Chapter 4
Around three that afternoon Emily and Darcy pulled up to Emily’s house, they got out of the car with bags filled with things. After the spa treatment they went and did a little shopping okay a lot of shopping on Emily’s part, she blew half of her month’s paycheck on clothes, bra’s, matching panties, lotion, shower gel, bubble bath and perfume. Of course Darcy being the best cousin treated Emily to some things, even though Emily protested.
“Thanks for today Darcy I really needed it.”
Emily said when they reached the front door.
“No prob cous.”
Emily laughed.
“Please don’t do that again.”
Emily said then opened the door and they walked in, the moment they walked in the house Emily knew something was different. For starters the house smelt like pine Pine-Sol, bleach, carpet freshener and hair freshener Emily knew without a doubt what happened.
“Hey Em, Darc your home early.”
Joe said walking into the living room to see Emily and Darcy, when Emily’s eyes meant his he saw a mixture of anger, happiness and relief in her eyes.
“Yeah I wanted to keep her out longer but she wanted to come home.”
Darcy said.
“Hey guys.”
Nick and Kevin said walking down the stairs, Emily didn’t know what to do she couldn’t even look at them afraid they’re see the look in her eyes. She sat her bags down and turned to Darcy.
“Thanks Darcy I had fun today, can go on home I have to take care of something.”
Darcy nodded hugged Emily and whispered in her ear,
“He was just trying to help don’t be too mad.”
Darcy pulled away and left the house.
“Kevin, Nick can you guys leave I need to talk to Joe alone.”
Emily said looking down at the floor Nick and Kevin looked at each other then too Joe who nodded his head. They walked passed Emily and out the door, Emily walked over to the bay window and watched as they walked across the street then she turned around to Joe trying to keep calm but it wasn’t working.
“What did you do?”
She practically yelled at him.
“What? The guys and I cleaned the house for you while you were gone.”
“Why? It’s my job my responsibility to do it not yours nor Kevin or Nick’s, mine.”
Emily yelled walking over to stand in front of Joe.
“My Mom told me to clean the house not you and your brothers me. You had no right to do this.”
Now Joe lost his temper.
“I had to right Emily look at you that’s all you’re about anymore cleaning, working doing whatever your Mother tells you. If she told you to go clean the Empire State building you would do it.”
“She’s my Mother I’m supposed to do whatever she tells and asks me to do.”
“I know but you take it too far Em. Your taking responsibility for things that aren’t your responsibility to do, I’m not saying you shouldn’t help out cause you should but your taking on the responsibility that would be your Fathers.”
“What? That is not what I’m doing.”
“Yes it is, think about it Emily everything your Mom asks you do would be things your Dad would do. When the garage door broke two months ago who fixed it? You, who fixed the coffee machine even though she didn’t know what she was doing? You. This house is too big for your Mom to clean by herself so who does it? You when I recall your Dad did it before he left, not only his responsibilities but your Mothers too. She does nothing but cook dinner you do everything else with no help what so ever, you’re running yourself to exhaustion Em your nineteen but yet you have the responsibilities of a thirty year old.”
“Well I don’t see anyone else doing anything, they just sit on their butts all day and do nothing. Who else Joe is going to do the things that need to be done? They’re not going to do themselves and if they don’t do it then I have too.”
“Your missing my point Em your doing too much, a lot more then what you should. They use you don’t you see that, they know if they don’t do something your do it.”
“What am I suppose to do not do it.”
Emily yelled tears pouring from her eyes.
“Yes!”
Joe yelled making Emily jump back he has never yelled at her before and Joe regretted it the moment he did, he didn’t mean for it to come out as a yell.
“I’m sorry I didn’t mean to yell but listen to me Emily you have to stop doing this. What are they going to do come September when you go to TCNJ huh they’re have to fend on their own then.”
Emily didn’t think about that she was just so happy that she got accepted to The College of New Jersey she didn’t think about that.
“I don’t know.”
Emily whispered.
“Your still going right?”
That was a stupid question Joe knew that getting her masters in English so she can become a romance novel writer is everything to Emily.
“Of course Joe you know getting my masters in English is everything to me, you know I dream of writing for one of the big romance novel publishers.”
“I know look we’re getting off subject here. I’m not saying you can’t take responsibility for things it’s just your taking too much responsibility you can’t fix the world Em.”
Emily broke down in sobs crumbling to her knees with her face in her hands Joe ran over and got down on his knees bringing her into his arms.
“First my Grandfather dies then a year later my Dad just leaves. Up and leaves without saying goodbye snuck out while we were at Darcy’s birthday party and left a note saying he was sorry then two months later separation papers arrive. He just left Joe left me to heave the responsibility of this family on my shoulders.”
Joe knew it was a matter of time before she crumbled and let everything out.
“I know baby I know.”
“He left me to do everything he should be here to do, I so tried of putting on this mask and pretending that everything is okay when it isn’t. I take of everyone but me and I’m tried of it for once I want to be happy and to do what I want to do instead of worrying about everyone else.”
Emily continued to sob into Joe’s chest and he rubbed her back.
“This shouldn’t be your burden to bare and I think it’s time you stopped.”
Joe said and Emily nodded her head and pulled away from Joe, he took off her glasses and wiped her tears away.
“Come on lets go in the bathroom and clean you up.”
Emily nodded and followed Joe into the half bath in between the dinning room and the living room.
