Still My Beautiful (Through Eternity) [ff] EPILOGUE up!
Modified By Trinket on 5/26/2008 2:18:26 AM)

If you want to be in the story, I might be able to fit you in, although I think the cast will stay pretty small. If nothing else, I can put you in the audience at a concert and make your favorite JB touch you or something. Oh, and no, I don’t have leukemia. The character is me, but it’s something I hope I never have to go through.

Chapter One

The gold tour bus was rolling down the highway through the pouring rain. Inside the bus, Frankie Jonas slept on the couch and Nick sat next to him, hand on his shoulder, a brotherly smile on his face, with piles of fan mail on his other side. Joe and Kevin sat in the next seats, both of their laps piled with envelopes and small packages. Several large packages lay at their feet, as they were saving the presents for last.
Kevin laughed. “This girl--aw, dude--this girl says she wishes polygamy was legal so she could marry all three of us.”
Joe wiggled his eyebrows. “Yeah, that would be a little weird.”
Kevin looked over at Nick to catch his reaction, but Nick was staring intently at the letter in his hand, without giving a clue that he had even heard him. “Nick?”
“Yeah? Hey, listen to this letter.” He sounded strange, very serious. “Dear Kevin, Joe, and Nick, thanks for your reply to my last letter. I mean, it was a form letter, but I didn’t expect any more than that. The picture is nice and I put it up in my room. I just thought I would write to let you know what you have done for me. See, I’m writing this from my hospital room. I have Acute Myelogenous Leukemia and I’m not doing too well. So, actually, your poster is in my hospital room, above my bed. I listen to your CD--the second one--all the time. It’s a real pickup. It gives me energy, which is really hard for me to get sometimes. I love listening to it. I couldn’t really tell you a favorite song. It depends on my mood, but they are all amazing. You guys are really helping my fight against cancer by giving me the encouragement I need. Thank you so much. Sincerely, Katrina Jacobs.” He looked up at his brothers. “Wow.”
Kevin and Joe nodded, and Kevin said, “Does she say where she lives?”
“Yeah, there’s an address here, in Maryland. And a phone number and email.”
Kevin jumped to his feet, grabbed the letter from Nick, and ran out of the room. Joe and Nick looked at each other, shrugged, and returned to their letters. Several minutes later, Kevin returned. “So… we’re going to see her. This weekend.”
Nick raised his eyebrows in his typical laid-back way, while Joe reacted… well, like Joe. “Dude, what? When did that happen? I mean, sweet! But how on earth did you manage that?”
Kevin shrugged. “Asked Dad and the managers, found out we could squeeze it in, called the girl’s mom and--”
    “Wait, her mom?”
“Yeah, I figured we should make it a surprise, so I called the number she gave us and asked for her mom. So she’s going to put us on the approved visitors list.”
Nick stood up. “Well, that’s awesome. Glad you thought of that. So, what should we do for her…”

Let me know what you think!

OK, since I'm still up, and I finished editing, and I have at least one reader (luv u!) I'm going to post again so you can get a little more of the story. If you read, comment so I know you're there! Otherwise... I might stop!

