Chapter One:
I might look young, but I'm no less defeated
Kate opened her eyes and stared at her clock, not believing the time. It was 1:00pm; another day wasted and no one bothered to wake her. Well, in that case they wouldn’t mind if she was gone.
She grabbed her sketchbook and climbed out her window. Once she reached the floor, she began to walk towards the little café which had become her sanctuary for the past month. She could sit there for hours sketching her memories and sipping from the same cup. Especially days like today, a Monday, when no one else would show up.
She got her regular drink from the daily worker, her only friend in this miserable town, and sat at her regular table near the back. As the intensely loud silence warmed her, she sipped on her cup, but her peacefulness was soon broken by the ringing of a bell, announcing that a new customer had arrived.
Kate looked up curiously trying to see who was the stranger joining her but quickly regretted it when she noticed the same dark haired guy that was at the park yesterday. He wandered in, seeming clueless as to why he was there but quickly headed towards the cashier and made an order.
Kate looked back down at her sketches in hopes of remaining invisible, but she very well new this was of no uses.
“Hey, your Kate right? From the park yesterday…” she heard someone trail off.
She knew it was the same guy from yesterday and simply mumbled ‘hmh’ without even bothering to look up.
“Well um I’m Joe, remember?”
Kate looked at him through her dark bangs, her eyes clearly stating that she was wounded and in no condition to hold up a conversation.
“Gorgeous eyes shine suicide.”
“Listen,” Joe started as he reached out and grabbed Kate’s hand. “I understand you don’t want to talk to me but just give me a chance. Let me take you somewhere so we can get to know each other, please?”
Joe looked at Kate with pleading eyes as she pulled her hand away from his grasp, clearly shocked by his persistence and ignorance.
“Fine you can take me out, but just this once. And don’t assume you’ll find out much about me. You’ll never quite know the truth cause honestly, I don’t even know it.”
Kate stood up, grabbing her sketchbook and dropping her cup in a nearby trash can while heading towards the door. She then stopped at the door ready to push it open and turned around to Joe, who still sat toward the back clearly confused as to what had just happened.
“Well aren’t you coming Joe? I don’t have patience you know.”
Joe quickly stood up and headed towards her, a smile as bright as three moons plastered on his face.
“Oh instincts are misleading; you shouldn’t think what you’re feeling.”
