Chapter 1
Emily walked up the front door of Jonas’s house and knocked.
“It’s open Em”
Emily heard Kevin yell and opened the door walking in to see Kevin and Nick sitting on the sofa playing a video game.
“Hey guys. How did you know it was me?”
She said shutting the door behind her.
“Saw you cross the street from the window. Crap Nick stop crashing into me you little dork.”
Kevin said.
“Eat my dust Kevin.”
Nick said then doing an evil laugh making Emily laugh, she walked over and stood next to the coffee table in front of the sofa and turned around to see that Kevin and Nick were playing a game of Need for Speed. Emily looked around not seeing Joe.
“So where’s Joe?”
She asked.
“Hey that move was totally wrong Kevin.”
Nick yelled.
“Shuck it up fro bro. Joe is upstairs getting ready for his date with Tabitha.”
Kevin said and Emily’s heart dropped for two reasons, one is that she really needs to spend tonight with him just hanging out cause she’s had one of worse days and just wanted to hang with her best friend. And two the fact that he had a date also bothered her.
“Oh okay well um then I’ll just head home then.”
Kevin and Nick could tell by the sound in her voice that she was upset. Nick paused the game and asked,
“Everything okay?”
“Yeah.”
Emily lied inside she was a mess, tears threatening to spill from her eyes she looked down at the floor.
“Hey.”
Kevin said getting up and bringing her into a hug Nick going to stand behind her hugging her from behind.
“Whatever it is everything will be fine. Why don’t you head upstairs and see Joe.”
Kevin said.
“No he’s getting ready to go out I don’t want to ruin his night.”
Emily said trying to contain her emotions.
“If he finds out you were here upset and just left that would ruin his night.”
Nick said Emily nodded pulled away wiping the few tears that escaped her eyes.
“Thanks guys.”
Emily said then walked up the stairs; she walked in Joe’s room to see it empty she could hear the shower running from the bathroom that is adjoined to his room. Knowing he wouldn’t mind she climbed on his bed lying down hugging the pillow that she is lying her head on feeling a sense of calm take her at the familiar scent of Joe’s cologne, soap and shampoo. Joe walked out of his bathroom and into his room a few minutes later in a pair of jeans and a white tank top to see a sleeping Emily in his bed. Not wanting to disturb her he walked back into his bathroom, when he walked back out sometime later Emily was still asleep. Joe walked over and sat down carefully and looked down at her he moved a piece of stray hair from her eyes and gently running his finger down her cheek. Looking at the clock seeing that he is due to pick Tabitha up in twenty minutes he picked the throw blanket he keeps at the bottom of his bed up and covered Emily up then kissed her forehead. He got up from his spot and turned around but Emily’s hand had grabbed Joe’s.
“Joe.”
Emily said in a sleepy voice then rolling over looking up at Joe.
“Hey sleepy head.”
Joe said sitting back down, Emily stretched and sat up.
“I didn’t mean to fall asleep.”
Emily said running a hand threw her hair looking down at her folded hands in her lap. Joe could tell something was wrong.
“What’s wrong Em?”
Joe asked placing his index finger under her chin lifting her chin up. Her blue eyes meant his brown ones and she couldn’t hold back the tears anymore, Joe pulled her into his arms as she broke out in tears. Emily couldn’t help the sobs that racked her body all the stress, the sadness and anger was too much to hold in anymore and the moment she looked in Joe’s eyes her self-control to hold everything in broke. Joe’s heart broke at hearing Emily cry he placed his hand at the back of her head and gently ran his fingers through her hair.
“What happened Emmy?”
“Mr. Phelps told us today that the coffee shop is permanently closed as of tonight. He gave us our month’s pay and said sorry. And if that wasn’t bad enough I was on my way home when Adam called and said that we just weren’t working out for him that I belong with someone else not him. That he couldn’t be with someone whose heart belongs to someone else. I don’t even know what that is suppose to mean, then I get home and I have my Mom screaming at me about the stuff that needs to be done around the house and when I told her about the shop not opening again she told me that I better get a job cause she wasn’t letting me live there if I didn’t have a job and couldn’t pay her rent. It’s always money with her ever since Dad left and the divorce when she only got half of his money. For once I wanted to her hug me and tell me that everything will be okay and that she loves me and is proud of me, but no I got screamed at and orders thrown at me. Do this, fix this, and clean this.”
“I can’t say I agree with your Mom cause I don’t. She’s wearing you out with everything she has to do when you’re not working or at school.”
“Thank god I graduated last month I don’t think I could have went much longer going to school, working and everything she has me do. She says I complain cause I don’t want to do it but that’s not it Joe. I don’t mind doing what she needs me to do but when I’m dead tired or I don’t feel good I would like to take a break or at least get some help but I don’t. She’s changed since Dad left and Grandpa’s death and it’s all because my Grandmother can’t move on her with life and stop making everyone else miserable.”
This was the first time that Joe has heard Emily say what she’s truly feels about her Grandmother’s depression state.
“I bet it feels good to finally say that out loud.”
Joe said pulling her away from his chest and wiping her tears away with his thumb.
“I was afraid to say it cause I don’t want to point fingers. She is the only Grandmother I have ever known and have, I didn’t want to blame her for everyone’s unhappiness but I think it’s time I say it.”
“Your not blaming anyone your just saying how you feel and no one is going to punish you for feeling how you feel.”
“I know I just wish things were different that we all were happy again.”
Joe bought her back into his arms but Emily pulled away.
“I better go Kevin and Nick told me that you have a date. Don’t want to make you late, have fun.”
Joe couldn’t help but see the sadness that was filled in her eyes and voice, he watched her walk out of the room. When he heard his front door shut he looked out his window and saw Emily walk across the street to her own house, Joe sighed picked up his jacket and cars keys leaving his house and getting into his car. While driving to Tabitha’s Joe couldn’t get Emily out of his mind, the look in her eyes, how sad she was, how tired she looked and much she must need someone right now.
