Hey guys..so this is my first one shot, and I really hope you all like it! So check it out!
One Year
It was going to be the perfect day, I could tell. The sky was blue, the air was warm and it was the last weekend of Summer Vacation.
Two hours later I was in serious doubt of myself. Not only had the weather changed when I walked down to my favourite cupcake store, but I’d fallen over…twice. How much worse could this day get?
One five dollar bill and a red velvet cupcake later I was walking out, paying more attention to what I was eating than who was around me. So for the third time that day I fell, red velvet cupcake and all, into a perfect stranger.
I apologised, he said it was no problem. I was amazed at how beautiful he was, how his hair formed perfect curls and how his deep brown eyes sparkled against the falling rain. He offered to buy me another cupcake, I refused, but he insisted.
I finally accepted.
An assortment of cupcakes, a lot of laughter and four hours later we were still in Cupid’s Cupcakes. Talking, laughing…he was so genuine, kind and sweet…like a cupcake. He told me he had to go; I asked if he wanted to meet again tomorrow. He said he wanted too but couldn’t, he was travelling to the next state. I felt my heart tear, it had almost been the perfect day, started out great, had some ups and downs, but it had brought me to him. I couldn’t look at him, I felt the awkwardness.
“So I guess this is goodbye then.” I said filling the silence. He shook his head.
“I’ll meet you again.” He replied peering through his curls.
“When?” I asked maybe there was hope after all. I watched as he thought for a moment.
“In one year from now.” He said.
“One year.” I repeated, like he was joking.
“One year, right here…I promise.” He said laying his hand on mine. I smiled.
“I’ll see you in one year then.” I replied. We stood up, we hugged and we parted ways. My calendar was marked.
How much could you change in a year? The answer was a lot.
Autumn came, the air turned crisp, the leaves changed colour and so did I. School started, I began to forget, too consumed in my own life. Essays, friends, even boyfriends, it all came and went.
Winter, the world turned white, Christmas came and fame grew, not mine…his. I watched as he appeared on my TV, on the front of the magazines I read and the radio I listened too. He was famous, above me…there was no hope, he would never come.
Spring came and I forgot. I stopped clinging to hope, stopped dreaming and waiting for something that wasn’t going to come. My birthday came, I was a year older, a little taller and he was forgotten.
Life moved on, months passed. I had bad days, good days and average days. Summer arrived, my favourite season. It was bright, warm and happy.
Summer vacation began, I stayed with my friends, shopped with my sister and smiled by myself, but something was missing.
My calendar finally turned to August and there it was. Marked in with a purple sharpie and a picture of a cupcake. My stomach knotted, my heart hung low. I had known him for a day, yet it felt like I had known him for my whole life…he was perfect.
After all the months of forgetting, I couldn’t anymore. He was constantly on my mind, in my dreams, in my heart the hope that he might come. The weeks, days and hours passed and I woke up on that inevitable August morning. The sky was dark, thunder crashed and lightning flashed before my eyes. It reflected my mood, I felt nervous, unsure. Should I go or shouldn’t I?
I didn’t even know what time to be there…I stood outside my house and finally took the path that led to the cupcake store.
Already falling twice, my day got progressively worse as I entered the store and looked around…he wasn’t there. I sat down with my red velvet cupcake, my hair wet from the rain, my heart falling as the minutes went by.
I waited, watching the people come and go, watched the sky clear and the periwinkle blue reign.
He wasn’t going to come…he didn’t remember…it was over. The store owner told me they were closing in an hour. I nodded and decided that there wasn’t much else to do. Only a tiny glimpse of hope remained and I clung to it. I breathed deeply, tears began to form in my eyes and I stood up to leave. The store door swung open and he ran in, falling over as he rushed over to me out of breath. I cautiously went over…did he really come? He brushed himself off and stood up. He had changed, and so had I…but his curls remained perfect and his eyes still sparkled. We stood in silence just staring at each other, in disbelief. 12 months, 365 days, 8760 hours, 525 600 minutes and here we were.
“I was scared I’d missed you…that I wouldn’t make it in time.” He said breathing heavily.
“I thought you’d forgotten…I thought you wouldn’t come.” I said quietly looking at the floor. He was more beautiful than ever, more beautiful than I remembered. He lifting my chin up and looked at me deeply in the eyes.
“I promised.” He said, and we smiled.
An assortment of cupcakes, a lot of smiling and an hour later we were still in the cupcake store. In truth he hadn’t really changed, sure he might be a bit taller and muscular, but his personality was the same…it was the personality I’d fallen in love with.
The store owner told us we had to leave. He took my hand and led me out of the store. We stood in the front, the sky was blue, the air was warm, and I was overjoyed…but was this goodbye?
“Is this the end…is this goodbye?” I whispered, scared for the answer. Once again he shook his head, his curls bounced.
“How about we meet tomorrow?” He said. My head shot up, I smiled and nodded, at first too happy to speak
“I waited a year; I think I can wait until tomorrow.” I said with a smile. He laughed and gave me a light kiss on the cheek.
“Tomorrow then…I promise.” He whispered into my ear, and handed me his number. This time I knew he would be here.
In a year a lot can change.
A year later I sat in Cupid’s Cupcakes, not alone, not waiting, but with the perfect guy. Nick came over with a red velvet cupcake and placed it in front of me.
“Happy one year anniversary.” He said smiling. I blushed and smiled. His eyes sparkled as he leant in and kissed me on the lips. He pulled back and looked at me.
“Happy one year anniversary.” I replied smiling back.
It was the perfect day.
Okay..so tell me what you think. Thanks for reading, peace out!
