chapter 1
I sat in the living room, staring at the TV. not even paying attention to what was on. I was alone in the house, although it was fairly late: about eleven at night. Nick, my husband of nearly two years was at Joe’s house. Nick had gone to pick up Kevin and then had run over there after dinner because his father had something important to tell them all.
I met Nick about eight years ago when we were both 17, at a meet and greet held by my radio station. We immediately hit it off and we started to casually date. We soon started to get more serious and we married six years later, when we were 23. Now we’re 25 and happily married and expecting a child. Except Nick doesn’t know that last part. I’m sure that Nick will be happy about the news, although we hadn’t talked about having a baby yet. It came at a good time; perfect, really: the boys have decided to take some time off from singing to focus on family life. Of course, that didn’t stop them from constantly writing and playing together. But they’re not planning on touring or recording for about a year.
I stood up, stretching a little, and turned off the TV. I walked down the hallway and plopped down on a stool at the island in the kitchen. I looked down at my cell phone: No messages. Where was he?
I put my arms down on the cold marble surface and laid my head on them. I’ve known that I’m pregnant for about a week. I went to the doctor to be absolutely positive and I found out that I’m four months along and should expect in June. The only people who know are Morgan, Kevin’s wife, and Bridget, Joe’s wife, my two best friends.
I’ve been trying to think of the perfect way to tell Nick. He knows that something’s up because I’ve been throwing up like crazy for two and a half weeks.
I heard Nick’s car pull into the driveway less than five minutes later. I didn’t even lift my head, too tired and worn out to care. Nick entered through the front door. He quickly closed the door on the bitter January air, and took off his big winter coat. He walked softly into the kitchen and I finally lifted my head.
“Hey, babe,” he nearly whispered, coming up behind me and hugging me. “How are you feeling?” he mumbled against my neck.
“I’ve been better,” I replied sighing.
“You should have gone up to bed,” Nick said, kissing me underneath my ear.
“I was waiting for you. What took so long?” I asked turning in his arms and facing him.
“Well,” Nick drew out, “My dad told us that the record company has set us up to tour this year.
“Wh-what?” Are you kidding me? I was shocked, angry, upset – nearly every negative emotion. “Why now? I thought you were taking a break!” No, no ,noo. Not now! Why do they have to go on tour now of all times?
“Well we were. But AJ just announced that she’s 4 months pregnant, so she and Aly can’t go on tour. Instead they’re gonna replace them, with us. The tour starts at the end of February and will last ‘til the beginning of June. I would rather not go on tour now but Joe, Kevin, and I agreed that we could always take a break next year.”
Nick looked at me and could tell that something was seriously wrong. “Taylor, what’s wrong?” he asked, placing his hand on my cheek, concern in his eyes.
“I-I...”
