“Mommy!” Nick cried as he tripped on the
sidewalk. “I can’t find my mommy!” There was no one around. Nick tried to wipe away his tears and look
ahead but he couldn’t stop crying. He
had gone to the salon that day with his mom but he saw a puppy in the window
and stopped by to say hi. When he
looked, his mom was gone.
Nick walked
around, hands still in his face trying to stop the tears. “Over here.”
He heard someone say. He looked
and saw nothing but an empty alleyway.
“Mommy’s over here.” He heard it
again. He started to walk into the alley
but then everything turned dark. He was
scared. He started crying again but the
air was getting thicker and so he couldn’t breathe.
“Mommy.” He gasped, taking deep breaths. “Where are you? It’s dark and I’m scared!” He cried louder.
“Annoying
little kid.” He heard himself say. He gasped again, wondering what was going
on. “You’re pathetic, crying for your
mommy. You don’t need her, you have
me.” He heard himself say again.
“Who are
you?” He whimpered.
“Get out of
him you pathetic Other.” He heard his
dad say. “Nick, calm down. You’re ok, daddy’s here.”
“You’re the
pathetic one. You think you can control
us with your stupid rings? We’ll have
our way with this one. I’ve seen it
already.” The Other laughed.
“You’ve seen
nothing but your own destruction. My
sons aren’t weak. They’ll rise above you,
I know they will.” Nick’s dad replied.
“Daddy!” Nick cried out. “I’m scared.
I can’t see. It’s dark.” Nick felt his dad pick him up.
“Nick, take
this.” His dad said, putting a ring into
Nick’s small hand. “Don’t worry, it’s
your light.” Nick squeezed the ring in
his hand.
“Stupid
Jonas.” The Other disappeared.
Everything
was bright again, cars passed by on the street and people were walking around
like nothing had happened. Nick was
holding his dad’s hand tightly as they walked out of the alley and down the
street, making sure to never let go. He
didn’t want to see it again. He didn’t
want to see himself say things he didn’t mean.
He was scared.
“Nicholas.” He heard his dad say. “The ring I gave you, do you have it?” Nick nodded.
“Listen son. Whatever you do,
don’t ever lose it. It’ll protect
you.” He said. “Wear it on your left ring finger and promise
me you will never take it off until the day you get married.” Nick was confused.
“Why
daddy?” Nick said. He was young but he knew about marriage.
“You have to
promise me first.” His dad said. “Don’t worry Nick. Just promise me.”
“Ok, I
promise.” Nick slipped on his ring and
felt something run throughout his whole body, like someone just dumped a bucket
of cold water on him. After a couple of
seconds though, he felt his body get warm.
It was like sitting in front of a fireplace on a cold day. “What’s happening?” He asked his dad.
“The voice
you heard back there, the one that sounded like you.” His dad said.
“Remember Nick that you and he are two different people. He may sound like you and one day you’ll see
him and he’ll look like you but he isn’t.
He’s your Other. He’s been inside
of you since you were born and now he’s decided to awaken.”
Nick was
confused. “Why me dad?” He looked up at his dad.
“Because
Nick… you have a talent, a talent that the whole world will recognize one
day. It’s something that God gave you
and the Other is trying to take away.
The Other wants the talent for himself and will use it to corrupt
others. You though, you have to use it
to bring others joy and happiness.” His
dad explained. “And the ring I gave you
is a purity ring. It’ll keep the Other
away, inside of you. On the day you get
married, your wife will replace your Other and it will disappear forever.”
This was a
lot of information for Nick, so he stopped walking and stood there. “Only me?”
He asked his dad.
“No.” His dad answered. “Your brothers too, but they haven’t awakened
yet.” Nick stood wide-eyed. “When they do awaken, you’ll be there to help
them. You’re the first to awaken Nick,
and it’s your responsibility.”
Nick was
shocked. He was four years old. What could his dad expect out of him? Why was such a big responsibility placed on his shoulders? A lot of kids his age don’t even know the
alphabet but he had to take responsibility.
It was all up to him.
