t seem to realize the effect diabetes has on a person. Especially when you give your all out on stage every night.
I could pass out right now but we have to meet some of our fans backstage. That was the best part about this industry: being able to interact with the one who stood by you since the beginning. My fans. If it weren’t for them, I would be nothing. Hey, if it weren’t for my brothers, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
I sat down on the couch, waiting for Joe to get out of the shower. We were allowed 45 minutes each night to get refreshed for our fans that had VIP passes to meet us.
The Kill by 30 Seconds to Mars began ringing and I knew that Miley had replied back to my text. My heart began to race. We were actually in an argument. Every since the tour she’s been trying to take things back to the way that they were. Yes, I still loved her and would want that but I wasn’t ready for a relationship again. We had already secretly dated again about three months ago but it didn’t work out. That time we decided that no one would know. My fans would be crushed if they found out that I was dating Miley again, and my fans were also hers. She couldn’t risk losing more. I grabbed my Iphone, reading the message that she sent me.
“Nick, I’m bored. Come see me!” She texted. I smiled to myself. Wow, she got over arguments fast. I knew that it was just an attempt for her to try to con me into being with her again. She had a way of making me melt whenever we were alone. In fact, she was the one that took my virginity the summer of ’06. I kept it from Joe and Kevin but they eventually found out, treating me to a man’s night out. Joe had lost his to Many and I’m not sure who Kevin’s first was.
I sighed and replied back to her message.
“Can’t. Meet and Greet w/ a few fans. Might take an hour. 2morrow.” I told her, knowing that tomorrow held no promises. Yes, we were on tour together but we hardly got to see each other. She has interviews when we had radio stations to go to during the day before each performance. Some days, I wouldn’t see her except for when we sang our song onstage.
“Hey Nick, what’s up?” Joe said, walking into the room fully dressed. I stood up wiping my eyes.
“Just a little tired.” I told him. He hit me in my shoulder.
“Well wake up. It’s time to go.” He said while walking back out of the room. I followed behind him, meeting up with Kevin in the hallway.
We entered the room which held about four screaming girls waiting to see us.
“Oh my gosh!” I heard one say. She had tears in her eyes and didn’t look a day over thirteen. “Nick, I love you!” She screeched. I gave her a hug first.
After about five minutes of them freaking out, they finally settled down and began asking us questions.
“Nick, I heard that you have diabetes. Can you eat candy?” She asked me. I looked over at my brothers for no apparent reason.
“I’m not supposed to eat too much sugar. I have to be careful on the sugar amount that I take in, but sure. I love skittles.” I told her. She smiled as if finding out that we had the same favorite candy.
“Joe, say something funny!” One girl asked. I looked over at Joe as he folded his arms. He put on that little smirk that he wore before he went to tell a joke.
“Um…something funny.” He said, not trying to be funny but the girls burst into cheers of laughter as if he said the most hilarious thing. I shook my hand while burying my face in my hand.
“Joe, do you have a girlfriend?” The other one asked. They all had anticipation in their eyes. Kevin and me took a quick glance at each other wondering what Joe would say. Truth is, Joe was dating this girl named Abby back home but they decided to keep it quiet until the tour was over.
“No.” Joe said. The girls smiled and giggled happily as if he agreed to marry one of them. If they only knew the secrets that we had to keep from them. It wasn’t that we wanted to, we had to. That’s why I’m writing this. I want a clean slate. No more lies.
