I heard footsteps approaching me, glancing up I looked into the eyes of my beautiful wife Haley. Her eyes shone brightly as they had for the past 15 years. She sat down beside me; my eyes followed hers as she gazed out at Morgan and Gabriel playing in the front yard.
“You know, I was thinking today, remembering, back when we were younger, how we met and everything. I was having flashbacks…and now we’re watching our kids grow up and smile…it’s amazing.” I said scooting closer to her until our sides were touching.
“You’ve got to be kidding me…I’ve been having flashbacks too. Nick, do you think this means anything?” She questioned.
“Come on Haley, do you seriously think that just because we’re having random flashbacks that we’re undo going some sort of premonition?”
“Well since you put it that way…I guess you’re right.” She leaned against my shoulder and I wrapped my arm around her to shield her from the frightening thoughts I could tell were going through her mind.
“Hey Morgan, Gabriel; what do you guys want for dinner?” I called. They raced over, abruptly coming to a stop before getting to the porch steps.
“Hamburgers!” they spoke in unison.
“Looks like we are having a cook out tonight!” Haley said jumping up from the steps. She ran inside and the Gabriel followed slowly by her heels. I picked up Morgan and carried her inside. We prepared the burgers together, and sang songs and laughed. Every night we cooked together. No matter how hard the meal there was always something for everyone to do.
“Hey Dad,” Gabriel looked up at me from where he was sitting on the counter, “When is Uncle Joe coming over?”
“I don’t know Gabe. I haven’t heard from him in a while.” I left it at that. I rarely talked to my brother now. Kevin, who lived down the road, came over for lunch a few times a week. But neither of us knew where Joe was.
