“Just look at him!” I said while setting at the lunch table with my best friend. “He thinks he is so cool and so hot but he isn’t!”
“Um…hello, you weren’t saying that a week ago Ava!” My best friend Conner added. I looked back over at the table where the new boy Joe Jonas was surrounded by girls.
“Well last week I didn’t know any better.” I replied. She laughed a bit.
“You also said ‘Oh Joe is so hot!’ this morning too!” She added, killing my dreams for hating him.
“Well…I didn’t know any better then either! Stop interrogating my motives will ya’?” I asked, turning my head away from him.
“Hey guys, what’s up?” Corey said while setting down at our lunch table. I laughed at the amount of food he had slapped onto his plate.
“Nothing, talking about Joe.” Conner said as if it was just so pointless conversation that the world needed to know.
“Well you please keep it down Conner? Hello, the whole school doesn’t need to know!” I told her. She laughed, which faded when she saw the amounts of food that Corey was stuffing in his mouth. “Gross.”
“Whaaaa?” He said as food fell from his mouth back onto his plate. I turned my head in disgust.
“How did you get the money to pay for all of that food…in which you’re probably not going to eat?” I asked.
“Hello!” He said. “I didn’t have a summer job for nothing!”
I shook my head, looking back over a Joe as he was locking eyes with Amber. My enemy.
“Sweet mama! Look!” I said as Corey and Conner both turned their heads to see what I was staring at.
“Yeah?” Conner said, as if she knew already. “Amber has had her eyes on him ever since he laid foot in our school. What’s new?”
I turned my head back around to them, noticing Joe lean in for a kiss. Amber pulled back with a sigh as if she had just kissed an angel. My mouth dropped.
“Holly molly!” I shouted as a few people turned to look in my direction. I looked around to as if I didn’t say it. “She just kissed him.”
Corey wasn’t paying one bit of attention. Instead, he was sticking his face in his food.
“Oh my gosh…she just like…kissed…really kissed him. They can’t be…not they just can’t…”
“Oh yes they can.” Conner said, amused at the way Corey was eating. “And I thought you hated him.”
“Ugh! That was like so two minutes ago!” I said, returning my gaze at Joe. Suddenly he looked over at me and waved. I put on a fake smile and waved back. I then got up and began walking over to us. “Oh no! He’s coming over here! Corey, act like you’re dating me!”
“No!” He said, allowing his mouth to pull away from the huge plate of food. And did I mention how it was all over his shirt?
“Why not?”
“Three reasons. One, I don’t like you. Two…I don’t like you!” He said, returning back to his food.
“And three?” I asked.
“Her!” He said, pointing to Ashley, the girl he’s been crushing on since birth. Is only she knew him more than just the ‘weird guy who stares at me in science class’.
“Hey guys. Ava.” He said, smiling down at me.
“Oh hi Joe!” I said as if I hadn’t seen him going together.
“Guess who I’m going out with?” He asked as if trying to brag in front of my face. “Amber.”
“Oh really? I hadn’t noticed.” I said with a bright smiled.
“Yes you did!” Conner said aloud and I kicked her foot underneath the table. “Oh…I mean, yes you did…not know that…is what…is what I meant.”
Joe smiled, clearly not interested in what she said. “So, who are you dating Ava?”
“Excuse me?” I asked, coking on my water.
“You know…do you have a boyfriend?”
“Oh! Right! Yes….I have…one of those things…that you wanted to know…if I had.” I said, feeling really stupid after saying it.
“Oh really, who?” He asked.
“You just really like to make my like miserable don’t you Joe?” I said in my mind but what I really said was. “His name is…Joe…Kevin…Kevin Joe…nnn…aaas. Kevin Jonas. He doesn’t go here. He’s...out of school. You know, the older guys attract to me!”
“Did you say Kevin Jonas?” He asked. I nodded my head, feeling proud of the name that I had just made up.
“Is he about my height, medium length hair, slim?” Joe asked.
“Sure. Yes. That’s him.” I said, feeling proud of myself. “Yes it is!”
“That’s my brother, and he never mentioned you.” Joe added with a frown.
“…Did I say Jonas? I mean…Jones…” I said, burying my head in my arms. Bad luck never fails.
