“JOE JONAS! YOU GET DOWN HERE RIGHT NOW!” I yelled up the tree to Joe, who was in my backyard tree house. Joe Jonas was a nine year old who bugged me so much. He was three years older than me. He lived down the block and his mom was good friends with mine, which is how we always ended up like this. It seems that Nick would be the one to come over since he was my age, but whatever. “Lindsey! Shut up! I’m bigger then you, I can beat you up!” Joe yelled back down at me. I crossed my arms and stuck my tongue out at him. “Joe, your mom is here.” Momma came out of the sliding glass door and I ran to her. “C’mon Joe, but be careful! Don’t fall!” Momma said as we walked back inside to see Mrs. Jonas standing there. “Hi Lindsey, how are you?” She asked. “I’m fine, how are you Mrs. Jonas?” I said politely. “Kelly, Lindsey sounds so much older then she actually is!” Mrs. Jonas said to my mom, smiling, and then she turned to me, “I’m just fine Lindsey.” I smiled.
Joe walked in through the sliding glass door and stood next to me. “I dare you to kiss me.” I whispered in his ear. He turned to me and went to kiss me. I ran away yelling. “I DIDN’T MEAN IT!” I stopped at the TV in the living room to see my mom laughing with Mrs. Jonas. “Kids…” Momma said. “Alright Joe, let’s go.” Mrs. Jonas said. We waved as they left.
I was sixteen when suddenly
I wasn't that little girl you used to see
But your eyes still shined like pretty lights
And our daddies used to joke about the two of us
They never believed we'd really fall in love
And our mamas smiled and rolled their eyes
And said oh my my my...
Take me back to the creek beds we turned up
Two A.M. riding in your truck and all I need is you next to me
Take me back to the time we had our very first fight
The slamming of doors instead of kissing goodnight
You stayed outside till the morning light
Oh my my my my
I sat in the car, bored out of my mind. We had just left the airport. When I was 14, my family moved to Italy for two years. My mom got tired of it so, today, the day after my 16th birthday, we’re coming back. “Does the Jonas family still live down the block?” I asked. “I don’t know Lindsey, they might be…” I interrupted my dad. “Yeah, I know, they might be on tour.” I said. My dad smiled. “I remember how Paul and I used to joke about you and Joe falling in love.” He said, laughing. “Yeah, I remember Daddy.” I said. We pulled up to our old house, which our grandparents had been staying in, but they left yesterday.
I grabbed my bags and walked up the stairs to my room, setting them on the bed. My room was exactly the same, except all I had to do was put everything back on the walls and my sheets back on the bed. “Momma!” I yelled down the stairs. “What?!” she yelled back. “I’m gonna call Kara and ask if she wants some ice cream? Alright?” I yelled. “Alright.” I grabbed my cell out of my purse to call my cousin Kara.
I walked down the block to Kara’s house and we walked to the ice cream parlor. We walked in. It was our favorite ice cream parlor, “Rita’s Italian Ices” Well, it wasn’t really an ice cream parlor, but they had it. It was actually snow cones, but yeah. Anways, it was the best place in New Jersey to get a snow cone or ice cream, or whatever.
“What do you want Kara?” I asked, “Usual?” Kara nodded and I got up from our table, heading for the counter. I collided with someone. “Sorry. I’m really sorry. I wasn’t paying…” I looked up into his brown eyes. “Joe?” I asked at the same time as he said, “Lindsey?” I nodded as he got up. He grabbed my hand and helped me up. “Um, yeah, I gotta go order now.” I said, as I began to walk away. “Lindsey! Wait!” I turned around to see Joe still standing there. “Would you…like to go out sometime?” he asked. “Yeah, sure, sounds like fun. Friday good for you?” I asked. Joe nodded and walked away.
*FRIDAY*
I walked outside to see Joe standing in front of a black truck. “Wow…Joe, I thought you didn’t have a license!” I exclaimed. “Eh…I got one the other day.” He said. I laughed as I climbed in the car. We went to eat and then we drove around for a little bit until we came to a creek. We got out and just sat by it, staring at the stars and just talking. I looked at my watch. “CRAP!” I yelled. “What is it?” Joe asked, sitting up. “It’s 2:00 AM” I said as we ran to his truck so he could drive me home.
*TWO DAYS LATER*
“You know what Joe? I just don’t want to deal with you anymore! I’m finished!” I ran inside, slamming the door. I went straight to bed and even though I felt very bad for what I had said to him, I was soon asleep. When I woke up the morning after our first fight, I looked out my window to see Joe still out there, sleeping in his truck bed. I smiled and yelled. “JOE!” He jumped and sat up. “I’m sorry about last night….” I said. “No.” Joe said, “I’m the one who should be saying sorry.” I closed my window and ran downstairs, jumping on the truck bed and kissing him.
A few years had gone and come around
We were sitting at our favorite spot in town
And you looked at me, got down on one knee
Take me back to the time when we walked down the aisle
Our whole town came and our mamas cried
You said I do and I did too
Take me home where we met so many years before
We'll rock our babies on that very front porch
After all this time, you and I
I was now twenty and Joe was 23. Kara was 19 and Nick was 20. Kevin was on his honeymoon with some girl named Jessica whom I have never met before. But anyway…back to me.
I was sitting on my front porch reading a magazine. Kara, Nick, and Joe all ran up. Joe stopped in front of the porch and turned around, but Nick and Kara pushed him towards me. I looked up from my magazine and stood up. Joe got down on one knee. I gasped. “Lindsey…will you marry me?” he asked. I nodded and Kara screamed. I hugged Joe after he slipped the ring on my finger. Kara hugged me, almost squeezing me dead. But I didn’t care.
*WEDDING DAY*
I walked down the aisle with my dad, and Momma and Mrs. Jonas were already crying their eyes out. Kevin and Nick stood by Joe, and Kara and Jessica stood by me. We said our ‘I dos’ and everything else you do at weddings until this. “You may now….” Joe began to kiss me. “Uh…continue kissing the bride.” Everyone clapped and Joe and I walked out of the church.
*ABOUT ONE YEAR LATER*
“Um…what about Hayleigh Leanne? You know, after my little sister?” I asked Joe as he took the girl from my arms and I kept the boy. “Hayleigh Leanne Jonas…I like it…no, I love it. Uh…what about Adam Nathaniel for the boy?” Joe asked. I smiled. Adam Nathaniel Jonas….love it. The best thing is…they’re our twins….Hayleigh and Adam Jonas born on August 7th.” I said. Joe smiled and kissed me lightly.
I'll be eighty-seven; you'll be eighty-nine
I'll still look at you like the stars that shine
In the sky, oh my my my...