Chapter 2

Katrina was woken up Saturday morning by her mother. “Hey, hon, let’s get you cleaned up and dressed.”
With a groan, Katrina grimaced as the aches in her joints protested her slight movements. “Mom, I don’t feel good today. Why do I have to get dressed? You said no doctor’s appointments today.”
“Right, but… well, you know this is the day you get the most visitors. It will be good for you to be looking good and feeling good.”
Katrina laughed good-naturedly as she allowed her mother to help her sit up. “Mom, if you haven’t noticed, looking good is difficult and feeling good is just about impossible. I see what you mean, though. How about the blue sweater dress? I’m cold.”
“I’ll get them to turn up the heat.”
“No, Mom, I’m always cold, and I don’t want visitors to be too hot, right?” She coughed repeatedly.
    “Do you have a cold?”
“A little one, but I was coughing to try to get rid of my hoarse voice. It’s so annoying. The medications just zap my vocal chords somehow.”
An hour later, she had bathed, dressed, and was back in bed, feeling considerably weaker than when she had woken. Her mom handed her the remote control for her pain medication IV, the call button for the nurse, her cell phone, and the keyboard to the TV and computer combination in the corner. “I have errands to run, so I’ll be back at one or so to eat lunch with you. Remember the nurses--”
“Are right there if I need anything and you’ll have your cell phone on. Got it. Thanks, Mom. I’ll see you later. Love you.”
Her mom laughed, kissed her forehead, and said, “I love you,” as she walked out the door.
As soon as her mom had passed out of sight, Katrina slumped back on her pillow and moaned. She felt much worse than she had let on to her mother. She hid her pain from her and tried to cover up the bruises that formed so easily on her skin. She hated to see the worry lines and tired wrinkles deepen around her mom’s eyes every time she noticed she was in pain. The “little cold” her mom had noticed felt like full-blown bronchitis, and coughing was agony. With a groan, she adjusted herself on the bed, stretched out her hand, and gently pressed the play button on her bedside CD player. Quietly, so it wouldn’t disturb anyone in the hall, the Jonas Brothers’ “SOS” began. She settled back on the bed with another groan, sighed heavily, and relaxed, smiling slightly and mouthing some of the words of the song. She could have sung every word of this CD by heart, in her sleep. She knew them that well. She knew her family must be sick of them, but they didn’t say anything. How could they? It helped her health.
Opening her eyes with effort, she stared at the picture on the ceiling, picking out each of their faces. “Told you I made dinner plans,” she looked at curly-haired Nick, who sang that line. “It’s like I’m walking on broken glass,” there was Joe, with his *CENSORED* hair and smoky eyes. A guitar riff pointed her to Kevin, one of the only guys alive who could pull off suspenders successfully. It wasn’t so much their looks as their attitude that made them like them as people as much as she adored their music. They were respectful, they were gentlemen, and they were real.

In the hall, Kevin, Nick, and Joe stepped off the elevator. All three were wearing hats, shades, and uncharacteristically normal clothes. Their jeans were looser than usual, their t-shirts and hoodies were unremarkable, and Joe had gone with some normal-looking sunglasses instead of his normal trendsetters. Walking up to the nurses’ station, Kevin asked, “Hey, we’re looking for Katrina Jacobs' room. I think it’s 384.” The nurse typed at the keyboard in front of her, then asked, “Are you on the visitors list? She only takes approved visits.”
“We should be.” Lowering his voice slightly, he said, “Jonas--Kevin, Joe, and Nick.”
“Ah… here you are: the Jonas Brothers.” Kevin winced at the volume of her voice and saw Joe, standing next to him, glance around. The last place they wanted to deal with a bunch of fan girls was in the “quiet zone” of a hospital. “Go down the hall and to the left, it’s room 384.”
Kevin thanked her and led the other guys down the hall, but heard the nurse call, “Kevin?”
He turned slowly, realizing she knew which brother he was. She beckoned him over, and he went. “First of all, keep in mind Katrina is very weak; she’s my patient. Second… um, I don’t want to say it too loudly, but can I get you and your brothers’ autograph for my daughter?”
Kevin smiled. “Sure.” Waving his brothers over, he said, “And thanks for keeping it quiet.” He and the others scribbled on the notepad she presented. Kevin shook her hand, Nick nodded respectfully, and Joe saluted comically. “Thanks.” They headed down the hall to room 384.

Hey! Thanks for saying so! Here comes a new chapter! I guess this is where things really get rolling.

