Chapter 3
[Sunsets of the Past]
We watched the sunset together.
“Remember the last time we did this?” Joe asked.
I smiled. My mind raced back to the last time I was at the Jonas’s cabin. It was an after noon, similar to this. Back when I was thirteen and Joe was sixteen.
..flashback..
My hair was damp and sticking to my back. I grabbed a towel from one of the linen lines that was strung from two oak trees. I just came in from the last Jet Ski ride of the day. I unclipped my life jacket and hung it in place of the towel that I had taken down from the line.
Joe came up and grabbed my hand. He led me out onto the dock and we sat down together.
The sunset was incredible that night, and something that I would never forget.
..end of flashback..
“Yea, I remember,” I whispered.
Joe turned to me, taking my hands in his. “Life has been so crazy recently. It’s just great to see you,”
“I know. But I doubt that you had time to miss me with all of the work you’ve been doing,” I said.
“Please, I always have time for you,” Joe said, pulling me closer to him. I looked up at him and our noses touched. But all of a sudden I noticed that things weren’t the same. Joe was the same. But we were different.
I stood up immediately.
“Uh, I think dinner should be ready,” I said looking out to the bare sky, it seemed so empty now that the sun was finally gone, and avoiding the confused look on Joe’s face.
He got up and smiled at me. “Well let’s go inside then,”
We walked up to the cabin together but right before we walked inside, a little boy came running out and turned to Joe. “Joe will you take me out on the Jet Ski later?” he asked.
“Of course I will Frakie, but first I want you to say hi to Haley,” Joe said with a smile.
“Frankie? Wow you got cuter,” I said kneeling down to Frankie’s eye level.
“Haley!” Frankie screeched, jumping into my arms. “I missed you so much. And I can play the guitar now!”
“Really?” I asked. “You’re going to have to show me later,”
“Okay,” Frankie said in a cute voice. “But we have to eat now cause my mom said that dinner’s ready.”
“Well let’s go inside then,” I said standing up. I looked back at Joe who was smiling widely. “What?” I asked him.
“Nothing, it’s just that you’re really good with him,” Joe said.
“Well he is my favorite Jonas,” I said with a smile and then ran inside.
“Oh, your gonna get it!” Joe said running inside.
We were both laughing like crazy as Joe chased me up the stairs. “You’ll never get me JONAS!” I yelled back as I ran up the steps, but once I was at the top I bumped into someone, Nick.
“Sorry,” I said, giggling.
“I got you!” Joe said coming up from behind and wrapping me in a hug. But then noticed Nick and said, “Hey bro,” still with his arms tight around me.
I noticed the weird look on Nick’s face and said, “Hey Joe, I’ll meet you downstairs,” and gestured for him to go.
“I’ll be waiting patiently,” Joe said in a sarcastic tone and then walked down the stairs.
Nick tried to follow him, but I blocked him from the stairway. “What’s wrong?” I asked him.
“Nothing’s wrong,” Nick said, convincingly. Well it would have convinced anyone else. But not me, not someone who knew him as well as I did.
“Nick…” I said.
“I’m fine.” Nick said.
“Now Nick, I have known you since pre-school. Now are you going to tell me,” I asked.
“There’s nothing to tell. Trust me,” Nick said.
“Fine,” I said.
“Now can I go downstairs?” Nick asked.
“Yea, but your giving me a piggyback ride,” I said matter-of-factly.
Nick smiled and bent down. “Hop on,” he said.
I jumped on his back and he carried me down to the dinner table.
