Chapter One
*Flashback 2006*
Taking a long deep breath Kevin paused before knocking on Aimee’s front door. He wasn’t really sure how he was going to tell her, or how she was going to take it, but he had to do it today. He had already waited long enough, and it was now or never. When she answered the door, however, all of his thoughts disappeared. She looked gorgeous in her modest brown, wrap dress, the one that matched her eyes and brought out the hazel in them. He could smell the scent of her coconut shampoo in her curly brown hair as he pulled her into a hug.
“Kevin, I’m graduating!” She said taking a step back. “Finally, getting out of that jail cell they call high school.”
Kevin laughed. Aimee had survived high school a little better than he had, so her mother had forced her to continue through school while Kevin got home schooled. Everyday, Aimee would run home from school and hang out at the Jonas house until it was time to go home for dinner. That was how she survived high school and living in this town: knowing that Kevin was always going to be there to hang out with her and be her best friend.
“You look beautiful.” Kevin said, as she spun around to show off for him.
“Thank you.” She smiled, then frowned noticing he was only in his normal street clothes. “Are you going home to change before you go to the ceremony?”
Kevin sighed. “That’s what I came over about.”
“You’re still coming right?” Kevin didn’t answer her. “Right, Kevin?”
“Can I steal you for a little bit?”
Aimee nodded no longer caring about graduation; instead she was worried about what Kevin was going to say to her. She knew for the past month he had been acting strange and they often had a lot of weird silences. She noticed that each and every time they sat in silence there was still a feeling of something unsaid in the air. Like a haunting.
For awhile it seemed like Kevin was just driving in circles with no specific destination, until suddenly he parked the car in front of the park: their park. The one they used to play in everyday in elementary school. He guided her over to the swings and gave her a slight push.
“Kevin, what’s going on?” Aimee asked finally breaking the silence. “You’re starting to scare me.”
“I can’t go to your graduation tonight.” He said honestly.
Tears filling in her eyes. “Do you have to go to the studio or something? Or do you have like a show to do?”
“No.” He answered with tears building in his eyes as well. “Aimee, my family and I are moving.”
“To another town in NJ?” She asked hopefully.
He smiled slightly, “To LA.”
“And it has to be today?” She had stopped swinging to stand up. “That’s kind of short notice to move. What did you just find out yesterday?”
“Actually….I’ve known since May.”
“May!” Aimee cried. “Kevin that was over a month ago! When were you going to tell me?”
“I wanted to tell you sooner. I just couldn’t. I feel horrible about it, but I can’t do anything now. I wish I could, but I can’t. This is the right move for mine and my brother’s career.” He reached out to touch her arm.
“Don’t.” She said pulling away from him. “Please take me home.”
“Aimee….I’m so sorry.”
“I don’t want to talk to you right now. Just please take me home.”
