Chapter 3
“No one told me I was going to find you
Unexpected what you did to my heart”
“I’ll be seeing you, in all the old familiar places…” the movie "The Notebook" sang as Jessica awoke. Her room looked much more put together than she had left it the night before and she looked over to find Emily dressed in a t-shirt and soffee’s sitting beside her on the bed. “Uhhh!” Jessica groaned and rolled over in her bed. She felt like she had been hit by a bus. “Wow, I slept hard huh Ems?” she yawned.
“HECK YEA!” Emily exclaimed. “And long too! I thought you were NEVER gonna get up.” Jessica laughed and then found enough strength to throw her pillow at her best friend; which then turned into a massive pillow fight between the two girls. Jessica was getting ready to annihilate Emily with her pillow when all of a sudden there was a knock at her door. “COME IN!” the girls yelled at the same time and broke into fits of laughter. Jessica’s mom came in and smiled at the girls. “Well good afternoon sleepy head.”
“Afternoon?” Jessica asked, “WOW! What time is it exactly?”
“Umm two thirty I believe Jess,” Emily said plainly.
“Oh…” Jessica sighed and looked at her mother. “Sorry mom, I fell asleep really late last night and I was tired.”
“Its ok dear I understand,” her mom replied. “We’ve had quite week. Although I came up to tell you that we have been invited next door for dinner so you need to get up and start getting ready. We’re heading over there around five and I know it takes you FOREVER to get ready.” Her mom laughed and rolled her eyes while Jessica just shook her head.
“I DO NOT!” Jessica exclaimed. “Yeah ya do.” Emily laughed. Then Jessica hit Emily with the pillow one last time before running off into the bathroom to shower.
After a good bath and cleaning, Jessica looked at her closet. A majority of her clothes were already on the hangers along with her wonderful collection of jeans. Out of the corner of her eye, Jessica looked at Emily, who was rummaging through her things to figure out what to wear. Finally, after deep deliberation from the both of them, the girls decided what they were wearing. Now, they each did their hair. Emily’s long hair was something that Jessica always enjoyed doing and so with moderate begging Emily cooperated to let Jessica have her way. Of course, it was long, shiny, and sleek when she was done; soon after Jessica began to do her own hair, which eventually ended up in a wavy side ponytail. Jessica was the one who wore make-up usually so she did Emily’s as well as hers and then they were ready to go. They walked down stairs to find Jessica’s mom, dad, younger sister, and brother looking decent. “Well don’t you all look niiiiiiccceeeee,” Jessica’s mom smiled and said in her mock-country accent. Jessica laughed and rolled her eyes playfully at her mother. She and Emily grabbed their purses and slipped into their shoes, then followed their family out the door. It was no longer raining and they were all just going next door, so they decided to walk to the house.
The walk was extremely short, but on the way there, Jessica could not help but think about the events from that early morning/night. She smiled to herself and began to get anxious to see the boy in the window up close. “Will he like me? Would he be a nice person? Will I even like him?” she wondered silently. As soon as they all reached the door, Jessica snapped out of the trance. She watched as her mother knocked on the door three times and all of a sudden, a stampede tried to trample the door down. Or at least that’s what it sounded like to Jessica and Emily. As the girls tried to stifle their giggles, there was an argument going on behind the closed door. “I’LL OPEN IT! NO, I WANT TO OPEN IT! YOU CAN’T OPEN IT I WANT TO! OMG THEIR HERE!” Then there was a little boy who shouted, “WHO’S HERE! HEY JOE ARE THESE THE GIRLS YOU WERE WATCHING YESTURDAY?”
That was it, the girls burst out in laughter and Jessica’s younger brother began to OOOOOoooo along with her sister. Her parents were laughing too….that was a good sign. Finally, a woman’s voice was heard saying, “I will open the door because I am the mother, I make the rules and allllll of you are asking for it. Now go set the table Frankie.”
Finally, after what seemed like eternity, the door was opened by the woman. She smiled as if nothing had happened and said, “Hi there! You must be the new neighbors! I’m Mrs. Jonas and I must ask you all to please excuse my boys. They are…a mess and apparently they are excited to have you all here.” Everyone smiled as if on cue and Jessica’s brother was still snickering. Jessica pinched his arm hard, “Owwww!” he whispered. He glared at Jessica and she met his gazed and mouthed, “shut up.” Mrs. Jonas led the family into the house and led us to the living room.
“Well,” she began, “James, Madison, if you guys want to go meet Frankie he’s out back playing soccer with Kevin.”
