Loesss. New chapter just for you.
I was gonna wait till later today but I'll post it now.
"Sooo. I guess we won't be having barbeque?" I asked, watching Joe attempt to clean some of the burnt parts, and trying not to laugh at him.
"Ha. ha. It was an accident. I totally didn't mean to," he said for the third time.
"Riiiigght. Only you, Joe. Only you," I joked. He smiled.
"So, I'm supposing your mom's going to have to cook something else now. I think I'll go see if she needs any help," I said and turned to walk back into the house. Joe started to follow me into the kitchen, "Uh, Joe? I don't think you'll be helping anyone cook for a while," I said, a small smirk on my face.
"Thanks. I am a good cook, thank you very much. That was just a one time thing," he told me.
"Yeah? What about the ti--" but I got cut off by Joe putting his hand over my mouth. I stuck my tongue out and he jerked his hand away.
"Ewwww. You're gross!" he said wiping his hand on his pants.
"Yeah, that's what you get for covering my mouth," I said, sticking my tongue out at him and walking into the kitchen.
"Hey, Denise. Did Paul tell you about Joe's little 'food accident'?" I asked.
"No, I heard someone come in a while ago, but he didn't say anything," she replied, looking up from stirring something.
"Yeah, well, Joe apparently burnt all of the food..."
"I DIDN'T MEAN TO!" Joe yelled from outside. Mrs. Jonas and I laughed.
"...while Paul was inside doing something. So I'm thinking we'll need to cook something else." I continued.
"Oh dear, Joseph. Well, I'd better get started then." Denise said.
"So do you need me to do anything?" I asked.
"Sure, you can get a pot out and start boiling some water. I guess you guys are stuck with spaghetti tonight," Mrs. Jonas said, winking. We all knew Mrs. Jonas made the best spaghetti sauce in the world.
We were almost finished making supper and Mrs. Jonas told me that I could go get the boys to set the table. I walked back out onto the patio. "Hey, Joe! Your mom wants you to come help set the table," I told him.
"Alright. I'm coming!" he said, eager to get away from the mess that he was still working on. Chuckling, I walked back inside and up the stairs, heading towards the first door, Kevin's room. I tapped, my special knock, on the door, and it opened, revealing, of course, Kevin. He smiled, looking down at me. "Hey," he said softly.
"Your mom said to tell you guys to come downstairs and help set the table," I told him, leaning slightly against his door frame.
"Okay, I'll be right down," he said. I turned around and continued down the hall to Nick's room. I could faintly hear him playing the guitar. I peered into his room and saw him sitting, facing the wall, playing his guitar and singing quietly. I tiptoed into his room and sat down noiselessly beside him. He stopped singing, and strummed a few more chords on the guitar before putting it down.
"New song?" I asked him.
"Yea...it's not finished yet," he replied, looking at me.
"I can't wait to hear it when it is done," I said.
"Don't worry. You will. Someday, if I ever finish it..." he said, drifting off. "So what's up? Is the food ready?" he asked, sitting up a little straighter.
"Oh yeah, I almost forgot. The food's almost ready, well, it's probably done by now. Your mom wants you to come help set the table," I said, getting up. He stood too, and followed me out the door. We walked down the stairs and into the kitchen, where Joe and Kevin were already starting to set everything out. Nick and I joined them, placing things on the table. Soon we were finished and Mr. Jonas came down and we all sat down to eat. Nick was beside me, and Joe and Kevin across from us, in our usual spots. Mr. Jonas said the blessing, and we began to eat.
"Yummm. This is really good mom," Joe said, taking a bite of the spaghetti.
"Yeah, much better than your cooking," Kevin replied, smirking at Joe. Everyone laughed, and continued to tease Joe.
"Come on guys, it wasn't my fault!"
"Yeah, then who's is it?"
"No one else was out there, Joe,"
"I can't believe you burned all of it!" and so on.
All throughout dinner Joe and Kevin seemed extra animated and talked endlessly. Joe had everyone laughing at his jokes [and at him], and Kevin told a lot of interesting stories. At one time during the meal, I glanced at Mrs. Jonas and caught her winking at me. "Huh? I wonder what that was for..." I thought.
When we'd finished I started to help Mrs. Jonas pick up the dishes, "Oh, no, Keiko. Let me do them, you've been enough help today. You can go with the boys downstairs," she said. I nodded, thanks, and ran downstairs to the basement, where Nick and Joe were fighting over a spot on the couch and Kevin was finding a DVD to watch. I walked over, pushed both Nick and Joe off the couch, catching them off guard, and plopped down, taking up the entire couch. "No way! That's not fair!" Joe whined, from down on the floor.
"Yeah, I don't think you should get the whole couch to yourself," Nick said, standing up slowly, and looking at Joe, who grinned.
"Oh, no you guys. Don't even think-" I started to say, as they both grabbed me, pulling me off the couch with them. They started to tickle me, leaving me laughing and gasping for air. "Guysss. Tha-thats not ev-en cl-close to fair!" I exclaimed. "Two against one?"
"Well, that's what you get for kicking us off the couch!" Joe said.
"I can't help it that you guys are weak enough that I can push you off." I said, laughing.
"Hey guys, why don't you, I don't know, share the couch?" Kevin suggested.
"But I don't want to sit by these two...boys," I said, wrinkling my nose.
"Hey! We're not that bad!" Joe said, looking shocked at my comment.
"Joe, she was joking," Nick said, rolling his eyes.
"Oh. I knew that. I was just...testing you," Joe replied, trying to cover for himself.
"Yeah, right," we all said, laughing at Joe. He started pouting.
"Oh, I guess it's alright if Joe sits by me," I said, putting my arm around Joe. He started smiling really big again. "And Nick too, I guess," I added. They both jumped back on the couch, with me in the middle.
"Thanks, Keiko. I feel real loved," Kevin sniffed, jokingly.
"Well, I suppose there's room for you too," I said, looking at the already full couch.
"Nah, it's okay. I'm just playing. I'll sit here," he said, sitting down on the floor, leaning against the couch right under Joe and me.
We settled down and started watching the movie.