Chapter 3

Katrina heard a gentle knock on her door. With her eyes closed, she said just loud enough to be heard over the CD, “In.” Just the deep breath it took to speak loudly hurt enough to make her grimace. She heard the door open, reached over, and blindly shut off the CD player.
A young guy’s voice said, “Man, but I like that song!”
Surprised, Katrina opened her eyes and saw three guys in jeans, hoodies, shades, and hats standing by the door. She stiffened, cried out with the pain of the sudden movement, then said urgently, “You’re not supposed to be in here unless you’re on the visitors list.”
“We are,” the one in the middle said.
“Well, I don’t know you,” she said, more indignant now than frightened. There was a purpose to that list. She didn’t want certain people there, and certainly not strangers.
The shortest boy said, “Uh, the shades and hats are working better than we thought, guys.” He yanked his hat and glasses off, and the other guys followed suit.
It took Katrina’s eyes a moment to register the change. Then she gasped, regretted it immediately, and groaned. Weakly, she said, “You’re… are you the… Jonas Brothers?”
Nick laughed, and Kevin said, “Last time I checked.”
Joe patted his hair, face and stomach, then said, “Yep, I think so. I just checked, Kevin, so nothing‘s changed.”
“Whew, what a relief,” Kevin answered. Then he looked back at Katrina, who was looking at them with a mixture of amusement, confusion, and amazement. “And you’re Katrina, right? Otherwise, we’re in the wrong room.”
“Yeah, I’m Katrina. Why are you here?”
Kevin started to say something, but Joe interrupted, “Well, we can leave if you want us to…” As he turned and headed for the door, Nick grabbed his shirt, pulled him back to his place, and whacked him on the back of the head.
Kevin glared good-naturedly at Joe, who didn’t notice since he was too busy rubbing his head and glaring at Nick, and answered, “We got your letter. It was awesome, so we thought we should come see you.”
After taking a moment to digest that, she asked, “But how did you know where I was?”
“Your mom,” the three said together, and Joe added, “That sounded like an insult.”
Trying not to laugh, and failing, Katrina said, “She knew? Why didn’t she tell me? I look terrible and my hair’s a mess.”
    “You look beautiful,” Joe said.
    “Liar.”
Walking over to the bed, Joe looked down and touched her forehead. “You look beautiful,” he said in a serious tone.
Kevin seconded that. “You look great. You have really blue eyes and your hair is very pretty.”
Nick added, “Cute dress. And yeah, nice eyes.”
A flood of warmth came to her cheeks, and she broke eye contact with Joe. “Thanks. I just… I guess I feel so horrible I figure I look it, too.”
They all shook their heads, then Nick asked, “Hey, what happened to your leg? You have a humongous bruise on your shin.”
“I was sitting up and dropped my keyboard on it.” She held up the keyboard on her lap.
“That little thing made that big bruise?”
Smiling wryly, Katrina said, “Yeah, leukemia makes you bruise really easily, and your skin is really pale, so they show up big time. I’m covered in them.”
    He winced. “Ouch.”
They spent the next half hour talking about her disease and how it affected her. Nick was interested because of his diabetes, and Katrina was very open to talking about it.
It wasn’t more than an hour before Katrina’s mom came back. When she entered the room, she found the Jonas Brothers sitting on the edges of Katrina’s bed, singing “Hold On” and tapping their thighs to the beat. Katrina, in between all of them, was looking at Kevin and mouthing the words along with them, a faint whisper leaving her lips. The boys all stood up when they saw Mrs. Jacobs and nodded respectfully. Katrina smiled and said softly, “Mom, these are the Jonas Brothers: Kevin, Joe, and Nick. Guys, this is my mom.”
The boys all shook hand with her, then she said, “Has Katrina been behaving herself for you three?”
Nick and Kevin smiled and nodded, but Joe interjected, “Well, she only bounced off the ceiling twice, so is that behaving?” He grimaced. “OK, that was one of my lamer moments.” Kevin knocked him on the back of the head, and he grunted. “Why does that keep happening to me?”
“Because you keep deserving it, numbskull.”
“My skull’s not numb! I felt that, and the one before than, and the one before that, and…”
Joe continued to ramble as Katrina asked from the bed, “Mom? Can we go downstairs for lunch today?”
Immediately her mom’s face creased with worry. “Are you sure you’re strong enough for that? You’ve already had visitors today, and it might be too stressful--”
“No, Mom. Having them visit makes me stronger. I’m feeling good right now.” She immediately broke into a fit of coughing. When she had outlasted the wave of pain enough to open her eyes, she saw all three boys and her mother clustered around her. They all looked terrified, so she smiled. “I’m fine.” I can’t breathe past the junk in my throat and my lungs are half full of gook, but I’m fine. “Let’s go to lunch.”
Giving in, Mrs. Jacobs gently and carefully lifted Katrina to a sitting position and helped her swing her legs out of the bed. The boys watched. Kevin was awed by how difficult the simple process of getting out of bed became. Nick was remembering his few days in the hospital and how weak he had felt, though he never recalled it being this serious. Joe could only stare in disbelief at how unbelievably pale she was--and how long her hair was. Her light brown hair was nearly to her hips, which seemed very strange for a cancer patient. It certainly wasn’t a wig, either.
She slipped her feet into a pair of blue slippers and slid carefully out of the bed, stumbling slightly and catching herself against the bed. Her mom tried to hold her up, but she held out a hand. “I got it, thanks.” Standing up, she grabbed her IV pole and waited until her body got used to standing up again. Finally, she smiled brightly at the guys. “Are you ready for some lunch?”
They nodded enthusiastically, especially Nick. “I’m actually starved.”
Smiling, they started out the door. Mrs, Jacobs started to take Katrina’s arm and help her, but Joe stepped in. “Allow me.” Katrina smiled and thanked him, but he noticed with some amusement and slight disappointment that her gaze remained focused on Kevin’s back just ahead of her.