“OK!” both of Jessica’s younger siblings squealed. They were defiantly what you would call soccer-holics. As Jessica watched them leave she glanced over at Emily who seemed to have a longing look in her eye. “Go on Emily,” I giggled. “ WHAAT?” she asked, sarcastically astounded. “You can go play soccer,” I laughed, “I’ll be ok.”
“Yeah, go on Emily if you want to go play soccer with them you should!” Jessica’s mom smiled. “Yeah Em, maybe you can give the kids some pointers.” Jessica’s dad said and laughed. Emily looked at everyone and smiled her one million-wat smile and ran outside after the others. Then Mrs. Jonas turned to Jessica. “So my dear,” she grinned, “you can go look around if you want. I made the boys help me clean the house so you can go wherever. You can go upstairs to the extra room if you want, I’m sure Nick and Joe will welcome you…” she smiled and rolled her eyes, “actually I’m sure of it.” Jessica smiled and hesitated for a moment. Then she decided to go on and explore with an approving look from her parents. Then she heard the adults begin to talk as she left. She walked into the front hall and looked at all the pictures along the staircase. As she looked, she could hear someone singing up stairs and playing the guitar. Her heart began to beat a million miles a minute and she braced herself to walk up the stairs. The singing was amazing and she didn’t want it to stop. When she reached the top of the stairs, she took one last deep breath and continued to follow the noise. She reached the room where the sound was coming from a peered in just enough so only she could see, and then… there he was! They boy from the window! Jessica just stared at him for a moment. She took in his dark curly hair and long eyelashes. His freckled cheeks and the way his fingers gracefully strummed his guitar. She felt all the blood rush to her face and began to turn read almost instantly.
After what seemed like years, she finally gathered up enough strength to make herself go in. She quietly walked into the room and she was so quiet, she managed to take a seat on the couch opposite of him without him noticing. She sat right into the corner of the couch and watched him. Suddenly he noticed her presence. He slowly looked up and his deep brown eyes met with her blue/green ones. “OMG! God, is this love at first sight? Its either that or my heart is doing a serious workout routine…” Jessica thought to herself. He gazed at her for a moment and then smiled. “Hi, I’m Nick…”
“Jonas” she finished. “I’m sorry” she jumped, “I just know who you are now that I look at you. I’ve seen you on TV and what not. Not to be rude.” She gave him a nervous smile and he returned with a sweet one. “So,” Jessica began hesitantly, “I umm…heard you singing and I had to come up. It sounds amazing.” “GOSH I KNO I AM RED AS EVER!” Jessica thought.
Nick smiled to himself and looked at her again, “You really think so?” He seemed hesitant, which was the last thing Jessica thought he would be. “Yeah,” she answered softly. “Umm…do you mind singing it for me?” she blushed ten times brighter. “Sure, come sit over here,” he said and patted the spot on the couch next to him. He strummed his guitar and Jessica finally managed to make her way over to the couch. Then he looked at her one last time and began to sing.
As he sang, he kept looking her in the eyes and Jessica was stuck. His eyed were amazing and she couldn’t stop looking. At that moment, it seemed as if there was no one else in the world. When the song ended, Jessica breathed from the first time in what seemed like hours. “Wow,” she breathed, “That was amazing Nick, really, it was.” He was looking at her. It seemed as though he didn’t catch a word she said. He just was staring into her eyes. “You are beautiful,” he whispered. Jessica’s heart was doing back-flips. They seemed to be getting closer when all of a sudden, Joe walked in.
“NICK! What girl are u serenading now?” he laughed. Then he tripped on the corner on the couch. Jessica laughed and fell back on the couch she was sitting on. “HEY NEW GIRL! THAT’S NOT FUNNY!” he laughed and then began to tickle Jessica. “Stooooooopppppp!!!” she squealed. Jessica’s laughter got even louder as Nick joined in. After they finally all got a breather Joe said, “Mom *gasp* said *gasp* that dinner is *gasp* ready.” He looked over at Jessica and said, “I think we are gonna be great friends!” Jessica laughed and nodded. “Yes Joe, you are truly…one of a kind.”
“Thank you, Thank you, no applause!” he replied dramatically. Nick pulled Jessica up off the couch and said, “Ya know, I think my brother is right. We are gonna get really close.” Jessica slowly rose her hand to the one curl in his face and twirled it back into place. She swore he heard his breath catch in his throat, little to her surprise it had; then she looked him in the eyes, smiled, and said, “I think we will too
